Thecity’s retail offer has suffered heavily over recent years, and so it’s encouraging newsthat councillors have agreed in principle to the new development. I for one won’t besorry to see the back of that terrible bus station! It will no doubt improve visitors’impressions on getting off the train if we have a nice new retail area opposite thestation instead!C DevlinNorth HykehamReaders’LETTERSPickof theMonthLINCOLNSHIRETODAY11Party timeDear Sir,Congratulations to all those hardysouls who turned out for all the Jubileeparties across the county recently. Having been inthe firewood business for over elevenyears, sustainability had always been avery strong issue that we wanted toincorporate.”Louise and Geoff wanted the designof the house to complement itssurroundings, utilising handmadebricks and a lime-based mortar to bein keeping with the existing farmbuildings on the site. The house is built out of ICF(insulated concrete forms), a veryhighly insulated buildingconstruction, with a u-value of 0.14,each block is made out of a very high-grade polystyrene which lockstogether, then a mix of concrete ispoured into the central cavity to createan extremely strong, quiet and airtighthouse. These building techniques are the key tobuilding a modern economical house and means a sustainablehome without the need for a wet central heating system, ground or air source heat pump at all.The house is of open-plan design and positioned so that itreceives maximum solar gain during the day in winter, but hasshade protection supported by oak beams (these were salvagedfrom firewood) to prevent overheating in summer. The ventilation system is the key to the whole success of thesustainable build, as it removes stale damp air and keeps thehouse feeling fresh and warm. The heat recovery ventilation system also takes the stale airout and replaces it with fresh filtered warm air.Heat can also be “harvested” from the log-burner’s insulatedflue cavity, which helps the ventilation systems heat recovery,if needed on colder days. The feature log burner with “closed air combustion” is lit oncolder days and uses around 2.5 tonnes of sustainably sourcedwood at a retail cost of £337.00 a year. All the water, and associated appliances in the house use softwater from the rainwater harvest system and there are no bathsinstalled in the property, only showers. Both the showers haveair injected shower heads that use 70% less water, and all thetoilet have dual flush to help conserve water. “We save lots on cleaning chemicals, and help theenvironment, due to the soft water not creating any lime scaleon toilets, taps and showers. The quantity of soaps andshampoos are used less because the soft water creates greatersuds, this all helps care for the bio activity in the septic tank.”18 Self interlocking high grade polystyrene blocksICF blocks create a ' lego house' impression as constructedTraditional hand brickwork finishing features21 years of design excellence...21 years of design excellence...
