While the rest of the country goes crazy, we’ve experienced a heat wave that has sapped the strength of many – ourselves included. It’s a curious and amusing fact of English life that we wish for the weather to be good and then complain that it’s too good, but perhaps understandable given amber weather warnings and some of the hottest summer days on record. Moving into August we can look forward to slightly cooler days and a stiff breeze to help break away the energy-sapping heat. August is a favoured month of mine because it’s still warm but not so blisteringly hot as July, and because it’s a time of holiday for a lot of people. Schools will be off until September meaning no more dodging the school rush on the way into work. For those with children, especially young children, it does mean a sudden need to find things to do to keep them busy. For that might we suggest our events pages as a stop-gap solution, but also signing them up to some local hobby or activity clubs. Many children were left socially starved during the lockdown and social development is an important part of growing up, so try to be pro-active about not leaving the kids to be kept busy by the computer and television. In this issue we take a glimpse at the weddings industry and see how it is faring on the recovery from lockdown – and if your wedding was postponed due to Coronavirus, perhaps you’ll find some tips and tricks in there. We also take a look at the latest fashions and trends and delve into the wild and often confusing world of online hair and beauty tips to try and make some sense of the madness. All this and more in our August issue of Lincolnshire Today. Good reading, as always. The award was given to Sally for her outstanding nurse leadership and the work she put into developing the Lincolnshire Palliative End of Life Care Website for both the public and professionals. The Community Nursing Cavell Star Award is sponsored by NHS England and Improvement and is open to all nurses that are part of the National Community Nursing Plan. The aim of the award is to recognise and celebrate community nursing and all of the diverse professionals within the group that carry out such vital duties each day to provide care within the communities. Sally Finch said: “I’m humbled and surprised to receive this award and truly honoured. It is a privilege to work in such a dedicated team that strives to give the best possible palliative care to patients and families in Lincolnshire.” Boston Borough Council has cemented its commitment in transforming an undervalued and under-utilised part of the town centre. At the council’s Cabinet meeting members unanimously backed plans to submit a bid for up to £20m of funding as part of the second round of the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The ambitious plans seek to attract Government investment to deliver new public realm, as well as bringing forward adjacent sites for a variety of uses. The proposals will address the vacant Crown House and B&M buildings, and the proposal is intended to be high-quality and high-impact making a visible positive difference for the short and longer-term. The proposals will then compliment the wider regeneration ambition for the area. Cllr Paul Skinner, leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for Boston to bring impactful regeneration of a brownfield site right in the town centre and I’m pleased members have given it their full backing.” A decision on the outcome of the bid from the Government is expected in the Autumn. Significant transformation set for White Hart Hotel as new owner revealed One of Lincoln’s most well-known hotels, The White Hart has been acquired by Coleby-based chartered surveyor and businessman, Andrew Long. Andrew Long, principal director of Travel Sector Property Limited (TSPL), said: “We are delighted to have acquired this historic 50-bedroom hotel in its unique Uphill location. “We are proud to own this property, located within the imposing presence of the iconic Lincoln Cathedral and a few steps away from the city’s Norman Castle. We look forward to progressing our proposals for significant capital investment to upgrade and improve the existing facilities.” Taking ownership of the hotel and garages on the city’s popular Bailgate, Andrew has acquired The White Hart as a going concern, by way of an ‘off market’ transaction negotiated directly with Ambar Paul, principal of Contemporary Hotels. The current general manager Ian Robinson and all employees will be retained under the new ownership. TSPL has also entered into a Management Agreement with Luxury Hotel Management Limited (LHM), owned by Nigel Chapman and colleagues who are well-established and highly experienced hoteliers. © stock.adobe.com/ Chris Loneragan latest news 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 12:57 Page 1New electric vehicle chargers to be installed across North Lincolnshire Twenty new electric vehicle chargers will be installed in car parks across North Lincolnshire – giving drivers access to clean, green energy. The project, designed to create a future-proof network of charging infrastructure ahead of the global transition to electric vehicles, has been developed with £80,000 of Government cash. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We know electric vehicles are the future of transport and, with Government cash, we have started the transition to ensure the infrastructure is in place to support the anticipated growth – clear evidence of levelling-up. “And, at the same time as future-proofing North Lincolnshire for the global transition to electric vehicles, there is an immediate benefit to those people already driving electric vehicles. “Many more drivers can now more conveniently charge their vehicles – and take advantage of the two hours free parking available across the area.” Lincolnshire County Council has led a bid for almost £1m in funding, as part of Government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Pilot, which could deliver hundreds of new electric vehicle charging points. A partnership of five local authorities across the Midlands region, alongside Sub-National Transport Body Midlands Connect submitted the bid. If successful, the £935,355 will be distributed between Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, Herefordshire, Rutland and Stoke-on-Trent Councils. It is expected that this support from Government will attract an additional £2.8m of private sector investment, with the cumulative funds being used to install a total of 322 standard and 27 rapid public EV chargers across the Midlands. In Lincolnshire, the funding will be used to deliver 101 standard and 8 rapid charging points across the county. The majority of these will be on-street chargers in residential areas with the remainder being placed in council-owned carparks and other council-owned land. It is hoped that this pilot could pave the way for a larger, region-wide installation scheme. Lincolnshire leads £1m electric vehicle charging New services for children and families to tackle childhood obesity A new package of support services for children, young people and their families has been announced for Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire County Council has committed £674,000 for the new Child and Family Weight Management Service over the next two years to tackle childhood obesity. It will be provided by One You Lincolnshire, building on their current integrated lifestyle service for the county. Councillor Wendy Bowkett, executive councillor for public health, explained: “We know there has been a rise in childhood obesity levels across the nation and don’t expect Lincolnshire to have been any different – it was clear during the pandemic and beyond, children couldn’t move around and exercise as much as they would normally do. We’re determined to do something about it. “These new services will provide more targeted interventions around weight management and healthy lifestyles to support children and their families to be able to help themselves to keep fit, eat well and stay healthy. At the end of their programmes family members will be able to see and measure how the activities have made a difference and be encouraged to keep up their healthier lifestyles.” point bid © stock.adobe.com/ teksomolika Holly Mumby-Coft MP, Cllr John Davison and Cllr Rob Waltham charge a North Lincolnshire Council van at the Parishes car park in Scunthorpe. © stock.adobe.com/ spotmatikphoto 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 12:57 Page 2Grimsby makes shortlist for Rolls-Royce factory Grimsby has been named as a potential location for a £200 million Rolls-Royce factory which will manufacture the ‘heavy vessels’ for its small modular reactor (SMR) power stations. Two sites in North East Lincolnshire are on a shortlist of eight announced by Rolls-Royce, which launched a competition at the start of the year asking for development bodies to bring forward locations. The factory would be the first of three to be built by Rolls-Royce, and the largest and most complex facility. Construction would begin once the go-ahead has been received to build a fleet of SMRs in the UK. The Greater Lincolnshire LEP has been undertaking a great deal of preparatory work with North East Lincolnshire Council to develop a proposal for Rolls-Royce focused on two sites: Pioneer Park at Stallingborough and the former Tioxide site on Moody Lane. Rolls-Royce SMR Chief Executive Tom Samson said the final location would be chosen from the shortlist, adding that the winner would benefit from significant investment and long-term, high-skilled jobs. Arts and heritage organisation acquires iconic Grade II listed buildings in Grimsby Arts and heritage organisation and charity Our Big Picture has acquired iconic Grade II listed buildings dating from 1781 at 17 to 21 Bethlehem Street, Grimsby as a permanent home. Formally known as Canters Estate Agents and The Gentry hairdressers, the acquisition process has taken nearly a year working closely with the previous owner, key funders and stakeholders. The buildings and yard will be turned into flexible and adaptable creative spaces, enabling Our Big Picture and the wider creative community to engage with more people and expand the range and scope of arts and heritage projects. Paula Denton, CEO of Our Big Picture, said: “We feel really privileged to be the custodian of this building, an exciting future legacy for the arts and culture of the town. “The building will have a studio and different creative spaces but it will very much be a place of exploration of a variety of community-led thematic projects from our local heritage to social issues, finding new and creative collaborations.” Land secured to build new four screen cinema in Gainsborough West Lindsey District Council has taken a huge step forward as it pushes ahead to build Gainsborough’s first multiplex cinema. The authority has officially acquired the land where the former Lindsey Centre was in the Market Place, which is where the four-screen cinema, two retail units, a restaurant, and additional parking will be built. The exciting plans for the town are being realised thanks to the Council’s £18 million Levelling up Programme to create a Thriving Gainsborough. Leader of the Council, Councillor Owen Bierley, said: “This is a huge step forward for our plans to build a ‘Thriving Gainsborough 2024’ and ensure the town reaches its full potential. In doing so this will have an economic impact on the wider district as we attract more people to the area. “It has been a long process, but our team has been working very hard behind the scenes to get where we are and now demolition of the site in preparation for the new build can start.” © stock.adobe.com/ jetcityimage latest news Paula Denton, CEO of Our Big Picture, in front of the old Canters building. 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 12:58 Page 3Visit awayresorts.co.uk or call 03333 634189 Summer breaks from only £183* Tattershall Lakes Cleethorpes Pearl Appletree H o l i d a y o n y o u r y o u r d oor s t e p w i t h t h r e e l o c a t i o n s *Price based on a 2-night break in Superior accommodation at Cleethorpes Pearl in August, correct at time of print. ...for style seekers ...... . . f s ...for adrenaline junkies Tattershall Lakes Country Park, Lincolnshire Retallack Resort & Spa, Cornwall r s ...for little angels Mill Rythe Coastal Village, Hampshire 06-10.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 12:58 Page 4Next >
