Brigg itself often crops up assubject when taking snaps or sketching and with itsfascinating history, it’s really no wonder. The town name is derived from the Old Norse ‘bryggja’meaning jetty but in this instance it refers to ‘a bridge’ andreveals the crucial role the town has played throughout thecenturies. The land on which Brigg now stands is thought tohave been used for thousands of years as a crossing point tothe Ancholme River as well as gaining access to the riveritself. A jetty or causeway was erected on the riverside duringthe late Bronze Age and although its exact purpose remainsa mystery, it does indicate the sheer importance of thelocation. The area become known as ‘Glanford’ during theAnglo-Saxon period before it was founded as a new town atthe crossing place of the Ancholme and dubbed GlanfordBrigg around 1182/3, before the Glanford prefix wasdropped altogether. It might have started as a small fishinghamlet, but Brigg grew into an impressive town mirroringthe improvements and extension of the Ancholme whichincreased the area’s trade, commerce, buildings andpopulation. Reading the history can’t quite have the same impressionas seeing it all laid out in front of you. The Brigg HeritageCentre on the first floor of former Georgian coaching inn,the Angel complex, leads visitors through the ages of Brigg’sbountiful history. It incorporates the area’s Iron Age roots, through to Roman and medieval periods and even to morerecent history such as the World Wars. The jewel in thecrown of this impressive collection is the Bronze Age sewnplank boat, or ‘The Brigg Raft’ as it’s affectionately known, which is one of only two such finds on display in thecountry. It was originally excavated in 1974 where it wasthen preserved and stored in London. But it has beenproudly displayed in Brigg since 2013 where it returned tothe town, bringing with it a key part of the area’s heritage. The wood is remarkably well preserved, and needs to bePHOTOS: DOMINIC CUTHBERT28-31_Layout 1 25/07/2016 11:41 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY31BRIGGFOR THATOLD FASHIONEDPERSONAL SERVICEBRIGG BEDSCome visit our showroom at Princes Street, Brigg, DN20 8HGTel: (01652) 651828 Email: briggbeds@hotmail.co.ukwww.briggbeds.co.uk10% OFFVOUCHER**OFFER TO BE USED ONLY ONCEPER CUSTOMERSUBJECT TO TERMS AND CONDITIONSseen to be believed. The Angel complex is also home to one of the town’smost striking coffee shops, no easy feat when you considerthe competition. It also houses a Bike Hub to encouragemore cycling among locals and entice others to use theexpanding cycle path alongside the Ancholme – apicturesque route where riders can take in the diversewildlife both above and below the water. Brigg retains its link to the past with its yearly fairs, beingthe Summer Fest in June, the Horse Fair in August and aChristmas Fair which takes place at the end of November. While the Horse Fair doesn’t quite live up to the grandeurof its glory days, the tradition is kept alive with theequestrian activity taking place on the 5th August of everyyear. Folk music fans might note the date as being theopening line of ‘Brigg Fair’, a song best known as a choralarrangement by Percy Grainger. On top of these events aremore specialist gatherings such as the North LincolnshireMusic and Drama Festival in March, a beer festival in Mayand the Briggstock Acoustic Music Festival in earlySeptember. Brigg Live Arts also holds a bi-yearly culturalfestival and art exhibition in the town. They say the story of any town or village can be found inits pubs and, if that’s the case, then Brigg’s history is plain tosee. After all, it’s said to have the highest number of pubs inthe smallest location, and there’s a plethora of traditionalchoices to pick from, such as the Woolpack Inn and LordNelson in the Market Place; the Exchange Hotel and theDying Gladiator on Bigby Street - which is the only pub ofits name in the country. There’s also the Nelthorpe Arms,White Hart and the Yarborough Hunt on Bridge Street whichscooped CAMRA’s ‘pub of the season’ award back in 2014.It might sound like a lot, but appreciating all that art andsoaking up the history can be terribly thirsty work. But it’s not all arts, crafts and food markets, - Brigg TownFootball Club, known as the Zebras for their black andwhite striped home kit, enjoy a history that’s said to dateback to 1863. The team is also alleged to be the oldestassociation football club in Lincolnshire, as well as beingamong the oldest surviving clubs in the world. But thejury’s still out on that one. Suffice it to say, the locals arefiercely loyal to their team. The Ancholme Rowing Club, onthe other hand, can prove their roots go back to 1868 andstill enjoy regularly rowing up the river. Brigg is understandably protective and proud of itsindependent traders, with the formation of The Brigg TownBusiness Partnership in 2011 to support local traders in thetown, and was supported by the Campaign for theProtection of Rural England’s national ‘Shop Local’promotion – the partnership aimed at reinvigorating thelocal economy while safeguarding jobs and brining shopperthe very best in local food and produce. Not only does thishelp the town to preserve its identity, it helps to offer localsand visitors alike continued access to the variety of traders, continuing the towns trading heritage for futuregenerations. And the slew of designer clothing boutiques, butchers, historic coffee shops, jewellers, haberdasheriesand more are deserving of that protection so that thefriendly, community spirit of Brigg lives on. 28-31_Layout 1 25/07/2016 11:41 Page 432 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFASHIONAt last, high summer is upon us, so breakout the shades, skirts and sleeveless teesand soak up some rays, before thesunshine vanishes again…Summersupreme 32-41_Layout 1 25/07/2016 12:14 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY33FASHIONIchiIt’s high summer so say itwith style and with Ichi it’sall about big shades andspaghetti string tops.32-41_Layout 1 25/07/2016 12:15 Page 234 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFASHION132-41_Layout 1 25/07/2016 12:15 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY35FASHION1) SamoonAnimal print is back and better than ever asthe stylish Samoon number proves. 2) Gant With our rays rivalling the Med, it’s time forsome beach and poolside R&R, and this cutetop is ideal for wearing over a bikini orswimming cossie. 3) Marc CainMarc Cain captures a high summer in New York or Paris with this chicoutfit. 4) LauRieReflect the sun with the snowy shades of this LauRie look, just the rightside of Spartan. 5) BaslerThis Basler offering is somewhere between a sarong, dress andmumu, and is an absolute must have. 234532-41_Layout 1 25/07/2016 12:15 Page 436 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFASHION1) Taifun top This floral top from Taifun delicatelyoutlines your figure with flowingfabric and a clever cut. 2) OililySome colour and patterncombinations just don’t cut it, butthis audacious Oilily outfit rewritesthe rulebook. 3) MasaiMasai pair loose layers with brightwhites for a practical and coolingensemble. 4) Numph This gorgeous get-up from Numph isperfect for strutting your stuff, looking your best and catching atan. 123432-41_Layout 1 25/07/2016 12:15 Page 5Open from Monday - Saturday 9am - 5pm131 Burton Rd, Lincoln LN1 3LN.
