With a myriadof golf clubs and courses, from the north down to thesouth, the Lincolnshire region is mad about golf. And,with the summer months here, it’s also a time wheremany will be bringing out their clubs and preparing forday’s out. But why is it that so many people – bothyoung and old – are so keen on the sport? If you’re looking to lose weight or tone your figure,it’s been found that a round of golf is more efficientthan a fast and furious gym session. On average an 18-hole game of gold could burn around 900 calories. Andconsidering the sport is slower paced, it also means youdon’t feel as exhausted at the end of it, as you might atthe gym. Obviously the game involves a large amountof walking, and this coupled with the pulling of yourbags, swinging and changes in posture have a strongtoning effect on your muscles. It’s no accident thatprofessional golfers all tend to have athletic figures.Because the sport itself is also enjoyable, it is a mucheasier form of fitness to stick to then regular visits to thegym, and will not leave you feeling quite so burnedout. The health benefits go beyond simple fitnesshowever, for it’s also been found that playing a roundof golf a week could reduce your risk of heart disease.Walking around a golf course can be as good asrunning for cardiovascular health, with reductions inblood pressure and cholesterol. Lisa Purcell, from theBritish Heart Foundation, actually recommended golf asa method to combat heart disease in their “HeartMatters” campaign, saying; “Walking is one of the bestways to get your dose of healthy activity: 150 activeminutes a week will help keep your heart healthy andyour muscles strong. Golf can also help improvesuppleness and strength, and relax your mind.” Relaxation ties into another health benefit to thesport, that being the stress-reduction it offers. Any formof high intensity exercise can reduce stress, with manypeople using the gym to power through any negativefeelings in an effort to exhaust the body. But golf’seffects last longer for a number of reasons.Psychological studies into stress and how to treat ithave shown that there are a number of factors that canhelp reduce stress levels, including mild-moderateexercise, the presence of green nature, sunlight, freshair and social activity. When it comes to these factors, around of golf really does tick all the boxes. The addedpeace and quiet of the course from the otherwisestressful hustle and bustle of normal life can also helppeople achieve a calmer piece of mind. Golf is also good for our social needs and activity, which ties in with the mental health benefits of stressreduction. Golf is a social sport in a way that manyother sports do not manage. Consider football if youwill, that you could attend with some friends and playtogether – but the fast paced and competitive natureof the game would prevent you from holding aconversation during it. Not so golf, which will oftenleave people to chat between themselves while theyare travelling to the next hole or between shots. This social interaction is also nurtured by the sport,as those who get on well with one another oftenarrange to play together in the future. Agreeing a settime and date that they will meet again at the club foranother round. Beyond that, all clubs have an area forgolfers to have some drink and food after a game –giving new friends a chance to talk about their game,or commiserate if it wasn’t their best. The handicapsystem in place in the sport also enables people ofdifferent skill levels to compete against one another ifthey wish to. Though many people just enjoy doingtheir best and having fun, rather than tallying up whohas won at the end. You might recognise a number of the points aboveas being examples of what medical professionals willgive you in regards to helping a person live a longerlife. And it’s true that the health benefits of golf canprolong your lifespan. In fact a study into the lifespanof golfers looked at the health and longevity of300,000 golfers and found that the death rate forgolfers is an astounding 40% lower than for otherpeople of the same sex, age and socioeconomic level. The benefits of walking can also help ward offconditions such as dementia, and also slow down theprogression of Alzheimer’s disease. This was supportedby Professor Clive Ballard of the Alzheimer’s Society, who pointed out that “By keeping active you makesure your brain has a good, strong blood supply, whichis essential to help it function better now, and in thefuture. Whether it is going for a jog or walking the golfcourse, keeping physically active will keep your heartand brain healthy.” Because golf is a sport and hobby that can beaccessed at any age, and continued on right up to theend of a person’s life, it is the perfect activity to reap allof the above benefits no matter the individual’scircumstances. Beyond all of this though, there is onefinal thing to remember. The biggest reason peopleenjoy golf is because it’s fun!© Shutterstock / Maatman 54-55_Layout 1 20/06/2017 11:08 Page 2SHALLOT, CHERRYTOMATO ANDMASCARPONE PIZZA56 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGPerfect for a supper withfriends, easy and quick tomake; the shallots can beprepared ahead of timeand everything simplythrown together at thelast minute.Serves: 2Preparation time: 10 minutesCooking time: 10-15 minutesYou’ll need:12 shallots, peeled and halved1 tbsp olive oil1 ready-made pizza base or useflatbreads100g mascarpone cheese12 cherry tomatoes, halved25g Godminster cheddar cheese, gratedRocket leaves, to serveWhat to do:Pre heat oven 200c/ 180c fan/ Gas 6.Place the shallots in a frying pan, addthe olive oil and cook gently untilsoftened and beginning to brown, approx 10-15 mins, cool a little.Spread the pizza base with themascarpone cheese, top with theshallots, cherry tomatoes and thegrated cheese.Cook for 10-15 minutes until goldenand melting, serve straight from theoven sprinkled with rocket.Recipe courtesy ofwww.ukshallot.comAl frescolivingSummer is the season of BBQ and salad, light lunches and cocktails on ice. Thevast panoramic windows that overlookthe adjacent golf course provide abeautiful backdrop to lunch, dine or justindulge in a quick tipple. The ample barwas excuse enough to visit, though thefood is the reason to stay.Having already settled on fish for main(we were in Grimsby, after all), I opted forthe mini toad in the hole from thespecials menu to start. While the Yorkshirepudding and sausage combo is an oldcomfort favourite, it has been reimagedfor the Instagram generation. Thepresentation was exquisite on slate with amicro salad accompaniment and herbgarnish. The ‘Yorkies’ themselves werecloser to profiteroles in their lightness andtexture, and the sausages were heady andherby. The star of the show, though, wasthe accompanying horseradish. Light andcreamy doesn’t begin to describe it. My partner, countering her meaty mainwith a fish starter, selected the mackerelfillet from the specials. The hot fish wascountered with a cold and crunchy saladof radish and grated carrot. The pepperyradish danced off the salty, smoky notesof the mackerel. All of which waselegantly enrobed with a pleasant saucegribiche. Sticking with the specials, I followed thetoad in the hole with the lemon sole. Thedelicate flatfish had been wrapped aroundtender spears of asparagus and daubed inan unctuous hollandaise sauce. It was awonderfully light and summery main, onewhich demonstrated the chef’s dab hand. The lemon flavours were big and showedconfidence in seasoning, bringing out thebest of the fish and asparagus. My partner was swayed by the rump oflamb, dressed up with roast fennel, peapuree, anchovies and crunchy potatocroquettes. There’s a good reason lamband anchovies pair so well, with thebrackish flavours of the fish bringing outthe meat’s gamey sweetness. The fennelhad become honeyed during its roastingand brought all of the flavours together. The crispy lamb skin was an utter delight, and was a treat saved until last. Our desserts were both a sumptuousand fitting flourish to the meal, with mypartner selecting the bakewell tart andcustard, while I went for the greediest ofall with the warm Belgian waffle. Alone itmight sound innocuous, but add to thatthe butterscotch sauce and salted caramelice cream and you’ll see it was an easychoice. The Humber Royal remains one ofGrimsby’s best spots for a drink and ameal. It might be easy to drive past, butyou’d be missing out on one of thetown’s hotspots. To book a table andsample its delights for yourself, visitwww.thehumberroyalhotel.co.uk or call01472 240024. TheHumberRoyal,GrimsbyA heritage steeped in fishing, trade and export has left Grimsby with its ownfood culture. One which pulls in influences from afar and celebrates the bestthe county has to offer. Much like the historic town itself, beneath anotherwise unassuming façade, the Humber Royal is one of Grimsby’s besteateries – truly a diamond in the rough.59_Layout 1 20/06/2017 10:33 Page 1Next >
