The Lincolnshire Show is a greatplatform for local businesses to showcasetheir products and services. We welcomearound 600 exhibitors each year. We loveto hear about and share their successes -whether it’s a great day for sales, newcontacts or an important milestone fortheir business. For the first time last year we usedinformation from our visitor survey tocalculate the financial impact on thearea. Taking into account travel, accommodation, sightseeing andshopping, the event brought in over£4.3 million to our local economy whichis something we’re really proud of. We say it often, but alongside ourcommitment to celebrate our agriculturalroots, we’re continuing to develop theShow every year, bringing newattractions and things to see and do. 2The Show isn’t theonly exciting event onthe horizon, withLincoln Comic Con, Pistonsin the Park and morecoming up. What’s yourinspiration for what eventsare put on, and to whatdegree does local demandplay?Regular visitors to the Showground, orthose who have taken a look at ourwebsite, will know that we regularly hosta variety of high-profile awardsceremonies, antique events, concerts, charity runs and outdoor events – plusmuch more. We have a portfolio ofevents which we hope gives both localpeople and those from further afield theopportunity to attend events whichotherwise would be unlikely to be held inthe area. In recent years, the spotlight onLincoln and the efforts of ourhardworking team have attracted arange of much more diverse and unusualevents and we’ll continue to welcomethese with our usual friendly and flexibleapproach. This involves the hedgie frothing atthe mouth whenever it comes into contactwith a new scent, and then dousing its spines,of which it has around 5,000. It also has a natural immunity to a variety ofplant and snake venoms, with some pluckyhedgehogs braving adder bites for a meal. They make for surprisingly nimble swimmersand adept climbers. They’ve even been knownto turn up in first storey rooms. Although the hedgehog is a likely sightacross most of UK, and maintains an enduringfondness with gardeners, the spiny creaturehas a particular affinity with the people ofLincolnshire. A few years back, an Appleby couple addeda hedgehog A&E wing to their animal rescuecentre, along with its ‘hutch hotels’ to househedgehogs which can’t be released back intothe wild. And they’re far from the only ones. The Hedgehog Care centre in Louth has beenlooking after hedgies since 1980, and caters foranywhere between 50 and 200-plushedgehogs at any one time. Although known collectively as an array, theWith an average life span between 4 and 7 years, hedgehogs are oneof the most commonly associated animals with British wildlife, but whatmight not be as well-known is just how surprising a creature it is. Lincolnshirewildlifehedgehog is typically a solitary creature andonly ever buddies up to mate. Ma and pa ‘hogare unlikely to ever cross paths again, and fromthree months old, the hoglets are old enoughto fend for themselves. Hedgehogs are now classified as a priorityspecies in the UK biodiversity action plan, andprotected by law. As more developments paveover their habitats, gardens are becomingsomething of a safe haven. People are beingencouraged to help where possible, either bycutting hedgie shaped holes in their fences orby putting out plates of cat food. The average garden is prime hedgehogcountry, with piles of logs and black bags aparticular favourite. As they roll up into a ballwhen spooked, hedgehogs are in danger fromcars, machinery and bonfires. When in doubt, have a good root around, it’s tough to tellwhere a hedgie might be hiding. Although all species of hedgehogs hibernate,it does depend on food source andtemperature, but traditionally they will beactive from April to around October andhibernate the rest of year. Make it your summerproject to make your garden a haven forhedgehogs. 134-135_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:50 Page 1© Shutterstock / Phonix_a Pk.saroteLINCOLNSHIRETODAY135134-135_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:50 Page 2136 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYSUDOKUcompetitionClosing date for entries is: 20th JUNE 2017To enter just email the numbers thatappear in the yellow squares to:competitions@blmgroup.co.ukWin a £20 voucher tospend with any of ouradvertisers in this issue.Last month’s solutionJ2A9ND1E9C859634721263971485741285369935462178672198543418753692326549817594817236187326954AriesMar 21 - Apr 20 You will be at odds with someone who isimportant to you but remember, once wordshave been uttered, they cannot be retracted.Be prepared to offer tea and sympathy tosomeone who is in a quandary, because theyneed your support more than you realise.
