< PreviousNew poet laureate for Stamford revealed To mark the 10th anniversary year of Stamford having its very own poet laureate, this year the town has appointed not just one – but two – popular poets. Following a selection process, deputy town mayor Cllr David Taylor, outgoing laureate Rob Ellks, and SKDC arts programme officer Karen Burrows decided on local poet Scott Coe as the new Stamford laureate. They also appointed Daniel Paice as the inaugural Stamford youth laureate in a move to encourage a younger audience to pick up a pen and write. The two laureates will work alongside each other, Scott writing poems for the traditional civic role with Daniel working in an outreach role with schools and youth groups. Throughout the year the new poet laureate will work with Stamford Arts Centre and in the community to support the poetry scene and help to continue to make poetry part of the life of the town. latest news © stock.adobe.com/John Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate An Excellent rated (ISI) school welcoming children aged 3 months to 19 years. Kyle was out running near Gibraltar Point in Skegness – a particularly remote area at least a mile from a road. John Clark and his wife had been out walking for a couple of miles and had seen just two people that morning. After feeling faint and sitting down at lunchtime, John suffered a cardiac arrest. By pure chance, Kyle was in just the right place, at the right time. Mr Clark was not breathing and had no pulse so Kyle began CPR, continuing for around 30 minutes and getting a pulse back on three separate occasions before the arrival of paramedics. Mr Clark was helicoptered to hospital where, after surgery, he made a full recovery. John and his wife, Josephine, recently visited Skegness fire station to meet the crew and pass on their personal thanks to Kyle. latest news School marks its platinum opening with a Jubilee tree A school which opened its doors the year HRH the Queen ascended to the throne has been presented with a special jubilee celebration tree. Councillor Mrs Diana Rodgers, who represents the Dunholme and Welton ward, has gifted a tree to William Farr Church of England Comprehensive School in Welton to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Red House Farm is a late Georgian, non-listed, red brick Arcadia placed between Spalding and Boston, around two miles east of the village of Donington. Historically significant, Dame Sarah Swift, who co-founded the Royal College of Nursing in 1916, lived in the property from 1861, when she would have been 7 years old. The abode’s intriguing past is further enhanced by a crest in the brickwork on the front of the house, linked to Charles Darwin, with emblems from his family crest, his three shells and Griffin, as well as a Calvary Cross. The Latin motto underneath the crest is the same as the Darwin family motto, Cave et Aude, meaning Beware and Dare. Other lovely details on the exterior include intricate decorative brickwork along the eaves, a brick hood mould above one of the windows and tall, elaborate chimneys. Having been in the same family for the last 35 years, Peter and Hazel took over the reins ten years ago. During that time, a large amount of work has been completed, with the conversion of the barns and stabling particularly impressive, creating an indoor swimming pool complex that adjoins open plan living and a games room/gym, a double garage, workshop, and storerooms. When rebuilding the outbuildings, the family endeavoured to utilise as much of the original materials as possible. We hand- cleaned every single brick and then reused them all. In the pool room the only aspect that we actually left standing were the arches, so they were never taken down. We kept those as they were and filled in the cracks where needed.” Stepping into the core of the property, the ground floor presents an array of wonderful spaces for entertaining. “You can open the house up right the way through from the conservatory, kitchen, dining room, across to the sitting room, and enjoy parties as big or as small as you like,” Hazel noted. “We have had a lot of fun with a lot of people here.” The conservatory is Hazel’s favourite room in the home: “You get to see the sun all day, see it rising and setting, and in the summer, you can throw the doors open, giving access to the garden - it’s perfect.” An addition to the south facing front, the bespoke, traditional, orangery- style, timber conservatory provides a light and airy living area with a connection to the outside, underfloor heating, and a central roof lantern that automatically opens and closes, keeping the conservatory at a steady temperature as well as closing if it starts to rain. The conservatory extends off the kitchen and holds double doors into the dining room. The first of these rooms, the monochrome kitchen, is fitted with a solid wood bespoke kitchen topped with granite work surfaces, the units recently painted in Dove Grey. Meanwhile a big electric Aga - in the last 10 years replacing an oil version - has five ovens whilst an eye-level, double oven and an induction hob is integrated into the units for cooking in the summer or as a 19 Á 14-21.qxp_Layout 1 20/05/2022 13:58 Page 418 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY AY2022 T MA£2.95 coastline Visiting t th irecipes Mouthw heritage Lincolns ti hi gardens Homesa r d WWWLINCWWW.LINC COLNSHIRETOCOLNSHIRETO ODAYNETODAY.NET BLM www.blmgroup.co.uk Lincolnshire Today’s gift subscription for only £27.55 with free delivery Call 01472 310301 or visit www.lincolnshiretoday.net/341 1st 3 £1 Looking for a great gift idea?
