And so it is with thismonth’s walk, which begins in Bloxholm,a name which is patently Saxon. Thereare still signs of mediaeval remains, butthis sleepy village has plenty of its owncharm. Readers will be delighted to learn thatour walk passes part of the intricate storyof the village. There was once animpressive Hall here, built in the 17thcentury and later enlarged by theManners family. Though it wasdemolished over a hundred years ago,the surviving garden wall forms akeystone of this month’s trek. Be sure andpack your cameras. More village remains await us when wearrive in Brauncewell, located this time inBLOXHOLM ANDBRAUNCEWELLWith summer at its finest,we turn to one of themost charming jauntsthrough the countryteeming with no shortageof hidden sights to see. Continuedown this path, passing a pond on ourleft, until we reach a long strip ofwoodland. We turn left into woodland.3 This path winds its way throughSpruce Covert and Four Acre Plantation.Following the waymarkers through thewood we emerge onto a single trackroad. The road bends to the right to HillFarm. We carry on straight through openfields and the village of Bloxholm can beseen ahead.4 This track joins the public road, where we bear left, towards Bloxholm.Continuing along the road until we reacha curious round hexagonal house on ourleft. 5 Just after the round house, we takethe path off to the left, along a cinderpath which leads left towards the oldwalled garden belonging to the hall.Continuing past the old gates until wereach the corner of the garden wall.6 At this point the cinder path bearsright into private property, following thegrassy path leading off to our left. Wetake this path, keeping the hedge on ourright. The path bends right over an oldfootbridge and takes us to a farm track.7 Turning right onto this track, wecontinue until we see a wooden gate onour right with the hall in the distance.8 Turning left here onto the broadgrassy path which leads between fieldstowards the wooded mound known asThe Mount. Continuing the circular route, pass through the gap in the hedge, crossa stream and a stile into the pasturebeyond. A path continues up the slope toThe Mount.9 At the Mount, we continue along thetrack, through four sets of metal gatesand past the farmyard at Mount Farm, returning through the metal gates.the last field before Manor Farm. Sokeep those eyes peeled and, if you’ve apair of binoculars, all the better. It’sbelieved that the earthworks in the areabehind the church are the remains of the17th century gardens of the ManorHouse. One of our favourite parts of thesewalks is seeing all the beautifularchitecture of English churches. Thechurch in Brauncewell was rebuilt in 1855but, thankfully, kept its characteristicmediaeval tower. THE ROUTE1 From the Stepping Out Car Park atPeacock Lodge, we walk straight ahead, through the wooden gate and down thewide farm track.2 Just before we reach Mount Farm onour left, we look out for a track leadingright alongside a large Blackthorn hedge.PHOTOS COURTESY OR RICHARD PICKSLEY72-73.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:32 Page 2 ONOHALLTBIXHEITONHLTA eska fl fls illolsnossssrereCCCCIIIIE CECamcones lolesa99pkam EPIC CENTR /LincolnshireShowground@showglincs@LincsShowground.lincolnshireshowground.co.uk wwwor visit our website:01522 522900 o book your next event with us call us onT74-77.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:34 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY75LINCOLNSHIRE SHOWThe Lincolnshire Show has become animportant part of life here at LincolnshireToday, having attended the show almostevery year during our thirty-plus yearhistory. Located by the main ring, ourfabulous marquee has become a port ofcall for clients and readers alike, lookingto meet the team and put a face to aname. Not only have we forged lastingfriendships at bygone Shows, but thetwo-day event gives us the chance tocatch up with old acquaintances, formercolleagues who’ve moved on to pasturesnew, and long-time friends. Our marquee this year was stunning, ifwe do say so ourselves. But we’re not sovain to take all the credit, with theballoons provided for by Lincoln’s ownParty Planet and the delicious buffetcourtesy of Jocasta’s. We also shared ourspace this year with our friends at AllisonHomes, who our readers were all toohappy to chat with. That’s to say nothingof the satisfaction derived from meetingclients, catching up with contributors and,of course, meeting you, our dear readers.Hearing first-hand what you do (or don’t)love about the magazine is invaluable, and knowing that our advice andrecommendations are still held in suchhigh regard makes this all worthwhile. The range in our readers just serves tohighlight the wonderful diversity acrossthe county, with the Show bringingeveryone together for a celebration of art, agriculture, food and more. In fact, thisyear the youngest attendee was just fourdays old, while the oldest was onehundred. Don’t just take our word for it,though, this year’s Show was thoroughlyenjoyed by all. “This year’s Show has been a roaringsuccess – we’ve had beautiful weather, agreat turn out and some fantasticentertainment and animal showcases andI think the food and shopping justimproves year on year,” says LincolnshireShowground CEO Jayne Southall. “It’s been great to see so many families76 ÁA look back at theLincolnshire Show This year’s Lincolnshire Show was one of the very best. Clearly we weren’t alone, withsome 60,000 visitors descending on the Showground for what has been one of itsbusiest two-days to date. That amounted to a massive 20,832 ice creams sold. Not badfor an event in its 134th year. 74-77.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:34 Page 276 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYLINCOLNSHIRE SHOWand school children at the Show this year– the Discovery Zone and Schools’Challenge means that they get to havefun while they learn about agriculture andtheir role in ensuring we maintain asustainable environment, as well asgetting to know more about their localhistory.”This year was one of the mostRAF 100 theme flyingsuccess for Lincs Show 2018More than 60,000 visitors flew through the gates at theLincolnshire Showground, for one of the busiest Show years todate.Visitors, traders and competitors were all smiles as clear skies anda great atmosphere led to an action-packed agricultural andhistorical Lincolnshire Show, which is organised by the LincolnshireAgricultural Society. Advanced ticket sales were up compared to the previous year atevery stage and this theme continued on the gate with theShowground team reporting an increase in footfall and traderscommenting on a great appetite for their products.George Eustice MP, minister of state for agriculture, fisheries and food, who visited the Show on Thursday, said: “This is mysecond year at the Lincolnshire Show and I think it’s a fabulous show, it’s kept its agricultural roots and remained true to itsheritage and receives a lot of public support.” For more information, visit www.lincolnshireshow.co.uk.© Kamara Photographyimportant in the show’s history, celebrating the hundred year anniversaryof the RAF. And the organiser’s did notspare the expense, with displays, marquees and people themselves alldaubed in the patriotic red, white andblue colour theme. It was a joyouscelebration of just what makes thiscounty, this country, so special. As part of the celebrations, there was abreathtaking parachute display from thetalented RAF Falcons. Though theblustering wind threatened the display, the wind subsided leaving the teamdazzling the crowds with theirchoreographed landing. It was truly asight to behold. No celebration of Britishaviation would be complete without adisplay from our very own Red Arrows, and what a display it was. No matter howmany times we see those gleaming redplanes perform, there’s still a magic to it. The grandparade of livestock in the Main Ring, meanwhile, was a feat unto itself and hadus manically snapping as many pictures aswe were able. With all we’ve been able tosee and do at this year’s Show, we couldeasily put out an entire supplement. While the displays and spectacles arean important part of the experience, theShow is as much about its stalls. This yearthere were 600 trade stalls, sellingeverything from handmade furniture, artsand crafts, boutique jewellery and locally-produced cosmetics. Then there’s thefood court, which had us loosening ourbelts and feeling pleasantly plump by theend of the two-day event. It was averitable feast, with cuisines from all overthe world. It was the celebration of localproduce that had us most excited, though, with live demonstrations and freesamples. Truly, Lincolnshire is a wonderfulplace to live, work and visit. 1) Young Charlie from Derick Tindall Birds of Prey did all the falconry displays at the Show this year. 2) Miss Lincolnshire herself, Chloey Rose, dropped by to pose with our June issue in her stunning red dress. Chloey iscurrently raising funds for Global’s ‘Make Some Noise’ Charity as part of her participation in the Miss Great Britain 2018.If you’d like to donate, visit www.missgb2018.everydayhero.com/uk/miss-lincolnshire-gb-2018.3) We love everything equestrian here at Lincolnshire Today, so as far as we’re concerned, Bransby Horses is doing thelord’s work. We just had to drop by their stall and say hello. 4) We were delighted to catch up with our garden expert, Ed Fuller from Fullers Forestry and Landscaping. 5) Here’s our very own Kerry Randerson posing with our June issue in front of one of the many stunning planes ondisplay. 6) Who doesn’t love a bit of vintage dress up? Certainty not these folks, who kindly stopped by our marquee in theircharming costumes. 12345674-77.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/2018 12:34 Page 4Lincolnshire 25 – 29 JulyLincolnshire InternationalChamber Music Festival, various venuesThe Lincolnshire InternationalChamber Music Festival welcomessome of the finest international artiststo the county for five days of music atvarious locations around the region.
