With this, hairdressers and beauty salons have reopened, but the approaches people are taking to hair and beauty present a dichotomy. Though some have been desperate to break out of the pandemic’s beauty restrictions with a drastic makeover, others are keen to keep up the natural look that lockdown has allowed them to embrace. When it comes to hair, now that an expert can be booked, people are asking for something new. An easy way to switch up one’s hairstyle is with a fringe. Yes, fringes are making a return this summer, particularly soft, French, choppy fringes - think Marianne in Normal People. Pixie cuts are also expected to be popular this season as a dramatic, riskier change, fitting for the hotter days. This desire for a revamp also applies to colour. Perhaps unsurprisingly for the summer season, blonde is in vogue. Celebrities across the spectrum have illustrated this trend to show fresh, bright looks. The shades being selected run the whole gamut, with icy white making a comeback, especially on short hair, as well as more attainable yellow blondes with warmer golden shades. With salons having long waiting lists, for those itching to go as blonde as possible, as soon as possible, it may be wise to choose a style featuring a more natural root for a low maintenance colour - a shadow root can be your best friend here. Something to bear in mind when picking up the bleach is that while you may go blonde as planned, it is likely you will be unable to keep it up for long without the assurance of future regular appointments, particularly if you are naturally dark. Trendy “Instagrammable” blondes following this advice and gaining further popularity include mushroom blonde, an ashy, not quite blonde shade teetering on light brown, and toasted coconut blonde, mixing in a dark root that transitions in a gradient into blonder ends. For brunettes looking to brighten up their locks without ditching brown, summertime calls for honey tones (à la Kate Middleton’s transformation), face-framing highlights or a Balayage highlight for a sun kissed vibe. Meanwhile in the realm of red hair, cherry and copper colours are all the rage. Though salons opening has marked change for many, the gradual ending of lockdown has conversely seen people look to enhance their natural hair texture, especially curls, after setting aside styling tools and heat. To make the most of natural locks, layers are being introduced to bring volume and movement. But with quarantine providing plenty of time for hair growth, the opening of hairdressers has seen a much more simplistic approach with only a trim required to get rid of dead ends as people aim to maintain their grown-out hair. This is seeing a lot of lobs (or long bobs) and shaggy looks with side-swept fringes. While often hair is cut back into a bob for the summer season, this year is seeing more grown out, longer styles. Mirroring the opposition seen in hair choices, the same can be said for makeup. On the one hand, minimal, barely there, makeup to embrace natural beauty is on the cards alongside a key focus on skin care products over makeup, such as face scrubs and creams. Say goodbye to full coverage makeup for a routine of exfoliating and moisturising, light weight foundations, minimal concealer, and a good highlighter. The summer is also seeing powder highlighters switched out for balms for a 3D shine akin to the well-known glass skin trend. On the other hand, bold looks are on the scene as people strive to have more fun with makeup after being stuck in the house. This is seeing the rising use of tinted mascara, with blue notably popular, colourful graphic liner, and neon shadows, with the ‘80s making its return. One thing is for certain, the introduction of masks is seeing fresh focus on the eyes and bold, fluffy brows above all else, as the main visible area for expression. With this, mascara or falsies are on the up to achieve voluminous lashes and add a little pop to the face. Stylish, shorter nails are also up for consideration as a more hygienic option, in the wake of the pandemic, next to the simultaneous trend for colourful nail art, from tie dye, to gradients. With hairdressers and beauty salons open once again, customers are taking one of two routes: drastic makeovers or maintaining their new love for the natural. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 29/07/2020 12:03 Page 2Next >
