Another summer has rolled around, and with it the sun we pessimistically thought would never come. It’s bound to be sprinkled with showers, of course, but that only makes the heart grow fonder and appreciate those warmer days all the more. For us at Lincolnshire Today, June is also a big part of our calendar, and our veritable roadshow of the county’s events is about to begin, including our residency at the Lincolnshire Show – the biggest of the county. All of these country shows are a reflection of how beautiful the county of Lincolnshire is, and also how successful, as you’ll no doubt be able to see numerous local businesses making a living here in Lincolnshire. As such, our June issue reflects that same theme of beauty and bounty, and all things local. Within this issue, you’ll be able to see the latest trends in Summer Fashion, a reader’s home with true distinction, as well as garden advice from our local experts. For those who are getting married, or know someone who is, there is our weddings feature packed full of good advice and better ideas. We wouldn’t be doing the county justice, however, if we didn’t look at one of our largest sectors, the agricultural and farming industry. With a supplement looking at farming, from machinery to equine, as well as recent news, we get to see just how rooted in tradition Lincolnshire is. All that and more, here in our June issue of the Lincolnshire Today Magazine. And of course, if you happen to be at the Lincolnshire Show on the 19th or 20th of June, then be sure to pop down and have a visit to our stand, which faces the main ring. You’ll find a chance to sit down, take a rest, and enjoy some of the food and drink on offer – as well as live music. You can pick up an issue of the Lincolnshire Today magazine there as well, though if you’re reading this it might be a moot point. Come visit us anyway, to chat, drink or enjoy the day. We look forward to seeing you, and good reading, as always. Indeed, in 2018 it was reported that the average cost of a UK wedding was as much as £30,000. The good news though is that 2019 is seeing a drop in prices, thanks to a troubled economy and increased competition in suppliers 72LINCOLNSHIRE WILDLIFE With an average life span between 4 and 7 years, hedgehogs are one of the most commonly associated animals with British wildlife, but what might not be as well-known is just how surprising a creature it is 74THE JOY OF COUNTRY MANORS Nestled within this beautiful backdrop are some of the country’s most exquisite manor houses and gardens, many of which are open to the public to enjoy. Data from Ecclesiastical’s Movement for Good awards has revealed that more than 200 county residents have so far pledged their support to a charity that is ‘close to their heart’. Animal welfare is the issue they care most about, with healthcare and support for community causes completing the top three most popular charity sectors in the county. People aged 36 – 45 are more likely to support a charity than any other age group within the region. The Movement for Good awards from Ecclesiastical Insurance will see a total of £1 million given to charities this summer. Members of the public can nominate a cause for a potential £1,000 award. More than 20 local charities now stand a chance to receive one of these £1,000 grants via nominations from kind-hearted Lincolnshire supporters. Roman treasure unearthed in Lincolnshire The largest haul of Roman coins from the early 4th Century AD ever found in Britain has been unearthed by two metal detectorists in Lincolnshire. The discovery was made near the village of Rauceby after the detectorists painstakingly searched the area for years. The hoard, consisting of more than three thousand copper alloy coins, many of which are historically unique, is now being looked at The British Museum and is regarded as being of significant international importance. Finder Rob Jones, a 59-year-old engineering teacher from Lincoln, and his friend Craig Paul, a 32-year-old planner from Woodhall Spa, were speechless when they made the discovery in July 2017. A full investigation of the site was undertaken by Craig, Dr Adam Daubney, archaeologist at Lincolnshire County Council and Sam Bromage from the University of Sheffield. During the excavation another hoard of 10 coins was found. The coins have now officially been declared treasure. Artists in residence revealed for The Collection Michael Shaw, Belén Cerezo and Ros Lorimer have been selected as the OPEM Artists in Residence for 2019. OPEM is a biannual open-call exhibition run by The Collection Museum in Lincoln showcasing artists working in the East Midlands. Until 23 June 2019, the museum’s New Curtois Gallery will be transformed into public studio space for the artists in residence. “Michael, Belen and Ros were hand-picked from a pool of over 30 applicants, and each has their own unique approach,” said Jenny Gleadell, Exhibitions and Interpretation Officer. “During the exhibition, visitors will be able to talk to the artists about their work as they produce it and may even be able to help create and develop the work itself. “There will also be a programme of workshops and learning events, offering schools and groups a further opportunity to work directly with the artists.” OPEM Artists in Residence 2019 is free to enter. © The Collection latest news © Shutterstock/Lemon Tree Images Lincolnshire among nation’s most kind-hearted counties 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 22/05/2019 10:10 Page 1Armed Forces Day will be celebrated in Cleethorpes again from 28-30 June this year with a free event. The town, which has hosted Armed Forces Days for the last ten years, will once again see a series of military spectacles. The weekend’s celebrations will kick off on Friday 30 June with stalls, including a market, open to the public from midday from Pier Gardens to the end of lower Kingsway and static military displays close to Remembrance Gate. Saturday will once again be the focus of the celebrations with the parade, live music, flying activity and fireworks – all in support of the armed forces community. Sunday will be host to flying activity with the return of the RAF Tornado. Back again from a very successful 2018 will be Flt Lt Jim Peterson the 2019 RAF Typhoon display pilot. Work starts on new Market Rasen leisure space Work has begun at the site of the new £6.3 million Market Rasen Leisure Centre. The new centre which is due to open in late spring 2020 will be home to a range of state-of-the-art facilities for the local community. It will include: a 3G Pitch, multi-use fitness studios, dance studio, a four-court sports hall, a 40-station gym, changing facilities and a meeting room/party hosting area. There has been a lack of leisure provision in the market town for several years. That along with high levels of obesity and hospital admissions for type 2 diabetes, highlight the importance of the investment. The development has been made possible due to the council retendering its existing leisure contract. The new contract began on the 1st June last year and this, together with an investment of £7.8 million, has extended the council’s leisure provision across the district. Lincolnshire named 8th safest area in country Lincolnshire is the 8th safest area in the country according to the latest Office for National Statistics figures released for crime in England and Wales. A national increase in crime of 7% has been announced by the Office for National Statistics. Lincolnshire Police has seen a 20% increase in total recorded crime. These statistics relate to the 12- month period up to December 2018. The force made changes to how it records crime last year following its Crime Data Integrity inspection. This means that the force now records more crime than it did previously. Locally, there has been an increase in violence, stalking and harassment and public order offences. The force has recorded a decrease in thefts, burglaries and vehicle offences. Craig Naylor, Deputy Chief Constable for Lincolnshire Police, said: “Lincolnshire remains a very safe part of the country and by living here you are unlikely to experience crime.” Armed Forces Day celebrations return to Cleethorpes © Shutterstock/Brian A Jackson 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 22/05/2019 10:11 Page 2Majority of Lincs kids get first choice of primary school Lincolnshire has experienced high numbers of families wanting their children to start school in September. There are around 7,500 children wanting a school place this year. Of the offers made to Lincolnshire primary schools, 7,065 (94.17%) children will receive their first choice of school – a small decrease on last year’s 95.02%. A further 292 (3.89%) have been offered their second choice, and 50 (0.67%) more their third choice. A small minority of children – 95 (1.27%) – will be offered a local school that isn’t one of their 3 preferences. Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, Executive Councillor for Children’s Services, said: “I am delighted to see so many children getting their first school of preference and this should be even better by September. It’s always our intention to support as many parents as possible with their preferences.” Artists from all over Lincolnshire have joined forces to provide local creatives with a new home. The Point Creative Hub & Shop is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run initiative led by local poet Gemma Baker and launched in April on St Martins Lane (just off the top of Lincoln High St). The shop, launched on just over £400 in community donations, aims to support local creatives, artists, organisations, and venues by becoming a central point of information for both the creative community and the general public. The Point will be a creative hub and shop that will offer a range of services to local creatives, including a low-cost selling platform, workshop and event space, and will act as a box office for local events. Although The Point is a three month pop-up shop, Gemma says that if there is enough support from the community she will look at developing the idea into a larger space. latest news Artists create not-for-profit creative space in Lincoln © Shutterstock/Monkey Business Images LOCAL COMPUTER MAC EXPERT * MAC & Laptop Repairs * Virus / Spyware Fixed * Windows 7 / 10, Upgrades * Wireless Internet, Security * Data Recovery, Outlook, Email * Hardware Upgrades, Custom PCs * Website Design, Software Support Fixed onsite same day Microsoft Certified Engineers Immediate call out 07758 450396 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 22/05/2019 10:11 Page 3© Shutterstock/cally robin Beach nourishment scheme begins A £7 million beach nourishment scheme started in May to protect thousands of properties and businesses in Lincolnshire. Over the course of the £7 million Lincolnshire Beach Management (LBM) scheme, the Environment Agency’s contractors will pump around 400,000 cubic metres of sand onto Lincolnshire’s beaches. This sand helps to protect people and their properties from coastal flood risk by preventing damage to the sea defences along the coast and reducing the risk of overtopping. The added sand acts as a buffer between the sea and the defences, taking out the brunt of the wave energy, thereby extending the life span of the defences. Restoring sand levels that are naturally lost to the sea over the year helps the EA reduce flood risk to over 20,000 homes and businesses, 24,500 static caravans and 35,000 hectares of land. The EA has carried out these works since 1994. Great garden inspiration Earnshaws Fencing, Landscaping and Garden Design Centre is located in Brigg and is open 7 days a week in the summer months. The Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance has reached a significant milestone after flying its 20,000th mission in May, just hours before celebrating its official 25th birthday. The Ambucopter and crew were called to a medical emergency on Sunday 12th May in Costhorpe near Worksop at 6.30pm. The helicopter covered the 28-mile journey in just 13 minutes; the charity’s on- duty clinical team were then on scene to provide vital pre-hospital care to the patient. The crew arrived back at base shortly after 7.30pm. Roger Linnell, a paramedic at Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance, said: “I am extremely proud to have played a part in this pivotal moment for the Charity. It’s mind-blowing knowing that we have been called to 20,000 missions over the last 25 years.” Throughout its 25th Anniversary year, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance will be working towards providing a 24-hour service 7 days a week.
