BARBELLThe trusty bumper plates and barbellare the mainstay of any CrossFit gym.Expect to become quickly familiar withdeadlifts, jerks, snatches and squatsand, if you’re lucky, even a benchpress. Using a barbell rather than amachine is advantageous in that itworks the whole body, which is greatfor muscle building and strengtheningthe core.RIGAfter the barbell, the rig is probablythe most used piece of equipment inCrossFit workouts. The rig is the termused the describe the climbing frame-like apparatus that is used for pull upsand gymnastics, or as squat racks whenusing the barbell, or even as a target formedicine ball throws.KETTLEBELLMost people have swung a kettlebellbefore, but here you’ll get to use themfor all sorts of exercises. As well askettlebell swings, expect to becomefamiliar with kettlebell snatches, gobletsquats, Turkish get ups and farmerswalks. It’s another great piece of kitwhich will work the posterior chain andwhole body.GYMNAST RINGSThis is possibly the one piece ofequipment most new members want tomaster. Sounds easyenough, right?ROWING MACHINEUsed for intervals, distance efforts andsprints, the rowing machine is never anenjoyable experience unless you happento be 7 foot tall. It’s another great pieceof equipment for conditioning and atrusty alternative to pounding thepavements running all of the time. CLIMBING ROPEIt’s back to your childhood again andthe dreaded climbing rope in the schoolsports hall. It’s used mainly for ropeclimbs and rope hauls, master these andthen it’s time to try to do them legless,i.e. using your arms only.STRONGMAN KITAs well as your standard kit, you’lloften get to challenge yourself with“strongman” style equipment. Expect toencounter tractor tyres, prowlers, sleds,atlas stones, logs and even more ropes.It’s not for the faint hearted, but doesoffer a great way of changing yourtraining up. Here we take alook at some of our favourite recipes for this month.potatoes and sauté until they are starting to take on somecolour. Next add in the red onion and continue to sauté foranother 3-4 minutes or until soft. Remove from the pan witha slotted spoon and put to one side.Pour the eggs into the hot frying pan; add in the broadbeans, potato and onions. Mix together thoroughly.Divide the mixture into 8 then use wet hands to shape each piece into asmall burger. Cut each pepper into 8 wedges and thickly slice the courgettes, place in abowl season add the oil and toss well.Make the yogurt sauce by mixing all the ingredients together with saltand pepper to taste. Transfer to a small bowl.Cook the burgers and vegetables over hot barbecue coals or under a hotgrill for 8-10mins, turning once until the burgers are cooked through, withno sign of pink juices and the vegetables are char grilled.
