A new season brings change and a fresh start to us all. This summer it’s all about taking tentative steps to go forth into our ‘new normal’. As a salon educator and manager, it is now time to get organised and prepare for a safe return to the salon. As we go into publication the rules are still not clear, but one thing is for sure there are new rules to follow. As we currently understand the rules are likely to include the following: Gillian Jackson, beauty educator and owner of Skin Couture Beauty Salon and Gillian Jackson Semi Permanent Make up, explains what to expect from future visits to the salon. The new beauty rules Safety first Although doors are open again the plan for salons is ‘by appointment only’ meaning no walk-ins. You can, of course, attend for your planned appointment. The salon can also still prepare gift vouchers or retail purchases for you to collect. Going solo Keeping movement and contact low for the initial weeks after opening is important for safety so the salon is strictly for one to one appointments, unfortunately this means 34-35.qxp_Layout 1 29/06/2020 09:04 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 35 HAIR AND BEAUTY no parties/group bookings or friends/family keeping you company until further notice. If you feel poorly or someone in your social circle has been unwell please delay treatments per government guidelines. Contactless greetings We have missed all of our clients, but no hugs, kisses or handshakes allowed! Ideally arrive with just the essentials (purse/keys/phone) rather than handbags and coats. Once in the salon you will very likely be asked to wash or sanitise hands. Express service One of the options of minimising contact and risk is to look at treatments that have a big impact in a short time. Express services mean less contact time and, therefore, less time for possible cross infection. If you feel nervous about having your usual service ask the salon about express treatment options such as brow shaping, tinting, file Tel: 01472 852063 or Email: skincouturebeauty@outlook.com & polish or gel application for nails and toes, back massage and mini facials. For longer services they may not be exactly as you remember with therapists following advice to minimise contact. One option is to let active ingredients do more of the work and minimise overall contact. For example, replacing an exfoliating scrub that requires massage into the skin, with an enzyme exfoliator that is applied and left a few minutes to work its magic. Another option is to introduce technology such as LED facials that can be virtually contactless and still give amazing results. Again, ask the salon for advise on the reduced contact treatments they offer, such as LED facials, reiki and lash lifting. For all services you may be required to temperature check on arrival and wear a mask, expect your therapist to be in gloves, mask and apron. For many treatments, this is already the norm. Clean checkouts There are three likely salon payment options. A bank transfer prior to service, contactless payment card or cash. Cash ideally would be the exact amount in an envelope allowing it to be left untouched for three days (yes, we are quarantining cash now!). There may also be an option to pay by phone in advance or use apple pay. So it’s the same, but a little different, as I imagine our lives will be for a few more months to come. Though the coronavirus crisis is impacting almost every aspect of our day-to-day lives and will likely hamstring the economy for years – if not decades – to come, it’s not been entirely without advantages. One of the biggest has been that more people are riding bikes. There are no downsides to cycling. It’s a green, clean way to travel, provides a leisurely way to take in the sights, scents and sounds of our beautiful county and also provides some of the best exercise around. If you’ve noticed a massive upsurge in the number of bikes out and about, you’re not imagining things. Bike sales have been soaring throughout the pandemic, with stores across the nation reporting a major spike in demand and new stock selling out almost as soon as it arrives. One online bike retailer even reported a 192% rise in sales since the start of the lockdown, while Halfords said its share price went up by 80%. It’s easy to see why there’s been such a demand over the last few months. The fact that many people have been working from home, coupled with the fact that non-essential travel has been heavily discouraged, means roads have been quieter than they’ve been for decades. Exercise has been one of few outdoor pursuits actively encouraged during lockdown and, along with the record-breaking temperatures we experienced over spring, many took the opportunity to get on their bikes. Now, the government is throwing its weight behind cycling, looking to get more people on their bikes after pledging its largest ever boost for cyclists and pedestrians back in May. Launched by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, the plans follow unprecedented levels of cycling and walking across the UK during the pandemic. The aim is to help encourage more people to choose alternatives to public transport when they need to travel, making healthier habits easier and helping make sure the road, bus and rail networks are ready to respond to future increases in demand. In the weeks following the launch, pop-up bike lands with protected space for cycling, wider pavements, safer junctions, and cycle and bus-only corridors were created as part of a £250 million emergency active travel fund - the first stage of a £2 billion investment, as part of the £5 billion in new funding announced for cycling and buses in February. The government will fund and work with local authorities across the country to help make it easier for people to use bikes to get around. Fast-tracked statutory guidance has also told councils to reallocate roadspace for significantly- increased numbers of cyclists and pedestrians. In towns and cities, some streets could become bike and bus-only while others remain available for motorists. More side streets could be closed to through traffic, to create low-traffic neighbourhoods and reduce rat-running while maintaining access for vehicles. Vouchers will be issued for cycle repairs, to encourage people to get their old bikes out of the shed, and plans are being developed for greater provision of bike fixing facilities. Many more will take up the Cycle to Work scheme, which gives employees a discount on a new bike. “During this crisis, millions of people have discovered cycling - whether for exercise or as a means of safe, socially- distanced transport. While there is no change to the ‘stay at home’ message today, when the country does get back to work we need those people to stay on their bikes and be joined by many more,” said Shapps “Otherwise, with public transport’s capacity severely restricted at this time, our trains and buses could become overcrowded and our roads gridlocked – holding up emergency services, critical workers and vital supplies. We know cars will continue to remain vital for many, but as we look to the future we must build a better country with greener travel habits, cleaner air and healthier communities.” Taking things further, Boris Johnson is launching an updated Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy this summer, with further measures to transform cycling and walking to deliver the government’s aims to double cycling and increase walking by 2025. These included the creation of a national cycling and walking commissioner and inspectorate; higher standards for permanent infrastructure across England; getting GPs to prescribe cycling and exercise, and creating a long-term budget for cycling and walking similar to what happens for roads. Well, what are you waiting for? The health benefits of cycling As well as being kind on the planet and the purse, regular cycling also has a host of health benefits, including: • increased cardiovascular fitness • increased muscle strength and flexibility • improved joint mobility • decreased stress levels • improved posture and coordination • strengthened bones • decreased body fat levels • prevention or management of disease • reduced anxiety and depression 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 29/06/2020 09:07 Page 238 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FOOD & DINING Sweet taste of summer Moving towards the middle of summer, you want quick, simple snacks and suppers that don’t scrimp of taste or visual impact.
