Talking to manager BillHutchinson, he is confident the food is an accuratemirror to the other facilities at the sprawling hotel. He says, “The food we have on offer is goodEnglish food, we have an extensive bar menu but wealso offer more formal dining in our restaurant too. Wehave a carvery on Sundays which can be taken as athree-course meal in the restaurant or as a one-coursespecial in the bar area. It’s what people expect, familiar, traditional food that tastes great. It’s a real team effort hereand we’re proud of that.”Head chef Helen has been at the North Shore for aroundthirteen years, having joined as a sous chef and developed herskills since. Previously it wasknown as The Granby Inn, but when thecurrent owners took over in 2012, theydecided to follow the lead of locals andgive it the name it’s always informallyhad. As you’d expect from a restaurant insuch a prominent position, the welcomeat the Halfway House is warm – as wecertainly experienced while visitingrecently. The bright open-plan setting ishugely attractive, and a friendlyatmosphere is apparent throughout theevening.Adding to the sparkling atmosphere isthe Rock Grill, the Halfway House’ssignature dining experience. The aim isto give you complete control on howyour meal is cooked, so steaks arepresented on your table on volcanic rocksheated to 440°c. It’s up to you as to howlong you keep it on there, depending onyour taste. Though at first it can appear achallenge, it wasn’t long before we’dmastered it and were able to enjoy ourScottish rump steak exactly as we preferit. As well as looking and sounding prettyexciting, there are other benefits of theRock Grill approach – the steak maintainsall its natural juices, nutrients andflavours. The steak is excellent, too –sourced from local butchers and oftenfrom prime Scottish cattle. There areother options – kangaroo steak, a leanmeat that suits rock cooking perfectly, isoften available, while we accompaniedthe steak with a king prawn skewer, threetasty fresh King Prawns diners can flashon the stone. If you’re not sure about the idea of therock (and bibs and aprons are available ifyou’re nervous), there are many moredelicious options on the menu, all usinglocally sourced produce whereverpossible. My companion, for example, enjoyed the Lamb Rump, roasted withgarlic and rosemary and served oncrushed minted new potatoes with redwine jus and fresh market vegetables –which they thoroughly enjoyed. There’splenty more to choose from, including anumber of vegetarian dishes.Regular specials, light bites during theday and a traditional Sunday lunch menumeans you’re bound to find somethingyou enjoy at the Halfway House – and it’sno surprise that as well as a place to stop,it’s also a hugely popular destination inits own right.Halfway House Bar & Grill is on North Thoresby’s High Street. Some of thiswas thanks to some very good luck. Mostobviously, the weather managed tooblige with glorious sunshine for more orless every event that took place, encouraging people to get out and enjoywhat was on offer.Even better, the engineers ensured thatthe railway line into Cleethorpes, whichsince the start of the year had been cutoff from the wider world thanks to alandslide near Doncaster, was back openby the start of July, just in time for theschool holidays. Appropriately given theresort was celebrating the 150thanniversary of the arrival of the first train, which more or less ensured its status as apopular resort in the first place, thismeant visitors from across Yorkshire andfurther afield could visit as usual withouthaving to negotiate the rail replacementbuses. Since it’s reopened the trainoperating companies are also making upfor the inconvenience by offering specialticket deals. However the visitors got there, theywere rewarded with plenty ofentertainment – all of which illustratedthe community spirit that abounds in theresort. Armed Forces Day wascommemorated with a poignant day ofcelebrations including a spectacularflypast and a huge fireworks display inthe evening, though perhaps the mostappealing aspect of the day was that SeaView Street – which has a pleasingvillage-esque atmosphere about itgenerally – became home to a fortiesfestival with classic vehicles, stalls andsingalongs. Almost all the retailers on theStreet got into the spirit of the occasionby dressing up and taking part in thefestivities – not something you get inyour common or garden High Street. Also bringing the crowds to the resortthis summer was the Carnival – one ofthe resort’s longest-running events. Thatsaid, for a while it wasn’t certain it wouldbe returning this year due to lack offunding, but Youngs, one of the area’sbiggest employers, stepped in to sponsorthe event and the organisers worked flatout to ensure it continues to highlight allthat’s going on in Cleethorpes. Add tothat the Cleethorpes Air Show, where the56 Cleethorpes isFLYING HIGHSince it’sreopened the trainoperating companies arealso making up for theinconvenience byoffering special ticketdealsCommunity is the key for Cleethorpes’recent success055-058:Layout 1 9/8/13 12:46 Page 156 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCLEETHORPESlikes of the Red Arrows and the LancasterBomber took to the skies across theseafront and the organisers have plans toexpand this over the next few years, andyou’ve got a hugely vibrant resort that’swelcoming almost as many people as itdid when the Great British seasideholiday was in its pomp. But Cleethorpes certainly isn’t the kindof place that simply closes its door inSeptember and waits until the sun comesout again. There’s plenty moreentertainment coming up throughout theautumn. We’re most interested in theLincolnshire Food Festival, whichLincolnshire Today is sponsoring, andwhich takes place at Meridian Park on21st and 22nd September. This is the first time the Festival hasbeen held but the organisers have puttogether a tantalising line-up, headed upby TV star Levi Roots, hugely acclaimedFrench chef Franck Pontais and locally-based chef and presenter Nigel Brown. The theme for the festival is ‘Around theWorld and Home Again’, featuring thefreshest and highest quality foodproducers and traders both local andfrom across the UK – with plenty to try aswell.Cleethorpes is certainly a suitablelocation for such an event to be heldbecause it’s becoming renowned as a topculinary destination. It’s been a long timesince the menus in Cleethorpes’restaurants began and ended with fishand chips (though if you want them, there are still plenty of excellent placesthat specialise in that) and you’ll nowfind a host of top quality cafes andrestaurants that reach the higheststandards. If the weather’s pleasant, as ithas been this summer, there’s nothingmore enjoyable than some alfrescodining overlooking the sea, and more orless all of the venues put the accent oninformality. It’snow been acquired in a deal that will see it safeguarded forfuture community ownership.Local businessman Bryan Huxford, who is spearheadingthe project, says, “This has the potential to be very excitingand could create jobs, boost skills and give people acrossNorth East Lincolnshire a venue to really be proud of. Butwe’re not getting ahead of ourselves at this stage becausewe know The Pier will only truly survive and thrive with thesupport of local people. We will be opening consultationsvery soon and hope that lots of local people will choose toget involved in deciding the future of a great regionallandmark.”In the short term, the Pier will be an entertainment venue, though offering a different approach to the nightclubs thathave opened and closed with somewhat bewildering speedin recent years – and in the long term those behind theproject are keen to hear from local people as to what they’dlike to see happen in this famous old venue. It’s no surprise to see the community is the focus of thenew Pier – this year’s special events have illustrated thatCleethorpes is at its best when it’s bringing the resorttogether.PHOTO: COLIN SMALE/WWW.FOTOLINCS.COMArmed Forces Day illustratedthe community spirit that isalways apparent in CleethorpesIt’s nosurprise to see thecommunity is the focus of thenew Pier – this year’s specialevents have illustrated thatCleethorpes is at its bestwhen it’s bringing theresort together. Our mobile, event and outdoor bar company provides bar hire forall kinds of venues and occasions throughout The East Midlands.Whether its a village hall, marquee, Community Centre, conference centre we can do it!The individual needs of each client is very important to us, to givethat personal touch.Contact us: Thebarman.biz, 146 Yarborough Road, Grimsby, DN34 4DLTel:01472 348127Mob:07827920583www.thebarman.bizMapley Foods LtdOur Montréal Whiskyand Canadian MapleSyrup has the perfectblend of Scotch Whiskyand Canadian MapleSyrup. These rich and smokyflavours combinetogether creating anirresistible full bodiedliqueur.www.mapleyfoods.comenquiries@mapleyfoods.comMapley is proving to be very popularwith butchers, restaurants, farmshops and delis.
