Having served as a gate guardian outside the RAF Honington base in Suffolk, the iconic aircraft, the Buccaneer S.2, took A1 drivers by surprise. Escorted by police to the former RAF Binbrook airfield — travelling at 25mph on a heavy goods vehicle — it is set to be restored and added to the site’s aviation museum. The Buccaneer S.2 was a low-level, strike and reconnaissance aircraft, with a maximum speed at sea level of 690 mph. Eavesdropping dogs Humans and dogs have lived together for over 14,000 years, but do our canine companions actually understand us? Well, Lincoln researchers think so. A new study conducted at the Universities of Lincoln and Sussex, and Jean Monnet University, has revealed that dogs like to eavesdrop on our conversations. The research explains that dogs actually ‘listen in’ when we are speaking, even if the speech is not directed at them, sifting through information relevant to them when humans are talking. Dr Holly Root-Gutteridge, postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Lincoln, shared: “Dogs understand that we say their name to get their attention, and this is almost always paired with a happy ‘baby talk’ speech register because dogs prefer it. We wanted to see if dogs were only responding to this happy voice or if they could recognise their name, even when it was buried in a sentence and delivered in a flat voice. We found that dogs could absolutely find their name when presented in a monotone way and buried in stream of irrelevant speech – a prerequisite for comprehending language – and shows how good they are at listening to us.” watercooler 78 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net Have we missed anything? Send your rib-ticklers to t.egginton@blmgroup.co.uk By the Seal or no seal Marine life volunteers were left scratching their heads last month after rushing to Cleethorpes Beach to investigate a call about a seal in distress. A member of the public contacted Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue with concerns over a crying seal’s safety, but upon arrival the volunteers struggled to find the animal — until they realised the caller had raised concern for a large seal-shaped rock! The organisation shared on social media: “We must agree that from a distance, it looked suspiciously seal-like… but… It was a rock. A very healthy, very stationary, very unbothered… rock.” Naturally naming the rock ‘Dwayne’, Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue added that “the tide has since returned Dwayne to the estuary– presumably to continue their important work of sitting very still.” © stock.adobe.com/Maria Vitkovska © stock.adobe.com/Ian Dyball © stock.adobe.com/MatthewByyourside then, nowand inthefuture Learn about our free Will Writing Service at ambucopter.org.uk/will Ourfirsthelicopter,1994 LNAACT REG CHARITY 1017501Next >
