June is a very special month for the whole country, what with Queen Elizabeth II becoming the first British monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee. It goes without saying that we’ve all been spoiled by Queen Elizabeth II, who has espoused consummate professionalism and poise throughout an incredibly varied time in power. Queen Elizabeth II has reigned through such incredible events as the Troubles in Ireland, the decolonisation of Africa, joining and then leaving the EU. Even in her younger years during WWII the (at the time) heiress did not leave the isles despite the frequent aerial bombings, and even trained as a driver and mechanic! Given the spotty and often exploitative history of rulers in many other countries throughout history, including our own, it’s easy to see why Queen Elizabeth II has become a beloved and well-respected figure not just here, but across the globe. The shoes she will eventually leave behind will be difficult indeed to fill, and many believe we may never again (certainly not in our lifetimes) see so dedicated and respected an official. Known not only for her excellent rule and commitment to representing the country, but also her intellect, wit and dry humour, this month’s issue celebrates Queen Elizabeth II, and our county of Lincolnshire. With two extra bank holidays this month, we hope you’ll join us on the jubilee weekend at any one of many events across the county. Good reading, as always. Beaches at Skegness, Mablethorpe and Sutton on Sea, which are managed by East Lindsey District Council, have once again achieved the prestigious Blue Flag status. Central Beach Skegness, Central Beach Mablethorpe and Central Beach Sutton on Sea have all retained the Award, which looks at the water quality, facilities, beach safety, environmental education and management of the beaches. The Blue Flag Award is managed in England by Keep Britain Tidy and internationally, by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is widely considered the gold standard for beaches. The main purpose of the Blue Flag is to raise awareness on the standards of environmental and safety management and environmental education related to beaches and marinas. Councillor Martin Foster, portfolio holder for operational services, said: “We are proud to say to all our residents and visitors that our beaches have retained their Blue Flag Awards for 2022. The status provides confidence to local people, as well as new and returning visitors, that our beaches are well maintained and meet water quality standards.” Bid successful on Skegness Town Hall East Lindsey District Council has announced that Skegness Town Hall has had a successful bid, which has now been accepted. The popular seven-hectare reserve, which is managed by North Lincolnshire Council, already provides a haven for wildlife, including insects, butterflies and birds. Now, thanks to a £9,750 grant from the FCC Communities Foundation, both the habitats and access to the site will be improved. Cllr David Rose, cabinet member for environment, said: “I’d like to share my thanks to the FCC for awarding the Axholme Line Nature Reserve this generous grant. This will make a huge difference, not just to the reserve but to the wellbeing of the wider Isle of Axholme community as well. “Across North Lincolnshire we are prioritising our ambition to become carbon neutral by 2030. A key part of our Green Futures plan is to enhance biodiversity by protecting and developing wildlife habitats. Continuing to enhance our local nature reserves, which are already home to many species, is vital. I look forward to works beginning this autumn, once the bird nesting season is over.” An extension to St Christopher’s School is progressing well, promising improved facilities and additional places for pupils. In order to increase the school’s capacity, Lincolnshire County Council is currently constructing a new 130-place school on the site of the former Priory Witham Academy Junior School. The new building will include 15 classrooms alongside therapy spaces such as sensory and soft play. In addition, there will be a large hall, a hydrotherapy pool and physiotherapy and medical rooms. This new site will be for St Christopher’s primary-aged pupils. Once completed, St Christopher’s current site will become home to its secondary-aged pupils, with the current buildings being extensively redeveloped and remodelled as part of the improvement project. The revamp and build will see the school’s total capacity increase from 200 to 333. The new school is expected to be completed towards the end of 2023. New Lincoln special school taking shape Skill centre opening completed at Lincoln College Greater Lincolnshire Enterprise Partnership chair Pat Doody has officially opened the new Digital and Professional Skills Centre at Lincoln College. The centre is home to the latest technology to ensure graduating students are familiar with cutting-edge industry techniques. Andy Wright, principal trading standards officer at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “These are professional suppliers using convenience shops as a front to cover what is their main business: the sale of illegal cigarettes.
