While you’ll likelyfind as many social media managers andbaristas as shop keepers these days, itspeaks volumes to our rich history. TheBritain we know and love today evolvedfrom trading. Local barter gave way tocommerce and trade routes, withcraftsmen selling their wares, andmerchants making a living travellingbetween towns and villages. Selling isingrained in our culture, and the greatmany historic market towns across thecountry are testament to that. Lincolnshire has more than its fair shareof market towns, being as it was anepicentre of national and global trade inbygone centuries. To this day the countyis a crucial agricultural provider. We’vecovered Brigg, Louth and Lincoln beforein previous issues, but this month we turnour attention to Bourne, set on theeastern slopes of the limestone KestevenUplands and the western edge of theLincolnshire Fens. Bourne is among the county’s mostimportant market towns, having grownup around a key Roman road – knownnow as King Street. Its name, though, isderived from the Anglo-Saxon word‘burna’ or ‘burne’ meaning water orstream, in reference to the clear naturalsprings that rise in the area. And thesesprings have put the town on the map. Itseconomy was principally based on ruralindustries until the railway opened up amarket for bottled mineral water. Todaythe town is still largely focussed onagriculture and food preparation forsupermarkets, but there are alsoimportant light engineering and tourismactivates. History buffs will find plenty to getexcited about in Bourne, with all mannerof historic and cultural attractions.Perhaps the biggest allure is GrimsthorpeCastle, offering visitors an historic housewith gardens and parklands. All this aswell as a gift shop, tea room, cycle hireshop and adventure playground for thelittle ones. Unlike similar attractions, the32 Á© Bowthorpe Park Farm© Bourne Abbey ChurchIDENTITYBourne This month we turnour attention toBourne, a markettown steeped inhistory with some ofthe most stunningbuildings, gardensand points of interestanywhere inLincolnshire. 31-33.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 11:59 Page 132LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBOURNEcastle is made of limestone, meaning ittakes on different colours and characterdepending upon the time of day and theintensity of sunlight. It’s clearly a hit withlocals and visitors alike, having accrued a‘Certificate of Excellence’ on TripAdvisor. Second perhaps to the castle is theAbbey, which was founded by Baldwinfitz Gilbert de Clare in 1138 for theArrouasian order of monks. It’s possiblethat the Abbey was erected on the site ofan earlier Saxon church, but there is noconcrete evidence either supporting ordisproving this claim. It is widelybelieved, however, that Bourne Abbeywas where the Ormulum – a Biblical textin Middle English – was writtensomewhere around 1175. There are plenty of beloved warmemorials in Lincolnshire, but one youmight have yet to visit is Bourne WarMemorial Gardens. Run by BourneUnited Charities, this park andrecreational area is well kept, beautifuland serene. It allows one to take in thenatural environment, whilst also holdingin reverence the honoured dead. Tranquilhardly does it justice. The natural environment is animportant part of the identity of Bourne, nestled in amongst the Fens. Among itsmore impressive points of interest is theBowthorpe Oak. Situated on theBowthorpe Park Farm, this revered oak isthe UK’s largest and oldest Girthed OakTree. Experts put the age of the tree atover 1,000 years – that means it was buta sapling during the Norman Conquest. As well as appearing in myriaddocumentaries, the tree also features inThe Guinness Book of Records. Threeguesses what for. History is right around every corner, with Baldocks Mill being the onlyremaining mill in the town and datingback over 200 years. According to theDoomsday Book, there were three millsin Bourne, with a mill on this same sitesince 1086. Of course, not everything is abouthistory in Bourne, with its charming31-33.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 11:59 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY33outdoor pool a continuing pull for locals and tourists alike. With the long hot summer we’ve been blessed with thisyear, doubtless the pool is the place to be, doubly so asthere’s nothing else quite like it for miles around. For sportfans there’s the local cricket team, plus the Bourne GolfCentre to work on your par and putt. Much like other market towns we’ve featured, Bournehas managed to retain its cultural identity and preserve itshistoric past whilst also welcoming in modern amenitiesand some big name chain shops. This careful balancemeans that tourists are satisfied, and locals haveeverything they could possibly want or need for on theirdoorstep. With all this culture, history and activities on offer, not tomention great shopping links and well respected schools,Bourne is the perfect place to settle down, raise a familyand enjoy the good life.© pxl.store / Shutterstock.com© Grimsthorpe Castle© Bourne Outdoor Swimming PoolKeeping businesson the up...We pride ourselves on providing a pro-active, friendly and accessible service.Experts in Accounts and Tax Returns Tax Planning and Book-Keeping Audits and Business AdviceWe’re here to get you in the right directionTo find out how get your business on the up visitwww.dextersharpe.co.ukOffices in Boston, Bourne, Horncastle, Lincoln, Louth, Skegness & SpilsbyCHARTERED CERTIFIEDACCOUNTANTS31-33.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 11:59 Page 3…and the living is easy.Details and prices correct at time of going to print.
