This new exclusive development has given a new lease of life to a stunning Grade II listed 18th century building. Originally constructed in 1777, John Carr of York and William Lumby designed the building as Lincoln County Hospital. It was later acquired in the 1870s by Lincoln Theological College for ecumenical training after the hospital moved to Sewell Road. The attached wardens house and octagonal water tower are late nineteenth century and the Chapel added in 1906 was designed by Temple Moore and a late rear addition, now removed, was built in 1962. The south-facing main building consists of a three-storey, eleven-bay façade with projecting pedimented centre and flanking wings. The building has been occupied by Lincoln University followed by Lincoln University Technical College from 1995 under the name ‘Chad Varah House’ and has also been known as ‘Bishops Hostel’ after the Samaritan’s founder who was educated at the Theological College. Christine and her family have been at the home since 2005. Having previously lived within 20 miles of the property, the family moved to the home with the desire to leave an estate for a village location and a property with a “countryside feel.” Dorcette House has been extended over the years to make it the stunning property you see today. Originally built in 1709, the property was extended in 1968 and again 1998. A swimming pool was added in 2000 and the garage complex in 2004. Since the family moved in, they too have undertaken a decent amount of work on the house. Christine said: “When we moved into the property the structure was there but internally it was not finished to our standard. We upgraded the central heating with a new boiler and pressurised hot/code water system. We changed a workshop into an office and finished the annex first floor with a bathroom, bedroom and large gym/playroom.” One approaches the property through electric gates, which lead you to a block paved courtyard. Looking first at the main house itself, one enters into a quarry tiled entrance hall from which one can walk either to the inner hallway or into the large country-style kitchen. Some of the kitchen’s notable features include its polished granite worktops, ceramic china sink unit, breakfast bar and exposed wooden flooring. The kitchen leads into the family room and the lounge/diner, with its classic cosy fireplace that one can image warming up in front of during winter. Both of these rooms contain exposed beams and are Christine’s favourites in the house. From the conservatory one can also reach the indoor swimming pool which rather usefully has a shower room placed with it. Separate to the house there is also a summer house with a Jacuzzi - certainly Dorcette House is a property prime for relaxation. Up on the first floor one will find the family bathroom, and four double bedrooms. The master hosts two built in wardrobes and has an ensuite bathroom with both a bath and double shower with body jets. One of the remaining bedrooms also has an ensuite and the first floor also features a dressing room. Returning back to the courtyard one will find the separate annexe with a highly useful triple garage and office on the ground floor, and a fun-filled games room, bedroom and shower room upstairs. Outside, the property boasts secluded gardens offering a variety of mixed plants, shrubs and trees. Christine notes that the garden is “very private and enclosed, which makes it ideal for children and dogs playing.” The garden also attracts a fair share of wildlife. Christine explained: “We get a lot of wildlife. Many different species of birds which we feed and enjoy watching include several types of Tits, Robins, Woodpeckers and Jays. Ring neck doves and pigeons nest in the conifer hedging too. Several cheeky squirrels help themselves to the bird feed and muntjac deer also visit the garden.” Backing onto fields and countryside, the property provides ultimate tranquillity. After 13 years at Dorcette House, the family is selling the property. When asked why Christine said: “There are only two of us left in the house so it is too big for us. We want to downsize to something with a smaller manageable garden and a smaller house. We have thoroughly enjoyed living at the property and if we could shrink it we would not move!” Dorcette House is on the market for £820,000 with City & County who can be contacted on 01733212305. 14-19.qxp_Layout 1 22/05/2019 11:20 Page 6Next >
