< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGThis month, we had the opportunity to visit D Papa’s Curry House, anauthentic Indian restaurant and takeaway taking pride of place in Caistor. Uponarriving for our meal, my partner and I were very impressed with the friendlinessof the staff, who were not only chatty without being overbearing - but also onlytoo happy to offer us advice on what meals would suit our tastes, and whatmight be too spicy for us.The restaurant itself boasts an authentic décor, mixing colours and palettes ina way seldom seen in Lincolnshire. As well as offering seating, Papa’s is also atakeaway, and throughout the night there was a steady stream of peoplecoming in to pick up their orders. Ultimately though, it is the food itself that we must judge a restaurant on, andwe’re happy to announce that D Papa’s scored very highly on that front. Forstarters I partook of the Chicken Tikka Chaat, while my partner opted for theChicken Tikka. My starter came with a tangy chaat masala sauce, which had areal kick as well as a gorgeous flavour. The meals came beautifully dressed andalso served on a mixture of modern plates, and authentic Indian dishes. Thecontrast really helps the meeting of modern and traditional that the entirerestaurant boasts. For our main courses my partner decided to have a Chicken Tikka masala, while I went for the more adventurous mixed Tikka platter, with lamb andchicken along with mixed vegetables. The meat itself was soft and delicious, while my partner was quick to point out how incredible hisown masala was. The meals are generous in size too, andperfect for sharing as we were quick to find out. We were made to feel more than welcome, and the livelyand friendly staff, along with fantastic food left us with a realsmile on our faces as we left. If yoursurname is Whitaker you’ll be ashowjumper. But there are manyalternatives in between and theright route is not always clear.“The perception is that if youcan ride, muck out and groom to a highstandard, then you’ll get a job in theindustry. This may be true, but it mayalso be at minimum wage, sharing acaravan and working a six day week. That’s not an attractive proposition longterm.“But are even the top yards going tobe impressed by a degree if your ridingisn’t up to scratch? Although manycourses offer riding as an element, sometimes the quality of teaching maybe lacking. Many people decide to gofor a non-riding degree in order to get adecent job and then keep their horses fora hobby rather than a career.”As Brenda points out, there is noguaranteed, foolproof route into theindustry and so it’s up to you to decidewhat area you wish to specialise in andhow you go about entering it. Brendasays, “If you’re still undecided, do lots ofresearch. There are a surprising numberof jobs that people never think ofbecause they are so focused on the ridingelement.“For instance, work riders and jockeysare not the only positions in racing yards– you could be the racing secretary, keeping all the administration in order, aspecialist horse transporter or abloodstock auctioneer. You could be selfemployed as a farrier or a saddler, orwork for an equine insurer or a charity.“In all cases you should probably getsome sound transferable business skillsand possibly an HGV licence might be agood start. Don’t feel pressurised intogoing to university immediately if it’s notfor you. You can go later if you think youneed to.
