With all the unusual forecasts and torrential downpours it can be easy to think that the country has gotten out of control – a result of Brexit no doubt – but the summer solstice still shone bright for us all. Moving into August, we can hopefully expect more of that, as barbecue weather kicks in. As always remember to where sunscreen while enjoying the hot days and stay hydrated. I prefer to make sure that’s with some nice Pimms, but other drinks are available. Whatever your choice, August is a great time to be getting out in the garden – be it for the barbecue, a little maintenance or that last big design project. There are going to be earlier and dimmer nights soon, but we’ve still got a few weeks left of summer so make the most of them. If you need inspiration on what to do in those remaining summer days look no further than the various shows still taking place across Lincolnshire. From county fairs to re-enactments, plays and musicals – the county is alive and bustling. So make sure to check out our `what’s on` section for all the latest news. While some employers are concerned with dogs in the office being a distraction, it was found that those who bring their dogs to work report increased absorption in their work (33.4%) and more dedication towards their work (16.5%). They also report an overall increase in work engagement by 14.4%. “Our results show that far from being a distraction, (a fear expressed by some in our earlier work) allowing dogs in the workplace has the potential to improve employees’ focus and probably productivity too,” said Dr Daniel Mills from the School of Life Sciences. “Forward-thinking companies should consider very seriously if they can accommodate dogs in the workplace and the Purina Pets at Work programme can enable them to do this efficiently.” Lincolnshire charities merge to better serve county Community Lincs and YMCA Lincolnshire are merging together to combine the strengths, skills, resources and knowledge of both charities. Community Lincs will become a distinct service and sub brand of YMCA Lincolnshire. Services it currently delivers will remain unaffected and it will retain its office in Sleaford along with all its staff members. “This merger is a great opportunity to honour both Community Lincs’ and YMCA Lincolnshire’s long-standing history as creative, ambitious and community-focused charities in the county,” said Caroline Killeavy, CEO of YMCA Lincolnshire. Gail Jackson, Chief Executive of Community Lincs, added: “Merging with a like-minded charity, YMCA Lincolnshire, demonstrates our mutual ambition to develop and deliver excellent needs led services which can provide the best possible outcomes to the individuals and communities we work with.” The merger is slated to take place in October following a period of consultation. There’s lots to love about Lincolnshire, but there’s no denying we’re underserved when it comes to broadband speeds and digital connectivity across the county. That’s why Lincolnshire County Council is urging communities and businesses not to miss out on government funding to boost broadband speeds in their area. There are currently two schemes that provide funding for broadband improvements in rural areas. The Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme provides grants of £500 - £2,500 towards the cost of full fibre broadband, which offers much faster and more reliable speeds. Hard-to-reach communities and businesses could also benefit from the Rural Gigabit Connectivity Scheme, which is targeted at those areas that are unlikely to benefit from private sector investment in the near future. Local organisations, such as schools and parish councils, can bid for funding to install a gigabit connection to a public building, which will in turn make the surrounding area more likely to attract commercial investment. © Shutterstock/asharkyu latest news © Shutterstock/eva_blanco Boosting broadband in rural Lincolnshire Take the dog to work for higher work satisfaction, says research 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 19/07/2019 09:40 Page 1Fans of Wild Bill will soon be able to follow a tour of Boston borough locations used for filming of the ITV crime drama. The first episode screened in June residents keenly spotted some of the local spots used in the opening scenes. “I think we were all a little anxious about how Boston might be portrayed, but I thought it was brilliant,” said Cllr Nigel Welton, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for tourism, arts, culture and heritage. “I loved the opening scene as Wild Bill arrived in this country and declared to his daughter that they were going to Boston, the original Boston and probably the best, and said that’s where the Pilgrims came from. “The landscape is clearly an important part of the story and we are looking forward to how that is developed. We will be doing all we can to capitalise on the series and are already working on a tour guide for the filmed locations.” Local man crosses UK in tractor for charity Lincolnshire local Kev Chambers has completed his mammoth 1,000-mile journey from John O’Groats to Lands’ End on his tractor to raise money for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance. He planned the marathon trip with his late father, who bought and refurbished the vintage 1965 David Brown tractor that Kev used during the challenge. He chose to raise funds for the charity after his friend Paul was involved in a serious road accident involving a motorbike and a tractor. Due to the severity of Paul’s injuries, the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance was immediately dispatched to the scene to help get him to the nearest major trauma centre as quickly as possible. “Reaching the finish line was incredibly emotional. I had a few tears, and it was very well worth doing for such an incredible cause,” said Kev. You can still donate to Kev’s JustGiving page by visiting www.justgiving.com/fundraising/kev-chambers. Works bringing new life to Skegness park Construction has begun on the new Tower Gardens Community Building, bringing a new lease of life and enhancing the popular Skegness park. Midlands contractor G F Tomlinson is delivering the design and construction of the innovative building via the Scape Regional Construction framework, for Skegness Town Council. Due for completion in early 2020, the £1.6 million project will create a centrally located, mixed-use community building which is fully accessible to all, supporting the Council’s ambitions for a more inclusive environment, workplace and place to visit. The design of the new building responds to the existing site and surroundings, celebrating the vast history of the area whilst meeting changing demands and creating a functional and useable mixed-use community building. The building will include a multi-purpose function room and event space, a changing places hygiene suite, a kitchen tearoom and café, as well as council offices. The Tourism Sector Deal aims to prepare Britain for an extra nine million visitors per year and makes a commitment to build 130,000 new hotel rooms by 2025. It will create a new Tourism Data Hub to allow businesses to better target overseas visitors and it will support the creation of 10,000 additional apprenticeships for people building their careers in the tourism and hospitality sectors. Up to five new Tourism Zones will deliver a direct boost to holiday destinations across the country, helping to create new jobs and support improvements to transport connections, in a move welcome by the Greater Lincolnshire LEP and Visit Lincoln. “We understand the Government is planning up to five pilot Tourism Zones and we strongly believe that Greater Lincolnshire should be one of them,” said Ruth Carver, Director of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP. More than a thousand people took part in clinical research at Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT) sites across the county during 2018/19. The significant increase in research participation - up 121.3% from 478 participants the previous year – is the third largest percentage increase in research participation of any mental health trust in England. Figures released by the Clinical Research Network (CRN East Midland), part of the National Institute for Health Research, reveal that participants were given the opportunity to take part in 34 different clinical trials, up from 26 in 2017/18. In addition to helping improve treatment and develop new medicines, evidence suggests that research active organisations are able to deliver better outcomes for patients. The inaugural Eye Ball event took place in October 2017 where the team raised around £900 for MACS, a charity which supports families of children born with no eyes or under-developed eyes. This year, the organisers wanted to go bigger and raise more, and the results speak for themselves. With a total of 115 guests, this year’s Ball raised an impressive £1,400. The evening was compered by Radio Lincolnshire’s Melcin Prior while Catherine Ball from Guide Dogs – accompanied by her guide dog Moss – came along to give a brief talk regarding the charity.
