I’m sure I wouldn’t be the only onewho would find it fascinating!C WalgateSleafordLETTERS10 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYTaxi trialsDear Lincolnshire Today,I wonder if you could raise a debate on whether there is a future for taxi drivers in Lincolnshire after a series of attacks whichhave left them unable to do their jobs. What a world we live in if an honest cabbie has to live in fear of his life every time he orshe goes out to work. Perhaps the government needs to take a look at stricter licensing laws to stop the people who drinkthemselves into oblivion and carry out these horrendous attacks. Us law-abiding citizens rely on taxis to get us home safely. The town is proud to have aproliferation of traditional shops sittingalongside very few national brands and itmakes for a fascinating wander shouldyou find yourself walking its narrow, butneat streets. Far from the identikit highstreets of many towns and cities we havein this country, Louth feels like a breathof fresh air. The town is not just built on one mainstreet, snickets and alleys curl round alarge central retail area that can bring youunexpectedly into a quiet, deserted streetor out again into the throng of shoppers.Among the retailers include anindependent record shop, a real raritythese days, which sells oodles of new andsecond hand vinyl and CDs as well as acheese shop given the seal of approval bythe TV chefs the Hairy Bikers - the sign onthe door proudly proclaims this. The pride that Louth feels for its uniqueofferings are characterised in thecampaign group, Keep Louth Special.Around since 2008, it aims to keep largesupermarket brands out of the town. Thisis not simple NIMBYism at play, the ‘notin my back yard’ brigade taking hold, rather a concerned group of citizens wholove their town and want to protect thelivelihood of one of the town’s only drawsfor visitors. The group successfullycampaigned recently to save the town’scattle market from being sold to a majorsupermarket, a move they said would‘devastate the vitality of the uniqueshopping experience’ the town has. Recently conjecture has abounded overthe apparent plans to build a second cattlemarket on the town’s sprawling industrialestate. This of course means that the cattlemarket located closer to the town would12 A granddayoutPHOTO: WWW.FOTOLINCS.COM11-13:Layout 1 10/8/12 12:38 Page 112 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYLOUTHthen be up for sale, potentially for a large supermarketto take the chance to root. This would be to Louth’sdetriment. Such an unspoilt place deserves to becherished, not only by residents, but those visiting too.Blooming good place to beLouth is one place where the kind of bloomers you getaren’t just from the local bakeries. The town is oftenbedecked in colour thanks to its horticulturalcontributors. At the moment, the Louth TownPartnership is appealing for residents to pick out theirfavourite areas - and their least favourite too - in a bid totry and win the gold in the East Midlands in Bloomcompetition following their entry this year. That’s possiblynot the case for very much longer as articles in the nationalpress and publicity for Louth as the leading “Food Town”, andits short-listing in a poll to be name Britain’s Best MarketTown, all bear witness.Eve and Ranshaw, as the town’s leading independentdepartment store, believe that they play an important role inhighlighting the excellence of the Louth shopping experienceand the long tradition of service. They are sure Adam Eve, whoset up business over 230 years ago, would be proud of his legacy.Moving with the times, the store can now be followed onFacebook where they already have many friends. North Thoresbyhas won in the past and must be hoping to dowell again this year. Civic pride is important asnearby Market Rasen knows. Its bid to be aPortas Pilot town means investment is comingtheir way. What gave that town the success it iscurrently enjoying was an enthusiastic attitudeto getting people taking action. It looks likeLouth is also on its way to this level of pride, which can only be a good thing.Monday night at the movies? One hidden jewel in Louth’s crown that youmay not have come across before is its love forfilm. Having a three-screen independent cinema in a time ofOdeons and mainstream cinemas seemingly taking overeverywhere is rare. Along with Woodhall Spa’s wonderfullykitsch and historic Kinema in the Woods, the LouthPlayhouse shows the latest blockbusters on a regular basis. However one totally unique aspect that makes it special isLouth Film Club. Awarded distinctions in film programming, marketing and publicity, best website and best filmprogramming over the last few years by the BritishFederations of Film Societies, it has a regular programmeshowing every fortnight. Taking in unusual and world cinemaas well as films suggested by its members from time to time, itoffers discounted rates and for a small town, the chance tosee something esoteric and unusual. The club’s upcomingDocumentary Film Festival, running from 17th to 20thSeptember, promises to bring something new to the format, with documentaries showing on subjects as unusual as Morrisdancing, rubbish dumps and the life of a chimpanzee. If thatdoesn’t make Louth special, then what does? 11-13:Layout 1 10/8/12 12:38 Page 314:Layout 1 10/8/12 10:54 Page 115:Layout 1 10/8/12 10:54 Page 116 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYREAL LIFE HOMESLincolnshire Today readers Tom and MaggieHowes invited us to visit their beautiful home,Fenside Lodge - a fabulous dwelling in abeautiful rural location on the edge of thevillage of Timberland, near Woodhall Spa. The property was built around three years ago onthe site of an old farm cottage. The old building wasdemolished and reclaimed bricks were used to create alovely modern home, which is very much in keepingwith its heritage. On arrival, we couldn’t help being wowed by thegravel drive and electric gates, a good sized plot, whichis fully fenced and dog proof, and plenty of parking.Contemporary features with cottage-stylearchitecture, exposed brickwork and oak flooringenhance the appeal, but modern fixtures and fittingsensure that this is very much a 21st century home.Tom and Maggie apparentlybought the house from a localbuilder who had designed andconstructed it for his ownfamily. The couple wererelocating from Spain andspotted Fenside Lodge online. They made the journey to theUK for their first viewing and fellin love with the rural locationand the individuality of FenlandLodge which sits in a spaciousplot of almost an acre.Real life homes are a greatinspiration to those of us looking tocreate a more individual look. On the first floor thereare four bedrooms, the master having anen-suite, while the others share a familybathroom with a rather indulgentJacuzzi bath.Maggie adds, “The house is one of akind. Although it was built only threeyears ago, it has a real farmhouse feel toit. The reclaimed bricks and exposedbrickwork, as well as the interior designof each of the rooms, add to the appealfor us.”The kitchen and the adjoiningconservatory certainly provide the ‘wowfactor’.
