< Previous100 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWHAT’S ONSleaford’s National Centre of Craft and Design andartsNK are holding a festival in October that takesthe idea of seeds bringing things to life. It could wellbe a metaphor for the town considering itsregeneration plans. On our visit to the NCCD, formerly known as The Hub, we meet withartsNK’s Rosie Wells, who tells us about the plans for Zygote, a festivalcelebrating the town’s heritage as well as its future in a storm of dance, sculpture and sound. Taking place on Sunday 20th October, Zygote willtake place from 7pm to 9pm, but a year-long series of workshops andevents in and around the town mean school children, parents andmembers of the community are getting involved. Rosie explains, “A Zygote is the very first stage of life, when two cellsmeet to create new life. The title was chosen because of Sleaford’sinvolvement with the seed industry, and the themes which could bederived from the concept, such as natural growth of plants and people, economic growth for Sleaford and the surrounding area, and culturalgrowth which will benefit its residents.” Volunteers will be making pin-wheel windmills, which will line part ofthe festival route and a team of artists from Carres Grammar schoolcreated the graphic logo. College students have created a promotionalvideo and community volunteers have been making willow ‘pods’ and‘peas’ which go in them.Arts professionals are also appearing at the festival. Names likeAlexandra Hofgartner, a fabulous aerial performer, Robin Rimbaud,Seeds of change100-101:Layout 1 9/8/13 11:27 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY101WHAT’S ONotherwise known as international composer Scanner, kineticartists Laikingland and Peters and many more are making theirpresence known.Highlights of the festival will include Alexandra Hofgartneremerging from an aerial rig to climb silk ropes and perform adance on Eastgate Green by the NCCD. Kinetic sculptures beinglocated in the river Slea and lighting installations will no doubtlook incredible.Rosie says, “As it is in the evening in October, the pyrotechnicswill look particularly fantastic and artsNK staff have trained inaerial work and pyrotechnics so they can teach these skills inLincolnshire and use them in future festivals.”Elsewhere, the Carre Gallery will have animations in itswindow, the Parish Church will have its external roof lit and willhold a silent disco, which means timed performances throughoutthe evening to co-ordinate with the aerial performance.Professional dancers in the church will perform dance moves tomusic they hear through headphones, with speciallycommissioned choreography by artsNK Dance Team LeaderAmy Dalton. Visitors enter to silence and are givenheadphones to hear the music and instructions onthe dance moves. Money’s Yard will host a fire garden, whichincludes fire installations and drawings and theBarge & Bottle Yard will have neon sculpturesin the shop windows and willow peapodsculptures will appear near the bridge, leadingto floating lanterns illuminating the river. We’re convinced it’s going to be prettyspecial, so why not make your way to Sleafordthis October?Highlights of the festival will includeAlexandra Hofgartner emerging from an aerialrig to climb silk ropes and perform a dance onEastgate Green by the NCCD100-101:Layout 1 9/8/13 11:27 Page 2Backtowork102 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYPETS CORNERDog WalkingPuppy Classes121 Training Adult ClassesHouse Singt: 07977 290920 / 01526 321226e: info@muddypawsdogtraining.uk.com w: www.muddypawsdogtraining.uk.comHome VisitsIt could be periods up to at least eight hours and can createstress and guilt for you as the owner, as well as your dog. Don’tpanic, as you can help make that time pass easier for your dog togive you piece of mind! The best thing you can do is start the day with a good walk. The length of the walk will depend on their age, fitness, bodytype, health and the temperature outside. During this walk allowyour dog to trot, run and have a good sniff around either bybeing off lead but only if your dog is able and safe to be so oralternatively put them on a long line. Don’t be afraid to stop half way round and do a bit of training, for example working on eye contact or ‘puppy press-ups’ (not justfor puppies!). This doesn’t mean you get down and do the press-ups while your dog watches intently. Instead, it’s asking your dog tosit, lie down, sit and stand, followed by marking the behaviour andrewarding. This walk is so important as it will help make your dogtired which in turn helps make that time fly by when you are out. Another good tip is putting their food in food dispenser toyslike wobblers or treat-dispensing chew balls. Different toys havevarying difficulties relating to how easy it is to extract the food, soyou will need to pick the best toy for your dog. If your dog is agood chewer, try wetting their dry food, stuffing it in a stuff-ablechew toy and putting it in the freezer. This will help it last longer. Other options are doggie day care centres, however not all dogsare comfortable in this environment, but some really thrive on it.Another popular option is taking on a dog walker who will be ableto offer a variety of walks and times to suit you and your dog.All these tips will help with your dog’s boredom, pent upenergy and loneliness. Thismonth we speak with Dr Stephen Bloy, an expert inthe social history of Grimsby, whose new bookSearching For Walter tells the story of his familyhistory and reveals a connection to one of Britain’sgreatest heroes. What’s your favourite place to visit inLincolnshire?I absolutely love Lincoln and Stamford, my partnerSarah and I visit them regularly. I’ve also recently discovered the Holy TrinityCollegiate Church next to Tattershall Castle, and it was only when I went into itthat I realised quite how big it is. I absolutely love history and we love places likeLincoln and Stamford. The number of times we go to the coast and places like thatyou can count on one hand but we’re always visiting Lincoln and Stamford toenjoy the history. What would you say sums up Lincolnshire people?I don’t think there’s such an obvious identity among Lincolnshire people as thereis with, for example, Yorkshire people. I think Lincolnshire is a really gentle countyand, putting my history hat on, Lincoln and Lincolnshire could have been muchmore influential in national matters had history turned out slightly different.Lincoln was a very important place in Medieval times and Grimsby was the thirdlargest port in the country in the fourteenth century. King John actually instructedthat £80 was delivered to Grimsby to build a castle! So while there isn’t perhaps anobvious identity, it’s certainly a fantastic place.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of Lincolnshire Today – so getin touch with us via Twitter at @lincstoday or search for us onFacebook.
