Consequently, the F-TYPEisn’t designed to be like anyone else’ssports car. It’s a Jaguar sports car –ultra-precise, powerful, sensual and, most of all, it feels alive. The engineering philosophy behindthe F-TYPE is focused on Jaguar’sindustry-leading expertise in the use ofaluminium. Featuring the mostsophisticated iteration of the Britishmotor manufacturer’s celebrated rigidand lightweight aluminium architectureto date, the model has a perfectlybalanced weight distribution thatallows its rear-wheel-drive dynamics tobe explored to the full. Three variants will be available atlaunch this month – the F-TYPE, F-TYPES and F-TYPE V8 S. Each isdistinguished by the power output ofits supercharged petrol engine with allfeaturing stop/start technology toincrease efficiency.A fresh 3.0-litre V6, developed fromJaguar’s highly praised 5.0-litre V8lump, is available in either 340PS or380PS, powering the F-TYPE and F-TYPE S respectively. Both display thesame free-revving, eager nature thatencourages you to probe the fullextent of the engines’ abilities. The V6 models are joined by a newlydeveloped member of Jaguar’s V8engine family. Producing 495PS in theF-TYPE V8 S model, it dashes to 60mphin 4.2 seconds and on to anelectronically limited top speed of186mph, while releasing 259g/km ofCO2. The 380PS V6 F-TYPE S covers the 0-60mph gallop in 4.8 seconds and has amax speed of 171mph, with CO2emissions of 213g/km. The 340PS V6F-TYPE accelerates to 60mph in 5.1seconds and on to a top figure of161mph, whilst discharging 209g/kmof CO2.An active exhaust system, which isstandard on the S and V8 S models, adds another facet of driver-engagement. Valves in the exhaustsystem open under load from 3000rpmwhich allows the tailpipe note to buildto a rousing climax at the redline. The F-TYPE has a set of eight closely-spaced, athletic ratios in its Quickshifttransmission, giving greater control atthe wheel. The V6-powered S modelalso includes a Dynamic Launchfeature, which optimises accelerationfrom rest. The carmaker’s eye to the future isportrayed in the assertive designlanguage that knowingly challengespreconceptions. Jaguars have alwaysbeen associated with sinuous, muscularsimplicity and the F-TYPE is noexception, its shape being defined bytwo ‘heartlines’ forming the front andrear wings.Taking inspiration from the C-X16concept unveiled in 2011, the front ofthe F-TYPE features a newinterpretation of the audacious angularJaguar grille from which flows the burlyclamshell bonnet with its signature‘power bulge’. The all importantheartline begins its journey in the bladedissecting the shark-like gills on eitherside of the grille before leading the eyeto the top of the front wing, into thedoor and towards the rear of the carwhere it gracefully disappears. Its path is taken up at this point bythe second heartline which mushroomsout to form the strapping rear haunchbefore sweeping spectacularly aroundthe sensual low tail, made possible bythe inclusion of an active rear spoilerwhich deploys at speed to reduce liftby up to 120kg. Full LED rear lampscreate a new Jaguar sports carsignature by reinterpreting classic cuesfrom the past and, by wrappingaround to the trailing edge of the rearwheel arch, emphasise the potentposture of the motor and its rear-wheeldrive sporting promise. The focus on driver involvement andperformance in the F-TYPE ishighlighted by the ‘one plus one’layout of the asymmetric cabin. This isevidenced by the grab handle whichraces down the centre console on thepassenger side, delineating it from thedriver’s position. Further differentiationis provided by the use of separate trimmaterials either side of the cabin, witha more technical finish on the driver’sside.Taking cues from cockpits of fighteraeroplanes, the controls areergonomically grouped by function.Further aeronautical inspiration can befound in the joystick-shaped SportShiftselector controlling the eight-speedtransmission. The air vents on top ofthe dashboard will only deploy whenyou instruct them to, or by complexcontrol algorithms, staying tuckeddiscreetly out of sight in othercircumstances. The F-TYPE is, with doubt, a car thatdelivers precisely the key sportingattributes that Jaguar intended. It’savailable from £58,500 for the entrylevel, rising to £67,500 for the F-TYPES, on to a price-tag of £79,950 for theF-TYPE V8 S.090-091:Layout 1 17/6/13 10:17 Page 292 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCOUNTY MOTORSLots of Lincolnshire motorists cherishcars from bygone motoring eras, whenthe roads were less crowded, and carshad more character. The result is that you’ll sometimes seesomething a little different on the roads,a car that will cause comment amongstyour passengers, and perhaps evenprompt someone to say, “My dad hadone of those!” This month, we meet Del and LindaJohn and their Gilbern Genie. How old is it?46 years old, it was built in 1967.Has it always looked this good?It has been totally rebuilt and modifiedto take part in historic rallying. There areextra instruments fitted for performanceand navigation, a roll cage and Recaroseats for comfort, fitted with harnessesfor safety. How rare it is?Very. This is chassis number 10 of only197 Gilbern Genies made between 1967and 1969. The company was based inLlantwit Fardre, near Pontypridd in Wales. We used to have another rallyGenie, so Linda and I could bothdrive, but tended to travel together, sowe let one go to a dealer in Rome.Does it travel far? We use it most weekends during thesummer, and later on this year we’reattending a Club rally in North Wales. We have also driven the Isle of Man TTcourse with it. Previously, it had done a1,200 mile Icelandic classic rally. What’s the engine? It’s a Ford Zodiac V6, almost threelitres. The gearbox is a four-speed, withoverdrive on third and fourth. The frontaxle’s an MGB item, and the back one isfrom the MGC. The body is glassfibrebonded onto a tubular steel chassis. Is this your only classic? No. I’m a bit of a car nut with anunderstanding and enthusiastic wife. Wealso own a Marcos LM400 which is aroad going version of a Marcos Le Mansracer fitted with a 4-litre Range Roverengine, and a Kingfisher Sprint which isan evolution of a Mini Marcos - therewere only 34 Kingfishers built. Ours hasa 1,380cc turbo engine. What would it cost me to get one?If you’d bought the car new in the1960s it was very expensive at £1,775,but the company also sold them in kitform for people to build at home. Therearen’t many for sale these days, butthere’s one available in Oxfordshire, infull rally spec, for just under £12,000which is car number 16 – our old carimported back from Rome!My other car’s a…Gilbern GenieDo you have a very special classiccar, something really out of theordinary? Indeed itwas feared that the event would have toend, with no event last year, butRockingham stepped into the breach, with a new course designed by topinternational course designer PhilipHerbert. The new location seemed to go downwell with all how took part. Ros says, “Itwas great to ride across a course whichprovided really bold old fashioned fencesas well as more modern technicalcombinations. My horses both copedreally well and enjoyed boldly gallopingacross the fantastic going here.”Ros is 27 years old and runs her teamof competition horses from the familyfarm near Louth. Ros won both CIC2*sections at the event, riding her mareZenshera in one section and Emill in theother. Both horses are nine years old andare these events are vital steps towardstheir outing at Blenheim Palace’sshowcase class in September for eightand nine year old horses.Ros said, “What a fantastic place tocompete at. The Castle backdropgave it a really specialInternational feel. Idefinitely hope to comeback again next year todefend my titles.” Indeedthe hard work of PhilipHerbert and his son Guywas hugely appreciated andJames Saunders-Watson, of thefamily who owns the estate, washugely enthusiastic about the event, which will return to Rockingham in Mayof next year. There may be no Olympics this yearbut 2013 is likely to be a huge year foreventing, climaxing with the BurghleyHorse Trials here in Lincolnshire inSeptember. It’s helped by the return of anumber of events that had to take a yearout in 2012, not just the Brigstock Trialsbut also the Badminton Horse Trialswhich, like the Great Yorkshire Show, fellfoul of some traditionally awful Britishsummer weather. Like Burghley,Badminton forms a third of the GrandSlam, eventing’s greatest prize, which isawarded to those who win at both theseevents and the Kentucky Three Day atthe USA.This year’s Trials didn’t just feature thetop names in the sport like William Fox-The main EVENTSIn the run up to the Burghley Horse Trials, local ridingtalent is excellingPitt and Zara Phillips, but also some of thestars of the future in the GrassrootsChampionships. This competition seesamateur riders compete on the samehallowed turf that the professionals use onthe eve of the event. This year’s winnerwas primary school teacher Katie Hardistywith her own seven year old skewbaldhorse named Croft Farm Percy, who wonwith a dressage score of 29.5 in a class of46 riders. Katie says, “This horse has neverwon anything until today so it’s fantasticthat he pulled out all the stops for theChampionships! I think he will be thehorse of a lifetime for me. I hope to get toInternational level competition with himby the end of the year. I think winning thistitle will be the confidence boost that willget us on our way towards that.”There may beno Olympics this year but2013 is likely to be a huge yearfor eventing, climaxing with theBurghley Horse Trials here inLincolnshire inSeptember094-095:Layout 1 17/6/13 10:13 Page 1BRANSBY LINCOLNLN1 2PHt: 01427 788464www.bransbyhorses.co.uk Registered Charity Number 1075601come and visit us...Meet more than 300 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules – from tiny Shetlands toenormous Shires and everything inbetween! Remember you can also order prints directlyfrom the site too!Love LincolnshireEvery month, we talk to a familiar face from thecounty to find out what makes Lincolnshire specialfor them. This month we talk to artist and gardenerPeter Wood to find out what makes the county, which features in his art, special for him. What do you love about Lincolnshire? There’s plenty of space, superb light and sunsets, big skies. It’s not overcrowded, has some of thecheapest property prices in the UK, the living costs arenot too high and it’s possible to live as cheaply asanywhere! There’s also lots of nature reserves, hugeopen beaches and hardly anyone on them whichmakes for great wildlife, good wood pigeon shooting, fishing. There’s also an awareness of the arts, with exhibitions and trails beingorganised constantly, and a certain magazine called Lincolnshire Today of course! If you were to give advice to those who have never visited the countybefore, what would it be?Avoid winter and the cold easterlies! Apart from some very pretty ice and snowscenes, I would rather be away in warmer climes. The summer can be beautiful, with a delightful and peaceful coast, vast fenland plains and pretty villagesthroughout and into the wolds. Each and every main town and city has its ownmerits, whether Boston, Lincoln or Grimsby, some have special markets, thelivestock ones are great to take the kids to. Smaller towns such as Louth have acountry feel to them and delightful shops, pubs and good beer! What’s the highlights of the year for you in the county? The pigeon and game shooting in winter is great and so is the fishing in thesummer. My gardens in the summer and the landscape looks striking also. Theseascapes, painting flowers in summer and taking photographs and film to use inwinter in the studio are also fantastic. Going winter beach angling andphotography in the snow are also extremely enjoyable.
