Salvina and David have been living at the quaint cottage, set on Main Street in Baston, for just over five years, attracted initially to the home’s character. The stone fronted thatched home, which started out as two cottages that were merged into one in the late 1970s, hosts a wealth of original features including exposed beams, inglenooks and flagstones. Mainly yellow stone, with red brick detailing and timber lintels over leaded windows, the back of the property has been extended in red brick, an area which houses the kitchen, bathroom and utility rooms. During their time at the Grade II listed property Salvina and David have really made it their own. Though not making any structural changes, the couple have decorated throughout to personalise the property, using pale paint colours to lighten up the inside. Salvina said: “We’ve brightened up the space and mixed a little bit of contemporary with the old.” Peeking through the front door of the cottage from the porch, it is surprising how spacious the home is. “We only live in half of it,” Salvina laughed, “then use the other side for our large family when they come over at Christmas and for special occasions. We This surprisingly spacious and bright chocolate box cottage boasts a plethora of eye-catching original features and a garden one would love to get lost in. 14 Á A quaint chocolate box cottage 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 01/06/2020 08:48 Page 1HOMES 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 01/06/2020 08:48 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES can fit up to about seventeen people in here, probably more!” One is first welcomed by a lounge and dining room area hosting a large inglenook fireplace fitted with a log-burning stove and herringbone brickwork behind. One will also notice original flagstones on the floor and classic beams above, of varying ages. Salvina notes that this room is the house’s centrepiece: “With the lounge and dining room together, it’s a very social space, perfect for entertaining.” While ahead one will see a utility room and boot room, continuing to the right a bedroom and snug wait to be discovered. Salvina said: “The open fireplace in the snug is one of my favourite features of the home, it makes it so cosy. Then with it being a thatched are counted as two instead of four. The adaptable property can be worked with easily to fulfil its owner’s needs. For instance Salvina has changed what was previously a dining room into an extra sitting room. Stepping outside one will see a mature and colourful, rambling garden, with lawn, evergreen shrubs, trees and climbing plants. “It’s just huge,” Salvina said. There are ponds which could be re- established and an old well with a decorative ironwork lid, which is one of just three in the village. Out in the garden there are also two pagodas, a barbecue area and two covered spaces perfect for al fresco dining. Further, there is a carport down the side of the cottage and Yorkstone slabs make up terracing property, it is kept nice and warm in the winter, but cool in the summer.” Off of the snug one will find a hallway leading to the kitchen and a bathroom. The kitchen, which has been repainted and retiled features a Rangemaster cooker with a gas hob, separate grill and two ovens, and a large free-standing fridge freezer. Upstairs there are two bedrooms, which can be reached by their own timber staircases at each end of the property and which both have their own dressing area. When the owners purchased the property, it was set up as a four-bedroom cottage. Now, Salvina uses a room downstairs, which was previously a study, as a bedroom for one of her grandchildren, while the rooms upstairs 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 01/06/2020 08:48 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 15 HOMES directly outside the cottage to the front and back. Venturing down the garden a greenhouse can also be found, as well as what was used as a photography studio building and dark room by previous owners. Past this is a brick built double garage. Moreover when spending time in the garden one will likely be greeted by hedgehogs, a variety of birds, shrews and squirrels. Positioned in Baston, the house also benefits from a “lovely” and “friendly” village where, as Salvina says, “the community all rally together.” The couple note that there is always something going on in the village, from its annual classic car show, to fireworks. 17 Á 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 01/06/2020 08:48 Page 4Own A Piece of Aviation History Ǩ ϐ ͳͲͲΨ ϐͻͳͲǤ 12-17.qxp_Layout 1 01/06/2020 08:48 Page 5LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 17 HOMES Though the couple love the cottage, they are now selling. When asked why Salvina said: “My partner David has two businesses, one in Bakewell and one in Kegworth, and his boys live in that area as well. He commutes every day about an hour and a half each way and when he’s in Bakewell, even longer than that! Logistically it just doesn’t work for us, which is a shame because we would stay here without a question of a doubt. It’s just too long of a commute every day. Its previous owners were here over 35 years and I can easily understand why.” The unique chocolate box cottage is on the market with Fine & Country for £450,000.
