ItsLatin name - Muntiacus Reevesi – isderived from John Reeves, an inspectorwith The East India Tea Company in1812. Since then it has become a familiarsight, which is largely attributed to thedeliberate releases and escapes whichquickly established a wild deer populace. This releasing, alongside its ownmovements (and no small measure ofof fallen leaves and splashed withpatches of white fur on its chin, throat, underside and tail. Unlike other UK deer, the Muntjacdoes not have a defined breedingseason, and opts instead for action allyear round. They can even conceive daysafter giving birth. It’s no wonder there’sso many of them! Despite their fondnessfor rutting, the Muntjac is a largelysolitary animal, spending much of itstime either alone or in pairs. They mightwalk alone, but they are terribly territorywith both sexes marking their patch. Allthat alone time must be the secret to along life, as the Muntjac can live up to17 years in the wild. Some have dubbed the Muntjac“Britain’s most dangerous anddestructive deer”, something hard toimagine given its fluttering doe eyes andcute spindly legs. That said, it doespossess an alarming appetite forwoodland plants, as well as a penchantfor wrecking nests and making a mess ofsuburban gardens. But Lincolnshire DeerGroup might have something to aboutthat. The group was founded in 1997with the aim of raising awareness of wilddeer issues such as practical deermanagement advice to woodlandowners and land managers. Co-existence, it would seem, is definitely apossibility. But, as far as longevity goes, theMuntjacs have us beat. So with some 30million years on its side, who are we tothrow a paddy? First introduced to the UK in the early 20th century, the MuntjacDeer is one of China’s most famous exports, alongside its cuisine, herbal medicine and cheap steel. Lincolnshirewildlifehanky-panky) has made the deer a fairlycommon site here in Blighty, andLincolnshire is certainly not immune.Muntjac have been recorded in ourcounty since the seventies, and goes bythe moniker of ‘barking deer’ because ofthe dog-like noises it produces. This canbe heard most commonly in the Autumn, and as August gives way to September, its throaty calls will once again seep intothe soundtrack of the wild.
