The line-up kicks off at £17,790 for theActive 1, with the B&O Play’s price-tagstarting at £19,190, and the Active X at£20,290 and, as our road test in theActive B&O reveals, this is like no otherFiesta. A raft of high tech luxury touches thatwould come as optional extras in manyan executive car along with tougher-suspension, elevated ride height, roofrails and a new body kit put this in a classof its own.Our test model, propelled by Ford’s1.0-litre 125ps engine, was a perfectchoice, matched to the 6 speedtransmission, which despite being amanual came with a trio of drive modes –Eco, Normal and Slippery – the latter ofwhich helps the driver cope with trickyterrain. Then there’s the auto headlamps, lane-keep assist, tyre pressure monitoring, aheated windscreen, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers and a top-quality Bang &Olufsen stereo system, in our B&Oversion - with no less than ten speakersand 360-degree sound.Further technology, like, the 4.2-inchinstrument cluster screen with traffic signrecognition as well as a touchscreen/voice command for the Sat Navand mobile phone pairing are luxuriesthat many a marque would charge asoptional extras.Drive wise, our test car provedunruffled at low speeds, and deliveredenergetic performance wheneverrequired. The cockpit is well crafted andhad little, if any, discernible wind or roadnoise spoiling the experience. Parkingproved a doddle thanks to a neatreversing camera and the car was equallyat home in the city and out onLincolnshire’s open roads. We certainly haven’t seen a Fiestaquite like this before – it is a Ford that isvogueish, well priced and very wellequipped. So, if you need a supermini, but would like a Crossover, theFiesta Active should be top of your list. There’salso a 112 bhp 1.6 petrol version tochoose from – no prizes for guessingwhich I’d choose. Both engines are matched to a CVTautomatic gearbox as standard, whichcertainly provides a smooth drive both intown and out. Reversing in the city ismade easy too thanks to the onboardcamera and an 8 inch display. The XV alsocomes with collision avoidance systemand active headlights which not onlycome on automatically, but also senseoncoming traffic and move to dippedbeam so you don’t blind other drivers.Out on the open roads the XV feelssure footed with minimal body rollmaking cornering an absolute dream andthe slightly elevated driving positiongives the driver a great view of the roadahead. And, if you needed further proofof the car’s off road pedigree it alsocomes with Xmode, which optimises the4 wheel drive system, and hill descentsetting; as standard.Subaru has always attracted its fairshare of those in the agricultural orequine sector and this is certainly true ofthe XV, because it’s a practical go-anywhere vehicle. This also means it hasto be rugged enough to cope withmuddy boots and perhaps the heavierhanded driver. There’s also decent spacein both the front and back as well as awell-proportioned boot.As such, everything seems built to last, but that doesn’t mean its short oncreature comforts. We loved for instancethe orange saddle-stitching on the blackseats and the leather trimmed steeringwheel, the 8.0in touchscreeninfotainment system with Bluetooth, thedigital radio and Apple CarPlay andAndroid Auto smartphone pairing. There’s even touchscreen sat-nav in theSE Premium models. And, at £27,500 for our test model, with all the aforementioned spec - wethink readers will be suitably impressed.Test car courtesy of: Charles WarnerOuter Circle Road, LincolnSubaru XVEffortlessly stylishThis month we get to test the new Subaru XV, anaccomplished Crossover/SUV with permanent 4 wheel drive, which is what really sets it apart from its counterparts.114-115.qxp_Layout 1 21/05/2018 14:51 Page 2GranthamSaturday 26 MayThe Engine Yard, BelvoirCastleAn exciting new luxury destination forfood, drink and retail therapy will open atBelvoir Castle this June.
