In addition, it’s highlylikely that a couple have lived together forseveral months, or even years, before the bigday and could be already consideredcompletely inseparable. For these people theevent is less about a formal joining of thefamilies, since the families have likely alreadybeen close for months. Instead, the big day isa celebration of an existing bond – and thatcan take many forms. It all depends on whatthe couple wants or needs. The top venues in Lincolnshire make use oftheir own team of wedding co-ordinators whocan help make your day work like clockwork. This doesn’t mean that your plans will behomogenised and you’ll have to follow thenever-changing plans wheeled out for everyprevious couple. The role of the weddingspecialists at the venue is to help turn yourdreams into reality. The increased informality of weddingsexplains why many venues now offermarquees to host the receptions. This doesn’tmean that the venues themselves aren’tattractive – quite the reverse, and indeed thelaw still requires the actual ceremony to beheld in a permanent building rather than atemporary structure like a marquee. What itdoes mean is that they offer an empty spaceentirely at the mercy of your imagination, without having to work around existingfixtures and fittings. So if you want tointroduce a specific colour scheme, this isyour big chance. When it comes to the actual day, the bride’sbeauty should be what many are focused on,and with a wide arrange of gowns and dressesavailable throughout Lincolnshire – you’rereally spoilt for choice. However, it’s also worthtaking the time to work on the foundationstoo, and as such there are many beauticiansand salons that cater to weddings, offeringspecific packages. One thing to keep in mindhowever, is that it’s often best to keep itsimple. Let nobody convince the bride they arenot the princess of the day, but even Disneyprincesses now tend to wear more realisticdresses and gowns than the flowing, multiple-storey, complex monstrosities of the lastdecade. It is the beauty and personality of thebride that needs to shine through. Not thecomplexity of the dress.Catering plays a major part and, if you’reusing a hotel then it’s likely that’ll be includedin the package and it’ll be of the higheststandards. They’ll have a host of options tochoose from, usually even if you’re thinking ofmoving away from the traditional weddingbreakfast and instead hosting a buffet or justcanapés. If that’s the case, though, make thisexplicit on the invites to ensure guests knowwhat to expect – most wedding guests willassume the traditional fare will be provided soif only canapés are on offer the music couldend up being drowned out by rumblingstomachs. Most venues will offer choices from a setmenu and usually hold a tasting session ingood time for you to sample the fare theyusually offer and plan the desired menu. Youshouldn’t be too adventurous when decidingon this, though, as your guests may not shareyour tastes. If you’re planning on serving upjust one menu, for practical reasons, make sureit’s something that will be acceptable to most.Even if you’re going for a Bollywood-themedwedding, it’s probably not the right place toserve a curry hotter than the sun. First impressions count, and the finishingtouches you apply to your wedding can set thetone for the entire event. Is your weddinggoing to be a traditional affair, what kinds ofcolours represent it, are you having weddingfavours? These are all things to consider, thatmany seem to forget about.Seat covers and table decorations can helpto add life to an event, but it’s important to© Shutterstock/irauaWeddings are nowadays less about the joining of twopeople, and more about celebrating a love that has existedfor long before. As such, they have become somewhat lessformal and a whole lot more exciting. 56 Á54-57.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:26 Page 256 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWEDDINGSmake sure they fit the theme and coloursof the wedding itself. After all, the lastthing anyone wants is for the seats toclash with the bride’s dress, or the coloursworn by the groom and best man. Despite the increased informality, it’sstill considered something of a no-no tosend the wedding list with the invites asit seems a bit presumptuous. In fact asmany couples are now getting marriedlater in life, the wedding list is slightlyless common these days, with couplesoften asking for charitable donations inits place.Making it legalAmid all the romance of the wedding, you can sometimes forget that the mainpurpose of the event is a legal ceremony. What goes on a piece of paper won’tmake any difference to your relationshipbut making sure you keep on top ofeverything will ensure the first few days ofmarried life will run as smoothly aspossible. If the bride is going to take on theirhusband’s name, this is an age-oldtradition so the legal requirements arepretty simple. Once the marriagecertificate is signed, all the official bodiesyou need to update your records with willhappily do so once you let them know. The one exception is the passportoffice which allows you to apply for apassport in your new name up to threemonths before you get married. Thepassport can’t be used before theceremony because it will apply from theday of the ceremony, but it’ll be ready forwhen you jet off on the honeymoon soyou don’t have to worry about anyconfusion. That’ll be particularly valuablewhen you’re going through customswhere having the same name on all yourtravel documents should ensure youshould sail through. There are other options. These daysmany brides intend to keep their maidenname for all circumstances. In that case, you can simply carry on using it as youdid before – signing the marriagecertificate will make no difference in thatregard. One option that’s becomingincreasingly popular is combiningsurnames to make a new double-barrelled surname. As yet this isn’tofficially recognised when signing themarriage certificate and therefore followsthe same procedure as you would if youwere changing your name to anythingelse – via a deed poll certificate. Youcould arrange to sign these at thewedding, though, or the groom couldeven do so in advance so the brideinherits it at the wedding. What goes on a piece of paper won’tmake any difference to your relationshipbut it’s worth bearing in mind that, in theeyes of the law, the main purpose of theevent is to sign the register and make itall official.© Shutterstock/Monkey Business Images54-57.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:26 Page 3*Wedding Packages from £4500*Bespoke Weddings from £1500Bailgate | Lincoln | Lincolnshire LN1 3AR For more details, a wedding pack or to arrange an appointment, please call us on 01522 563 298 | email weddings@whitehart-lincoln.co.uk www.whitehart-lincoln.co.uk Follow us on twitter @WhiteHartLN1* Please ask for further details, terms & conditions applyTHE PERFECTWEDDING LOCATIONThe White Hart Hotel offers a truly breathtakingsetting to host the most important day of your life. The delicate petals gentlycup a centre of yellow fronds, coloured like the sun. Youcan see one of these flowers on still and slow-movingwater such as ponds, ditches, lakes and canals. With its abundance of waterways and pond-friendlygardens, Lincolnshire is the perfect place for the elegantwhite water lily to flourish. LincolnshirewildlifeOf course, there’s more to this flower than just its petals, nestled as it is in amongst verdant lily pads floating on thesurface of the water. The rest of the plant is submergedbeneath the surface, springing up from the mud on thebottom of a body of water. It’s heartening that this beautifulflower is born from the cold and murky depths. This is theright time of year to see it bloom too, with the lily openingin the sunshine from June to August. It’s worth seeing, too,as the white water lily produces the UK’s largest flower, growing up to 20cm in diameter and comprising 20-25petals. After flowering, the stalk will coil and drag the lilybeneath the surface where the fruit develops. Whenthe seeds are ripe, they are released and rise back upto the surface. The waves and current disperse thembefore they sink and germinate in the bottom mudsand the whole process starts all over again. While the water lily has long been a staple ofpoetry, it’s also beloved of backyard ponds as itprovides shelter for frogs and early nectar forinsects. The shade their petals and pads offer alsohelps to shelter any fish, and helps to keep algaegrowth down. As they absorb nutrients in the waterthat might also feed undesirable green plants, pondwater is kept clear and clean looking. If your pond islooking a little lacklustre, why not add a few water lilies.© Shutterstock / Yuriy Kulik 58-59.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 11:09 Page 1© Shutterstock / Kokhanchikov 58-59.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 11:09 Page 2Next >
