We might not be holidaying abroad this year, but there’s plenty of fabulous places in Lincolnshire to sun yourself. This year we’re seeing a trend for bright and vivid lips which really make a statement. It’s all about contrasting bright ruby shades against luminous sun-kissed skin. Our advice is to use a good lip liner for maximum definition and to keep your lippy from running. Let your lips speak for themselves, so go easy on the mascara. Less is always more and with lips like these you won’t need much else. Colour blocking is still popular when it comes to eyes. Basically, this trend sees a brightly coloured block, shape or smear of colour around the eye. This is an audacious look, one that definitely wouldn’t work with the vivid lip trend. For this you’ll want to go easy on the lips and let the eyes dazzle. Our advice here would be to try pastel shades, such as green or lilac, against a delicate foundation. But really, the choice is up to you. Don’t be afraid to experiment. One look that’s proving popular everywhere from the catwalk to the high-street is pairing a slicked back, low- key hairstyle with fresh-face make-up and curled lashes. It’s a simple look, yes, but one that’s very effective. Another combination we’re excited about is matching cherry-red nails with smudgy smoky eyes. This stylish contrast has a big impact, and is pretty perennial so you can rely on it all year round. Glowing skin is big right now and we’re not just talking about tanning. We mean products that give your face a sexy sheen. This adds an iridescent quality to your look that will leave you sparkling in the sun. If it’s not for you, but you want to experiment with sparkles, try adding a dab of glitter to your eyelids or even in your hair. For minimal effort, you get maximum results. For hair, loose buns are still a favourite, along with the lazy up do. Basically, the trick is getting a style that says you haven’t dried when really you have. Shorter cuts are favouring a more androgynous style that can be really impactful when paired with a face of bright vivid make-up. In terms of accessories, sliders and grips are cropping up more and more often, whether to pin your fringe in place, or to add some extra bling to your look. Lastly, we look at nails, where it’s all about accentuating by adding glitter, texture or diamantes. Our only advice is that it’s best to get them professionally done as this will look better and last longer. But if you feel like experimenting, there’s plenty of advice and inspiration to be found on Instagram. © Shutterstock /UNITSTUDIO 34-35.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2021 07:42 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 35 HAIR & BEAUTY © Shutterstock /sergey causelove 34-35.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2021 07:42 Page 236 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS Core exercises may be generally associated with toned, beach- ready abs, but strengthening your core actually has much wider benefits and is a key aspect of a well-rounded fitness regime. The core is the body’s support system and incorporates the abs, hips, pelvis, back and chest. It plays a major role in everyday activities, whether that be climbing out of bed, reaching the top shelf, bending to tie shoes, or during sports when swinging a golf club or hitting a tennis ball. Core strength is important in stabilising the body and facilitating every motion as movement starts at one’s centre and travels out or moves through it. With a solid centre comes strong and pain free movements. Core muscles connect the upper and lower body, surround and support the spine and pelvis, and help you stay upright, but the core is also home to your inner organs core As some of the most important muscles in your body, strengthening and stabilising core muscles is vital in any solid fitness plan. and central nervous system. Why work on your core? Core exercises can train muscles in the pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work in harmony, leading to improved balance and stability and making sitting, walking, and running easier, preventing falls, and allowing one to move in any direction. As muscles work together, properly supporting the body, and keep the body aligned, one will also be less likely to encounter injuries and will witness reduced fatigue. Core strength will help or hinder you during exercise, for example your core may be weak if you find your hips dipping and back arching during push-ups. Studies indicate a correlation between core strength training and improved athletic performance, which is perhaps unsurprising since the core plays a role in all movement, allowing you Working on your Working on your 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2021 07:44 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 37 HEALTH & FITNESS © Shutterstock /Syda Productions postures involved target core muscle groups and can help reduce discomfort and improve mobility and spine support. Moreover, activities you might not at first think of like swimming and cycling can help strengthen one’s core. Ensure to switch it up between different exercises for the best effect. When thinking about the core there is often too much focus on training the abdominal muscles, neglecting the back and hips, and leaving core muscles unbalanced which can diminish athletic ability and lead to more injuries. Flat abs do not mean a strong core - if one is looking to attain picturesque abs it is just as essential to trim body fat with aerobic exercise and diet. A strong core is vastly more important than a six pack in fitness, preventing pain, injuries, boosting physical performance, and allowing for better controlled movements in day-to-day life. to step, jump, bend, flex, twist, and extend. A stronger core means these movements can be performed better. Pretty much every sport relies on core strength for performance, for instance core exercises can help prevent a runners’ legs tiring rapidly or help rowers pull faster and harder. Another benefit of strengthening your core is in combatting back pain, which often occurs when one’s core/abdominals are weak, inadequately supporting the spine. As the core is at the centre of the body, supporting the neck and back particularly, a weak core will leave other back structures to work harder, causing muscle strain and pain. A weak core can also leave you at risk for poor posture and contributes to slouching. A strong core meanwhile helps in keeping the posture upright and erect at the desk or out and about, with core strengthening exercises working the torso muscles from top to bottom helping one stand tall with limbs aligned. The great thing about core exercises is that they do not require special equipment or a gym membership, though a yoga mat is useful. In fact any exercise using your abdominal and back muscles in a coordinated way can be classed as a core exercise. Specific exercises to stabilise and strengthen your core however include planks (on your elbows and side), sit-ups and leg raises, which are ideal for beginners, or why not do a bridge by laying on your back with knees bent, then tightening your abdominal muscles and raising your hips off the floor until aligned with your knees and shoulders and holding in this position - avoid tilting the hips. Activities like yoga and Pilates meanwhile are good core- strengtheners and engagers as the 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 26/05/2021 07:44 Page 238 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FOOD & DINING bounty A selection of recipes making the most of fresh fruits and veggies that look as great as they taste.
