< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBRIGGowadays Brigg is considered a bustlingand lively market town, and restsalongside the busy M180. It’s also a primelocation for people needing access to Hull andthe Humber Bridge, while still living in ruralLincolnshire. Quite apt really when you considerthat, historically, Brigg’s function was to be a safeplace to cross the River Ancholme, first via theuse of a ford, and later in the 14th century –when the first stone bridge was built.Nowadays there are plenty of ways to cross theAncholme, but it’s still interesting to see that thetown remains a regular stopping point for peoplecrossing the Humber Bridge. In that sense, Brigghas kept its identity for almost a thousand years. In fact, many residents and businesses choose tolive in the town and commute further afield. It isalso home to a number of thriving companies, many of which can trace their history in the areaback through generations.Certainly Brigg’s bustling and pretty towncentre makes for a fabulous destination in its ownright. The pedestrianised Market Place includes avibrant mix of independent retailers and majornames, and many of the shops have been therefor generations. The area also has a fabulousfoody heritage. The market held there twice aweek, is for some, the most appealing time tovisit - as is the fourth Saturday of each monthwhen it plays host to one of the most popularBrigg throughthe agesBrigg was once a major crossing point for the River Ancholme, now almost athousand years later it serves a similar role for the Humber. Certainly the brightcolours and natural scents have gone along way to improving the image of thearea, and the setup has even beenadopted in many others villages andtowns across Lincolnshire. It’s not just the image of the town thatis thriving however, unlike many other12 Á10-12_Layout 1 17/07/2015 11:51 Page 212 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBRIGGtowns across Lincolnshire, Brigg remains apopular destination for those seeking alittle ‘retail therapy’, and the businessesthere are still doing good trade. Thismeans very few boarded up storefronts, and a generally more optimisticatmosphere for visitors. But for some otherbusinesses, it means an exciting newopportunity to expand, in what for manytowns – is still a very uncertain period. Earnshaw’s Fencing Centres are onesuch company, whose heritage stretchesback over 150 years, when they were asimple sawmilling business. Nowadaysthe Brigg centre offers a much widerrange of products tailored towardsoutdoor living and gardening. The Briggsite, which is run by Jim Scott, recentlyunderwent a major facelift in 2015, withextended display areas to showcase theirnatural products. The community in Brigg also activelyholds events to support the businesses intheir area, and just last month held BriggIndependents day to encourage morepeople to visit independent stores in thearea. This included live music and familyentertainment, to draw families to visit thetown. These little extra events that thearea holds is one of the key reasons whyBrigg is performing much better thanmany other rural towns in Lincolnshire, who do very little to actively draw visitorsto their high streets. The Christmas Festival is likely to bethe next milestone event to take placein the town, which is organised by theBrigg and District Lions. With stars fromthe Scunthorpe pantomime coming toopen the evening and switch on thelights, the town is set to be filled withcraft and charity fundraising stalls, providing festive food andentertainment for the whole family. Often seeingmore use than even a master bedroom, whilealso being a focus point for any visitors, decorating anddesigning a kitchen is a real way to stamp yourpersonality on a home. From large units such as cookers, cabinets andislands, to smaller decorative pieces and accessories, adding life to a kitchen can be as simple, orcomplicated, as a person desires. Themes play a strongpart in tying the room together however, and as alwaysit’s advised to have a central message in mind whenchoosing what to use. Modern and vintage remain popular themes, butthere are other things to keep in mind. For instance, ifaccessories are going to be used to add some characterto an otherwise plain kitchen, then how many is toomany?
