It’s never a single piece of kit andthe costs can spiral out of control ifyou’re not careful. And that is a very real problem in themarket right now, mostly as a result ofhow much supermarkets are payingfarmers. The constant price squeezes, which might become even worse as aresult of the national living wage, do put adamper on the market as a whole. Atleast, that is how it seems on the surface.More difficult farming economies will forcepeople to find efficiencies wherever theycan, and there’s nothing more efficientthan agricultural machinery. No numberof men or women can work the same landfaster, nor more accurately. It may be thatthe only way to survive is to do what wecan to squeeze every last bit of efficiencyout of the system – and that’s going torequire some high quality machinery. There is the age-old saying, makesomething good and the customers willcome. That hasn’t always been assignedto agricultural machinery, but it workshere too. The market may look worrying, the outlook may be bleak, as someproclaim it. But manufacturers should bedoing what they can to bring out thebest they have to offer. Machinery soefficient, so time-saving and productive, that farmers cannot help but see thevalue in it. If the offerings on the marketdon’t meet that criteria, if the benefit isjust too little to justify… then one has towonder why they have been brought tomarket in the first place. When it comes to the difficultrelationship between farmers andsupermarkets, we’re afraid there likelyisn’t going to be much change on thehorizon. The introduction of the NationalLiving Wage is going to hit them harderthan most, and everyone in the industryknows exactly where they will try torecoup that from. The only option is forfarmers to do things better, to do thingscheaper and to produce more.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/FOTOKOSTIC118-121_Layout 1 23/05/2016 15:17 Page 4Country FairSunday 7th August 2016www.revesby-country-fair.co.ukGreat day out for all the family!Revesby Park, near Horncastle Save money and book your tickets online now122 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFARM & COUNTRY - SHOWGUIDEPENISTONEAGRICULTURALSHOWSAT10TH SEPTFor full details, pre-show tickets and hospitality packages visitwww.penistoneshow.comFFFoFawwwwwwwwetstsssitommmmmmmJune is here and with it the showseason. At the time our concerns were a little moreimmediate, animals could be used to aid us in hunting or forcattle, where in return the animal got a steady supply offood and relative safety. Those concerns aren’t as necessaryfor us now, yet we still glean incredible benefits from ourpets, be they dog, cat or even fish. There have been many studies over the matter, with manyusing difficult to determine qualifiers like `wellbeing` or`happiness` - and although it may be hard to measure theseemotions, it is true that individuals with pets almostuniversally expressed higher levels of happiness, meaningand self-esteem. This benefit has been noted not just ineveryday life however, but also in the workplace. A 2015study in Japan had individuals testing their concentration andproductivity in work-place scenarios, with certain groupslooking at pictures of cute animals, some at nothing, andothers of other humans. In almost all cases the group whichlooked at pictures of animals were reported to have higherproductivity levels, more concentration and also more focuson the tasks they were given. In essence, the animals allowedthem to work harder and longer – and follow up evidencesuggests this is increased if it’s a picture of your own pet.You can see examples of this all throughout the world.Soldiers who suffer from PTSD or other difficulties comingback into normal society are often given dogs to aid them, particularly in America. The emotional attachment we buildwith animals allows us to confide in them as well, with a UK-based study showing that students who had faced rejectionPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/BARRIMore thanjust a petWe often say that we doeverything for our pets, butscience has shown thatthey do much for us as well – particularly our mental health.More thanjust a pet124-125_Layout 1 23/05/2016 14:43 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY125PETS CORNERwere better able to cope when interacting – or even justtalking – about their pets. Researchers suggest this is a feelingof belonging, something that all people intrinsically want, butaren’t always able to achieve. In almost all cases of a pet, theanimal is happy to give that sensation to their owner, alongwith all the benefits it provides. Cats, dogs, whatever pet youhave – they don’t hold grudges (though at times it may feellike it), nor do they decide that they don’t want to deal withyou on one particular day because of something thathappened at the office. They are always available to provideunconditional love, with or without prompting. And for those over fifty, the benefits can be even morepronounced. Two of the biggest problems faced by the oldergeneration are loneliness and a lack of fitness. In the formercase it may be because their children are living their ownlives, or that they are distanced from family and friends –either way, a pet can help to relieve the sensation. For fitnesshowever, this can often depend on the kind of animal youhave. No one expects you to take your fish for a walk, andthe cat probably won’t be interested in moving off the coucheither. But if you do have a dog, then daily walks can be anincredible way to burn calories – one that often goesunnoticed by you, as it may be nothing more than a longwalk through a nearby park. The effects of the exercise, mixed with the fresh air, social interaction andcompanionship however, cannot be understated. We may not rely on our pets to feed us anymore, thatburden is on us now. But that doesn’t mean pets aren’t stillan important parts of our lives, our families – but also a greatway to improve our health.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/S-FDog WalkingPuppy Classes121 Training Adult ClassesHouse Sittingt: 07977 290920 / 01526 321226e: info@muddypawsdogtraining.uk.com w: www.muddypawsdogtraining.uk.comHome VisitsMuddy Paws Dog Training is based in Lincoln and Sleafordarea, we offer a wide range of services from Dog Trainingand Puppy Services to Dog Walking, specifically attendingto you and your dog’s personal requirements.
