< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES Boasting open farmland views of Fenland Countryside, this idyllic detached period farmhouse is placed on a 0.65- acre plot down a quiet lane, close to the town of Long Sutton. Nikki and her family have lived at Greenacres since February 2003, moving to the home after her husband surprised her with the property out of the blue. Nikki laughed: “My husband actually bought it without me knowing! We had three young children at the time and he said, ‘would you like to come and see your new house?’” The family extended the home in 2003 to suit their needs, creating a large open plan kitchen/dining/family room and more bedrooms, and have knocked through where the original kitchen was located to create a large reception room. 12 Á Perfect for the This month’s featured property is set in a serene location with an abundance of space for children to run free. One approaches the property from a gravel drive down the side of the house. While you can enter the home through a back door, into the utility room, which connects to an open-plan kitchen, we will begin out tour up front. One begins standing under the pitch-roofed, timber- clad, storm porch, and steps into a hall featuring dark-stained wooden floorboards. Ahead, a door leads to the dining area, from which one can access the main living room on the right. The almost 22 feet long room boasts an exposed brick fireplace with a log burning stove capable of heating the entire house - perfect for winter - and patio doors that open the space out onto a west-facing paved area often used for meals outside by the owners - ideal for summer. The dining room is positioned between an open, airy kitchen and family room, which bathe in light. Sitting to the front of the house, the family room features dark timber flooring and a fireplace with a timber surround and black granite hearth, which though currently unused could have an open fire or log-burner installed. To the back of the house is the off-white Shaker-style kitchen featuring wall and base units on three sides, an island topped with black granite in the centre, rustic tiles as a splashback and neutral porcelain tiles on the floor. There is also an integrated dishwasher, and a big black Rangemaster cooker with a gas hob, two electric ovens and grill. The sink, meanwhile, under a wide window, overlooks one of the home’s patios. From the kitchen area one can reach a utility room, which has a door to a shower, toilet, and washbasin. Upstairs one will discover five bedrooms and the family bathroom, which was recently redone with a contemporary feel and modern fittings including a separate bath, shower, close- coupled lavatory, and wall-mounted washbasin in a vanity unit. The master bedroom, taking full advantage of the property’s stunning location, features 10-14.qxp_Layout 1 29/06/2020 08:40 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 13 HOMES French doors opening to a Juliette balcony offering far-reaching, relaxing countryside views. The master also hosts a recently refurbished, modernised, ensuite with a large shower. Moving outside of the house, the property is surrounded by hedging. “It’s very private and quiet. There’s four gardens really,” Nikki said. A mature, landscaped garden sits behind the house, while a large lawn with a walnut tree amongst others is to the right side of the property. “This garden is what drew my husband to the property initially,” Nikki noted. “He said it was perfect for the kids to play football on!” To the left of the house, the garden is fenced off, making it completely 14 Á 10-14.qxp_Layout 1 29/06/2020 08:40 Page 414 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES secure - especially useful for dog owners - and there are two paved areas on each side of the home, prime for al fresco dining. The terrace accessible via a door off the kitchen attracts sun during most of the day during summer and extends to lawn divided by a unique curving brick wall. Additionally, out back, an area with old fruit trees, including plum and pear, waits to be found. The property also benefits from an outbuilding, constructed by the owners in 2016, with a three-bay car port in the middle, an office on one side and a storage space to the other, both of which have their own separate water closet. Further, the property is well placed for walking dogs, and one might even spot muntjac deer and owls amongst other birds. “You can easily go two or three miles with the dogs without knowing,” Nikki said. Though the family has thoroughly enjoyed their time at the property, they are now selling in order to downsize. Nikki explained: “Our daughter moved out a few years ago and we have two sons moving out this year. I just don’t want to be in the big place on our own.” Greenacres is now on the market with Fine & Country for offers in excess of £500,000. It’s indicative of an artist’s urge to explore and understand and Graham has travelled extensively, living and working across the UK before venturing to the Mediterranean area. He eventually moved back to the UK, settling in Lincolnshire where he now lives with his family. Throughout these travels, Graham was immersed in a variety of cultures, drawing in disparate influences which can all be gleaned from his pieces. Drawing and painting from childhood, Graham has followed the traditional route of many artists before him. Although he has had some formal training, he instead prefers to rely on his own sense of the world and has developed a particular and recognisable style using oils, acrylics and watercolours. Graham considers “art” in the broadest sense of the term but like many, he has own personal preferences, which include townscapes, historic buildings, and the county Capturing Graham Chalmers captures both the built and natural beauty of Lincolnshire in effortlessly evocative paintings. 18-19.qxp_Layout 1 29/06/2020 08:44 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 19 ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIRE material that can tell a story reflecting everyday life of both the past and present. Graham captures the atmosphere and essence of a time or place by stepping beyond the immediate visual aspects, allowing the observer to see the obvious but interpret the situation as they will. Always keen to push his own boundaries, Graham constantly strives to expand and develop his skills, probing and seeking new and exciting ways to present his subject matter using light, texture, and situation to punctuate his work. The result is often complex, evoking a sense of mystery and natural majesty. The emphasis on light provides a depth that is simultaneously tangible and impressionistic, particularly with his seascapes. The paintings of village and town settings are immersed in mystery, either in stormy skies and gothic compositions, or wreathed in the honeyed hues of golden hour light. The impression of the artist built up from gazing at his paintings is one who has lived many lives. And Graham has, in fact, had numerous careers, including law enforcement, business consultancy, and education. He is a published author and a composer/song writer, but retired from all of these to pursue his passion for art. Exhibiting regularly and carrying out commissions has resulted in his work being in the hands of both private collectors and institutions alike. THE LITTLE RED GALLERY Love art?
