While the old adage of time moving quickly when you’re having fun might ring a little flat, what with Brexit, the Tory leadership battle and everything else dominating the news, it’s important to keep in mind that there’s still plenty of fun to be had in Lincolnshire, as this issue encapsulates. In times like this, the key to avoiding stress is to not worry about things you cannot directly change yourself. Don’t hide away from them, but also don’t try to wade into the situation, as that only makes it worse. Instead, why not take the time off to do something a little more entertaining, be it going shopping, visiting a theatre or just going out for a fancy meal at one of Lincolnshire’s best restaurants. It’s bound to be more fun than sitting at home watching the news. In our July issue this month it’s all on board for summer, with the best fashion and a special feature on new and exciting hobbies – including one we undertook ourselves in gliding. We also take a look at Grimsby and Cleethorpes, which at this point will have just finished their Armed Forces show. Along with the latest garden advice from our specialist and a look at a reader’s home, an artist and more, our July issue is packed full of things to do. Good reading, as always… Michael Fisher Editor and the Lincolnshire Today team The magazine that cares WE CARE because we want to leave our world a better place than we found it Lincolnshire Today believes that being socially and environmentally responsible is the key to maintaining a flourishing business that our customers will be pleased to use and our staff will be proud to be part of. Community - From a very local point of view, we strive to be a ‘good neighbour’. We also extend that into the much broader local community, through financial support of local causes and charities. The walk, running between Spilsby and Hundleby, was created in 1986 to celebrate the bicentenary of artic explorer, and former Spilsby resident, Sir John Franklin’s birth. Over the years the route had become overgrown and difficult to follow but thanks to Spilsby and Hundleby Walkers are Welcome, it has been re-established, cleared and remarked. The route was relaunched as part of the annual Lincolnshire Wolds Walking Festival. “It’s good to see the Franklin Way be brought back in to use, the Walkers are Welcome group have done great work in re-establishing it,” said Lead Tourism Officer, Karen Edwards. “Sir John Franklin is one of the District’s most important Ancestors and this route and leaflet build on the work we did last year with Spilsby and Hundleby Walkers are Welcome to produce the ‘On the Trail of Sir John Franklin’ leaflet.” County comes together to promote career opportunities News that graduates are more than ever returning to their home region after graduation has prompted Lincolnshire’s education, council and business leaders to pool their efforts to improve employment outcomes for students who stay local. Greater Lincolnshire local authorities are working together with employers and the University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University to promote graduate retention and greater visibility of opportunities. Together they have successfully bid for an Industry Challenge Project – worth £500,000 over three years and due to launch in the autumn. It’s designed to ‘match-make’ students with regional employers by demonstrating the rich array of career opportunities available for high-skilled graduates in key local industries. Meanwhile, West Lindsey District Council has produced a ‘Higher Skills Brochure’ with the University of Lincoln’s Careers and Employability Team to boost visibility of jobs. Now the county council’s children’s social care services have been awarded the highest possible rating for supporting children, young people and their families. “We are officially rated one of the best children’s services in the country which is a tremendous accolade and just reward for the commitment of staff, partners and all those children and families who work with us to make our support so effective,” said Councillor Mrs Patricia Bradwell, Executive Councillor for Children’s Services. “We support some of the most vulnerable young people in the county as a key priority and this proves we are doing the right things at the right time to ensure our services for children are the best they can be.” Yvette Stanley, Ofsted’s National Director for Social Care, added: “This is a magnificent achievement, which reflects the hard work and tenacity of all those working in children’s services at Lincolnshire County Council.” © Shutterstock/Photographee.eu latest news © Shutterstock/Nejron Photo Lincs’ children’s services hailed ‘Outstanding’ 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 19/06/2019 12:52 Page 1People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has been recording stag beetle sightings for two decades. Now, the wildlife charity is calling for anyone who lives in a known stag beetle area to carry out a more in-depth survey as part of an ongoing study – the European Stag Beetle Monitoring Network. All volunteers need to do is walk 500 meters on six occasions between June and July on warm, summer evenings, recording any stag beetles they see. The European Stag Beetle Monitoring Network aims to assess population levels across Europe, monitoring the stag beetle’s full range. To combat habitat loss, PTES is also keen for those with gardens to help by making simple, stag beetle friendly changes, making gardens across the UK stag beetle havens. Actions could include building a log pile and leaving dead wood. If you see a stag beetle, please record your sighting (with a photo, if possible) via www.ptes.org. Epworth & District Agricultural Show promises new line-up Returning on the August Bank Holiday Monday, the Epworth & District Agricultural Show promises a fabulous line-up as well as transporting visitors back to medieval times with Knights of the Crusade. Adding a twist to the renowned agricultural show, a spectacular Knights of the Crusade will feature in the Main Arena this year with two shows. Characters will be dressed in period costumes and armour and will stage heroic fighting and dazzling pageantry from a world of mythical England. The audience are not just expected to spectate though, as children are invited to become squires, village maidens, and a ‘Lady of the Day’ will be chosen to become Maid Marion. In the second show, children will be asked to try to pull Excalibur from the legendary Stone. New for 2019 will also be a toddler play area inside the Beer Tent, with a fabulous soft play section and small inflatables. Lincolnshire Today sponsors charity golf event Lincolnshire Today has joined with sponsors to support a charity golf event organised by Streets Chartered Accountants. Taking place on 5th July 2019 at the Lincoln Golf Club, the annual event will once again be raising funds for Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance; East Anglian Air Ambulance and Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The event receives fantastic support and last year saw 29 teams taking part and more than 30 local businesses sponsoring the day. There were individual and team prizes as well as competitions such as ‘Longest Drive’, ‘Nearest the Pin’, ‘Beat the Pro’ and ‘Hole in One’. The event proved very successful raising more than £5,800 for the air ambulances thanks to the businesses and organisations that turned out to support the event. This includes a multi-million-pound grant to advance research into a ‘Holy Grail’ medical imaging system for cancer patients, the establishment of Lincolnshire’s first medical school in partnership with the University of Nottingham, and a top ten ranking in the National Student Survey. The University was rated TEF Gold – the highest standard possible – in a national independent assessment of teaching quality in higher education. Professor Mary Stuart, Vice Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, said: “The University of Lincoln goes from strength to strength. I am extremely proud of this achievement and grateful to all staff and students for contributing to our ongoing successes. We are grateful to the community of Lincolnshire for providing such a supportive home for our exceptional students and we hope they share in our sense of pride at these successes.” An ambitious programme to help regenerate Cleethorpes town centre has received a £1 million boost through the Government’s Local Growth Fund as part of its commitment to the Northern Powerhouse. The funding, which was secured by the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership through the Humber’s Growth Deals with Government, will complement the Cleethorpes regeneration programme which is supported by the Coastal Communities Fund – secured by CoastNEL – and Heritage Lottery Fund. The project focuses on a strategic site at the heart of Cleethorpes and involves highway/road safety improvements, extension and enhancement of the public space along the full length of Sea Road, improvements to Pier Gardens including a new contemporary multi-use pavilion housing enhanced public facilities and a small events space. Lord Haskins, Chair of the Humber LEP, said: “Cleethorpes has the potential to attract many more tourists and be a key part of the visitor economy in the Humber.” latest news © Shutterstock/Connor Wyatt © Shutterstock/Simon O'Neill Photography LOCAL COMPUTER MAC EXPERT * MAC & Laptop Repairs * Virus / Spyware Fixed * Windows 7 / 10, Upgrades * Wireless Internet, Security * Data Recovery, Outlook, Email * Hardware Upgrades, Custom PCs * Website Design, Software Support Fixed onsite same day Microsoft Certified Engineers Immediate call out 07758 450396 £1m boost for Cleethorpes regeneration programme Lincoln Uni climbs rankings 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 19/06/2019 12:52 Page 3Registered Charity No. 504913.
