The walls of this settlement can still be seen today, with one section displayed in the library. Since the 19th century, Roman Horncastle has been known as Banovallum, which translates as “Wall on the River Bain”. It’s a moniker many of the town’s businesses – and the secondary modern school – have adopted. There has been some doubt cast on the linguistic origins, however, with some claiming this 19th century interpretation was actually a mistaken reading of the 7th century list of Roman towns. So Banovallum may, in fact, refer to Caistor. But it’s become such a part of the town’s identity that at this point it doesn’t really matter. What we do know for certain is that the town’s modern name is derived from the Saxon title of “Hyrncastre”. History is clearly important to Horncastle, where antique shops rival pubs for numbers. By our count, there’s around eight, though we’re sure there’s probably a few more tucked away here and there. There are also several churches, including All Saints Church and St Benedict’s Church. Most stunning of all is St Mary’s Church, parts of which dates back to mid-12 century. Evidence points to an earlier Saxon Minster on the site and there’s even been suggestions that there was a Roman church there even earlier. Over the years, it has been an important site for Christian worship, but also for conflict, with strong connections to the Lincolnshire Rebellion of 1536. The so-called ‘Lincolnshire Rising’ saw local Catholics revolt against the formation of the Church of England by Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell’s dissolution of the monasteries. Later still, the church became cemented in the regional story of the English Civil War. Historically, agriculture has provided much of the town’s employment and this tradition largely continues to this day. Horncastle is surrounded by arable land and there’s no shortage of farm equipment suppliers within easy reach. But the times are changing. While agriculture will remain important to the town’s health and heritage, retail and the service sector are becoming of greater importance. While there’s something undeniably quaint about a historic market town, few can continue without 32 Á CHARTERED CERTIFIED ACCOUNTANTS We’re here to get you in the right direction To find out how to get your business on the up visit www.dextersharpe.co.uk Offices in Boston, Bourne, Horncastle, Lincoln, Louth, Skegness & Spilsby 30-33.qxp_Layout 1 19/07/2019 10:11 Page 232 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HORNCASTLE embracing modernity. One of the town’s most popular places to visit is the Sir Joseph Banks Centre, named after the famous 17th century naturalist, botanist and all-around explorer. With a variety of different rooms filled with unique, quirky and handmade gifts, it’s safe to say you’ll find things here not available anywhere else. It’s also home to the Tourist Information Centre, who’ll be happy to field your questions and direct you to other interesting places to visit. No wonder the Centre is often referred to as a “hidden gem” and the town’s “little treasure” by smitten visitors. Despite its many sights, shops and attractions, Horncastle’s most popular destination according to reviews on TripAdvisor is a garden – specifically the Walled Garden Baumber which we covered in our May issue. The blend of blue and gold is one thing, but just look at the collision of abstract patterns. And that’s without saying anything about the beautiful cuffs and collarless design. Opposite: LauRie Not wearing double denim is one of those silly old fashion rules the world would be better off without. It’s a great look, but there’s one thing to bear in mind – don’t go wearing double denim with a loud top or tee-shirt.
