O ver the last 5 years or so, the beauty industry has exploded. With the easy accessibility of social media, finding tips and tricks on achieving any look you can conceive of is effortless. Yet, this brings up two issues. Firstly, it is easy to become overwhelmed by all the styles available to choose from, meaning it can be easier to retreat into your comfort zone and get stuck in a rut. Secondly, seeing these trends plastered over every website can make them feel the trendsetter this season. The 90’s is back, and this includes the classic bob style. Reminiscent of all your favourite 90’s actresses, the bob exudes elegance and understated self- confidence. Shorter styles give the beautifully carefree appearance that we all long for in summer, whilst also keeping you wonderfully cool. Yet, the 2022 versions have a twist to bring in that modern edge. Rather than the more austere bob you may be envisioning, the choppy bob is gradually layered from the base to the top layer of hair, creating a gorgeous flow, as well as creating lift. Bobs are a bold look, which some may find daunting. Yet, your hair away from your face can improve confidence over time, as you have nothing to hide behind! As a timeless style, bobs look ready to make a statement this season, you could go for a shorter bob (think Winona Ryder or Courtney Cox circa 1994!) or even a bolder “straight across” cut, which does away with layers making all hairs the same length. With Pantone’s colour of the year being “Very Peri” (described as a dynamic periwinkle blue with a violet-red undertone), you may have seen a mass influx of the range of purples, pinks and blues on the fashion and beauty market. Vivid greens and chartreuse are amongst other popular 2022 colours. The deduction we can make from these choices, is that after two summers of restricted movement, people are ready to experiment and make a statement. Summer is often filled with weddings, garden parties, and plenty of other occasions that present the perfect © stock.adobe.com/ Алина Бузунова statement Making a 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 14:48 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47 HAIR & BEAUTY opportunity to get out of your comfort zone. With the popularity of TV’s Euphoria causing an upsurge in eyeshadow interest, why not incorporate these colours into your occasion makeup for a true glam-up? If you’re not ready to take the plunge into full-glam, you can try an iridescent shade, which looks ethereal dotted in the inner corner of the eye, or gently patted across the eyelid over the top of a light “bone” shade. A more traditional method of incorporating these colours is through your choice of lipstick. For a bolder look, firstly line your lips with a colour like your lipstick shade (to make your lips appear larger, select a lip liner slightly darker than the lipstick) and proceed to apply the lipstick straight from the tube. For a more subtle application, use a lip brush to apply a sweep of colour. For bolder colours, lip liner is always advised to create a clean edge, and gently biting down on a tissue as a final step is recommended to avoid transfers onto your teeth. If you’re feeling truly adventurous with colour, why not try purple in your hair? From pastel lavenders to rich aubergines, the options out there really run the gamut. Semi-permanent, or even aerosol spray options may be worthwhile if you’re unsure about committing to the look. Neither contain any nasties such as ammonia or peroxide and will not change your hair colour permanently. This leaves you free to experiment away without worry of damaging your locks. Semi-permanent dye lasts around 8-10 washes, whereas sprays generally last until the next wash. If you have darker hair, be prepared to use 2-3 bottles of dye to realise the full effects. With the 90’s/ early 2000s being so popular, you could opt for a streak or highlights instead. However, semi- permanent options are not great at covering greys, so if this is a concern for you, permanent dyes would be a better option. Colour blocking has been a huge trend in clothing this year and is also being seen in nail shades. As opposed to the intricate nail art seen in recent years, the trend has reverted to single colour manicures, in bright shades to make a bold statement. Now is the perfect time to try yellows, greens, and blues, all the colours you’ve always been afraid to try, to really make an impact. To add a little more intrigue, and some modern flair, why not try a matte topcoat as opposed to a shiny one? Once again, the 90s is making a comeback here too, with the re-emergence of the French Manicure. Whilst a classic white tip and nude nail will always look timelessly elegant, many are changing up the colours, with a bold colour on the tip, or an ombre effect. This works by taking different shades of the same colour and applying them in streaks to gradually get darker or lighter down the nail. The best way to achieve this effect is to use a sponge to smudge where the colours meet to create a graduated appearance. It may sound cliché, but beauty emanates from natural confidence. The above are ways to help you stand out from the crowd, but you don’t have to go all the way if it will make you self- conscious. Beauty is supposed to be fun, and these trends represent methods of self-expression within the safe confines of being able to remove it if it’s not to your taste. Embrace the warm comfort of the summer months by trying out something new. Ultimately, the theme for 2022 is new beginnings amidst hope for the future. This is embodied within incorporating colours which evoke happiness and embracing the image you always wanted but never had the confidence to try. © stock.adobe.com/Liudmila Dutko 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 14:48 Page 248 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS T he summer months, much like the New Year period, often get us thinking about how to be healthier. With the good weather never guaranteed, and easy access to the Lincolnshire coast for beach days, we all want to be able to enjoy what we do get without worrying about our health or our bodies. With this in mind, let’s look at some of the easier health and fitness trends that have emerged this year. The bonus? These can be followed wherever you are, even if you’re lucky enough to be abroad this summer. The gym is an often-divisive arena. Some love it, some loathe it. If you’re lucky enough to live close to your local gym or feel that exercising around others will increase your motivation, it could be well worth the investment. If you’re happy to sacrifice access to a swimming pool, lower-cost options such as PureGym and The Gym are available from as little as £20 per month. Yet, with Lincolnshire playing host to so many rural communities, it can be extremely difficult to access the gym. This is not even accounting for the fuel costs of just travelling there. If this sounds like you, not to fear! The pandemic provided a huge boost to the already growing online fitness community. Companies such as Peloton (an indoor bicycle subscription service) offer high quality classes and 24/7 fitness support. Given that prices start at around £1000 just for the bike, understandably this may be far more than you’d budgeted for your fitness journey. If you’re looking for a more cost-effective at-home workout, or need to gently build your fitness levels first, then there is a plethora of online video workouts available. YouTube is a fantastic resource, with videos on all-body or specific workouts. Search for routines with low- impact adjustments if you need something a little gentler. Check your community magazine for local fitness clubs run at your community centres. These are often a lower cost option than the gym with the benefit of having a professional oversee your workout. If you want a more tailored experience, many personal trainers and community fitness trainers now offer online subscription packages, which are lower cost than in- person sessions. Amidst all this work to improve your physical health, it’s vital to ensure that your mental wellbeing is kept in check. One of the biggest health trends of this year is the concept of self-care. In terms of trends, this means it is important to do what feels right for you, not just following what’s popular in the hope that you can make it work. Diets and fitness plans are not designed to be one size fits all, so it’s ok if you need to modify something, or abandon it altogether. Sometimes minor adjustments, such as what time of day you eat or workout, can make a huge difference to your mindset and ability to follow the plan. This means understanding that if you’re on a diet or It can be hard to keep focused on fitness as the second half of the year rolls around, but try to assess your progress at the half-year mark and push on until the end. 48-49.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 14:49 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 49 HEALTH & FITNESS © stock.adobe.com/ pxl.store fitness journey that it does not always have to be followed to the letter. Some days will not present the opportunity, and that’s fine. It’s about being kind to yourself, feeling good mentally boosts physical wellbeing and motivation to continue your journey. Boosting wellbeing doesn’t have to be about diet or fitness either. Self-care means different things to everyone. Whether it’s switching off your phone for a few hours and curling up with a good book, indulging in a facemask and a massage, or getting stuck into that housework you’ve been putting off for ages – this could all count as self-care. Essentially, it means taking the time to do something that makes you feel good, purely because it makes you feel good. As briefly discussed above, experts are increasingly suggesting that we see diets as a lifestyle change, rather than a temporary method of attaining a desired goal. In practical terms, this means setting up a diet and fitness plan so that you can see how your day-to-day routine will change as a result. Hopefully, this will instil an easy schedule and good habits in the long run, which means you are more likely to stick to this new way of life, and thus keeping you healthy in the long-term future. If you’re not sure where to begin, try logging it in a diary, or in an app that helps you devise a weekly food and exercise routine. In line with the self-care theme, it is important not to stick too rigidly to dieting rules, as this can increase the likelihood of slip ups. In fact, research suggests that the more rigid the routine, the more prone you are to serious deviations such as binging episodes. To avoid this, choose healthy meal options that are enjoyable to you – if you don’t like salad, don’t force yourself to eat it! If it’s something you couldn’t do or eat forever, you shouldn’t incorporate it as part of your lifestyle change. Accepting that you are allowed a cheat day, or that sometimes you won’t be able to cook a meal from scratch or do that workout you’ve been meaning to do is part of becoming comfortable with this new lifestyle. Moderation and a non-obsessive approach to wellbeing is a major development in the health and fitness community. One of the more positive aspects to arise from the COVID-19 pandemic was making everything accessible online. Whatever your age, ability, or fitness desires, you can easily find workout videos which suit you. The main takeaways from this article should be to follow a journey because you truly believe it will make you a more well- rounded individual. See it as a marathon and not a sprint. Key advice from experts is not to follow a diet or fitness regime that you don’t enjoy, as this makes it much more likely that you’ll falter. Don’t push yourself too far too soon, make it easy to follow, and most of all, be kind to yourself to boost your motivation. 48-49.qxp_Layout 1 15/07/2022 14:49 Page 2Next >
