Having left home when he was only 16 yearsold, this is perhaps indicative of an artist’s urge to explore andunderstand. As such, Graham has travelled extensively, working and living across the UK before venturing to theMediterranean. He eventually moved back to the UK, settlingin Lincolnshire where he now lives with his family.Throughout these travels, Graham was immersed in a varietyof cultures, drawing in disparate influences which can all begleaned from his pieces. Drawing and painting fromchildhood, Graham has followed the traditional route of manyartists before him. Although he has had some formal training,he instead prefers to rely on his own sense of the world, andhas developed a particular and recognisable style using oils, acrylics and watercolours. Graham considers “art” in the broadest sense of the termbut like many, he has own personal preferences, which includetownscapes, historic buildings, and material that can tell astory reflecting everyday life of both the past and present.Graham captures the atmosphere and essence of a time orplace by stepping beyond the immediate visual aspects, allowing the observer to see the obvious but interpret thesituation as they will. Always keen to push his own boundaries, Graham constantlystrives to expand and develop his skills, probing and seekingnew and exciting ways to present his subject matter usinglight, texture, and situation to punctuate his work. The result isoften complex, evoking a sense of mystery and naturalmajesty. The emphasis on light provides a depth that issimultaneously tangible and impressionistic, particularly withCapturing the countyWith its striking architecture, wildlife andcoastlines, Lincolnshire is a constant inspiration forits vibrant artistic community; we caught up withGraham Chalmers whose current works capture thecounty in all its varying shades. 30-31_Layout 1 23/05/2016 14:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY31ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE8 Bailgate Lincoln LN1 3AE •01522 589134art@thelittleredgallery.co.uk •www.thelittleredgallery.co.ukRichard ChuckAnita MortimerGraham ChalmersEdward WaiteCarl PaulAnn PollardTHE LITTLE REDGALLERYLincolnshire artist’s atThe Little Red Gallery this June!Don’t forget to say hi to us at Lincolnshire Show on Stand 21 in theMews. Thepaintings of village andtown settings areimmersed in mystery, either in stormy skies andgothic compositions, orwreathed in the honeyedhues of golden hour light. The impression of theartist built up from gazingat his paintings is onewho has lived many lives. And Graham has, in fact, had numerous careers, including lawenforcement, businessconsultancy, andeducation. He is a published author and a composer/song writer, butretired from all of these to pursue his passion for art. Exhibiting regularly and carrying out commissions has resulted in hiswork being in the hands of both private collectors and institutionsalike.30-31_Layout 1 23/05/2016 14:08 Page 232 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYYour garden is an outdoor space whereyou can relax, entertain your family andfriends, or just play with the kids. However it is all too common for thegarden to be forgotten during the winter, leaving it unprepared for the summer. Nomatter what the size of your plot or yourbudget, a garden can become aninvaluable part of your property and be areal investment. If you are looking to create the perfectoutdoor space you need to plan it,otherwise the end results could becompromised. I have been called outnumerous times to rescue a gardenmakeover where they have tried to designand build a garden in a single weekend.Every hour spent designing a garden willsave days of back-breaking work. Also awell-designed garden should look like youEd Fuller from FullersForestry and Landscapingshows you how designing agarden can save time andlabour in the long run. BydesignBydesignhave spent more than you have. You could consider a variety of thingwhen planning your garden, such as:The younger members of the familyWhether it’s a trampoline, goal post orswing ball they need space for their gamesand equipment. If possible, have an areawhich will be for them, and maybe put thetrampoline in an area which doesn’t affectthe lawn. You could also create a vegetablepatch. This doesn’t have to be that big,and could even be made up of pots. Thiscould encourage them to be out in thegarden all year round, and eat theirvegetables.Feature Some gardens are designed around acentral feature. This could be something assimple as a bird bath, a pot with a largeplant or something unique. We recentlycreated a feature from a gabion cage filledwith coloured glass which was aninteresting focal point by day and with alight shining from behind it came into itsown at night. A feature can also be adecking area or patio space. It is somethingthat draws the eye, and it is a good idea totry and position it so you can view itthrough a window. At times we all want a bit of privacy butwith the modern planning constraints and shortages of land, houses are more often than not overlooked from multiple sides. There are three types of screening, namely living, non-living andhybrid screening. Living screening usually consists of placing tallplants in strategic places in your garden. Examples that spring tomind are bamboo – which if the correct clump forming varietiesare selected should be easily managed. Other live options aretrained trees, such as espalier fruit trees or pleached Hornbeam, and Willow. Non-living screens can be more of a feature within agarden and an opportunity to introduce different materials suchas hardwood, brick, canvas or metal. You could also put variousmaterials together to create a striking look, for example werecently created a boundary fence using cedar wood and gabionpillars. A hybrid screen are those that have plants growing over astructure to give rigidity and form. A trellis with an appropriateclimber can be a very effective also. As with a net curtain, agarden screen doesn’t have to have complete cover for it towork. For example, three or four stainless steel wires with apassion flower growing on them can create a really impressivebackdrop. The last hybrid option is a ‘fedge’, a cross between afence and a hedge. Usually this consists of live willow pushedinto the ground to build a fence, this can then be plaited tocreate a decorative structure. Whichever option you chooseremember some of the taller permanent structures may requireplanning permission so check with your local authority first. Once you have planned your garden the fun is creating it, butremember Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will yourgarden. I find that most people underestimate the work that isneeded to create a garden and therefore you may want to see itout as a long term project. Otherwise you could call in theexperts who will be able to design and create your perfectgarden quicker. We work with our clients to create the design, and strive to come up with innovative and inventive designs. Wewant to create a ‘wow’ factor for every job, regardless of its size. It has taken the couple five yearsof hard work to achieve their goal, as thegarden had been pretty much neglectedby its former owner, due to ill health. As we sit outside on the sunny terrace,Jo and Ken recount the story behind therenovation. “it was pretty horrific whenwe first moved in” says Ken, “overgrownhedges, broken slabs and crazy pavingjust about everywhere - it was hard toknow where to begin but we rolled upour sleeves and started clearing out therubble and debris utilising what we couldalong the way, rather than sending it allto landfill.”Jo shows me an image of a Tudor stylewall that’d been built above the fireplace,A truerestorationprojectGreen fingered readers Jo and Kenneth Slone have transformed thecourtyard behind the Cottage into a plant lover’s garden - salvagingmaterials and restoring various features along the way.34-40_Layout 1 23/05/2016 15:36 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY35GARDENSinside the house and explains “that wasso out of character for a period cottageso we decided it had to go straight away. But, the bricks made great pavers for ourgarden path leading from theconservatory – which was then nothingbut a lean to - another job that neededtackling”As I take in the features from theterrace, on a rather rare sunny day inMay, it’s easy to see how it’s going tobloom in a few short weeks of brilliantsunshine.
