Inspiring trends 44-45.qxp_Layout 1 14/08/2019 11:24 Page 1HAIR & BEAUTY Summer sees you moving away from those heavier moisturisers in favour for lighter toners, but with the dip in temperature in autumn’s wake, you’ll need to moisturise, moisturise, moisturise. It’s easy for skin to get dry, tired and flaky this time of year, so it’s important to keep it nourished and hydrated. While we’re on the subject, make sure you’re still drinking enough water. Just because summer has passed us by doesn’t mean that’s any excuse to ditch the aqua. Trust us, your skin, hair and nails will thank you for it. Now that we’ve got the most important advice out of the way, it’s time to move onto our favourite autumn beauty trends and have we come some serious inspo for you. First up, it’s all about lips. Moving away from the glossy wet looks seen all over spring and summer, the trend for matte red lips is here to stay. To really let your lips do the talking, try pairing with polished skin and minimal make-up. Contouring comes and contouring goes and already last season we saw it being moved aside in favour for bronzing. But one thing’s for certain, blush is forever. Feel free to rock blusher in bright red or pink, but this autumn the trend will be on peachy tones that offer a more even and natural look. To get the most out of your blusher, pair it with soft pink lips, but whatever you do, don’t go overboard with that blusher brush. ‘Less is more’ is great advice when it comes to things like seasoning, but for make-up it’s a cardinal rule. Lips? Check. Cheeks? Check. What are we missing? Oh, that’s right, eyes, and there’s plenty of exciting trends to watch out for. Graphic eyes are making a comeback, which will either make you cheer or roll your eyes to high heaven. They’re a great look for the ‘gram, but not worth the hassle for everyday wear. Save it for special occasions or when you want to look especially fabulous on a night out. A look we’re all about though is smoky eyes. From season to season, we’ve seen this perennially popular look evolve from blue, to violet to brown. But this season, it’s back to black. Remember, the key here is smokiness, so avoid laying it on to thick unless you’re trying to rock the Siouxsie Sioux look. Black may not be your jam. If that’s the case, you’ll be happy to hear that neon eyeshadow is in. This pop of colour over the eyes has proved a hit on the catwalk and it’s a really easy look to achieve at home. Try pairing it with nude make-up to devastating effect. As far as lashes are concerned, the focus here is more on the lower lashes. We’re not talking Twiggy’s doe eyes here but combining mascara and falsies for thicker lower lashes. Your eyes are masterpieces, so frame them. Back in our July issue, we highlighted all the subtle ways to bring out the best of your natural beauty and the barely- there make-up trend is still very much in vogue and we are here for it. It’s an easy to achieve look with some concealer, lip balm and just a whisper of mascara. For a deeper dive, check out the July issue. That’s the beauty trends taken care off, but that’s only half your look, right? For hair, things are coming undone. The windswept look is proving popular. So instead of trying to tame those flyaways, you may want to extenuate them with some teasing and finishing spray and sweeping a few strands across your forehead. It’s the natural successor to that deliberate bed head look favourite by guys. It’s all about the long looks lately, especially the centre parting. Whether you’re going curly, wavy or dead straight, the middle parting is where it’s at. For updos, there’s modern topknots, which are a far cry from that terrible pineapple hair inflicted on girls of a certain age. The trick with getting this look is to tie your hair into a high ponytail before twisting it into a bun so that the ends remain loose and messy. Between the two looks are low ponytails which are tied at the nape of the neck or even at the shoulder blades rather than at the back of the head. Long plaits are also popular, if you’re feeling up to it. Accessories make or break a look and more and more often they’re being incorporate into hair styles. We’re talking grips, slides and barrettes. As well as helping to accomplish certain styles, they’ll also add a dash of colour and style for a more fully realised look that’s tailored to your outfit. It’s also great for low maintenance looks, just grab your hair and put in a grip. So why aren’t more of us doing it? wellbeing Walking is cheap and easy and brings a whole host of physical and mental benefits. So why aren’t more of us doing it? Walking for 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 14/08/2019 11:26 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 47 HEALTH & FITNESS A utumn is arguably the most beautiful time of year when the sun-dappled leaves turn from green to shades of brown, orange and burgundy. It’s a wonderful time to be out and about, walking trails and wandering through parks and coastal paths. It does a person good, mind, body and soul, but don’t just take our word for it, there’s the science to back it up. Research shows that people who fit moderate activity like walking into their daily lives burn more energy than those who make weekly visits to the gym. This might be contrary to popular opinion, leading many to discount walking as a way of keeping fit. But walking for thirty minutes or more a day on most days of the week is a proven way of improving or maintaining overall health. For such a simple and intuitive exercise, walking comes with a whole host of physical benefits. This includes increased cardiovascular and pulmonary fitness (that’s heart and lung in layman’s terms); reduced risk of heart disease and stroke; stronger bones and improved balance; increased muscle strength and endurance; reduced body fat and improved management of conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness and diabetes. It isn’t just adults who serve to benefit, but children too. Over twenty per cent of reception age children in Lincolnshire are overweight or obese. But it’s not simply a matter of taking away their smart phones and tablets and sticking them outside. That approach will never work and will likely only drive them back inside on their devices faster than you can say “Facebook”. Instead, parents can try bringing the two together. There are loads of great free or low- cost fitness apps available to download that add an extra dimension to a pursuit that children might otherwise find uninteresting. With the popularity of mobile games such as Pokémon GO and, more recently, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, walks can be gamified to ensure that children can be stimulated whilst also getting all the physical benefits. There’s also the possibility that once they’re in amongst nature, they’re realise it’s much more interesting that whatever’s on a phone screen. For all its many benefits, it’s not always easy to incorporate walking into a busy schedule, but there are several canny ways of getting your steps in. Provided you have a shorter commute to work, you can always ditch your car a few times a week and walk in. If that’s not an option, try using part of your lunch break to go for a wander. You could always arrive earlier and use the extra time to take a walk up and down the street. As walking is good for dealing with stress and anxiety, it will likely put you in a better frame of mind for the workday ahead. Much as we adore autumn here at Lincolnshire Today, there’s no denying that it’s also the herald of darker days. That means you might not always be able to get out and about as often as you like, but there are alternatives. The NHS says that stair climbing burns more calories per minute than jogging and counts towards the recommended 150 minutes of weekly exercise. Research also shows that regularly taking the stairs is good for strong bones, cardiovascular fitness and weight management. So next you’re out shopping, go for the stairs rather than the lift or elevator. Another simple tip is that if you use public transport, get off one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way. As well as getting the physical benefits, it’s also that little bit cheaper. Like those pennies, burnt calories add up. While the science behind the cardinal ten thousand steps a day has been called into question, arming yourself with a pedometer is still a great idea. Most smart phones will come pre-equipped with a pedometer as part of a suit of health apps so there’s not even any extra expense to worry about. They’re worth taken advantage of as seeing your steps build up week by week can provide a powerful motivation. As explored in last month’s issue, being out in nature comes with several proven mental and physical benefits. So much so that a two-hour weekly dose of nature could become part of official health advice alongside getting your five pieces of fruit and veg a day. Definitely worth checking out that issue for a deeper look. There are annual walking festivals that take place across the county turning walking into as much a social occasion as fitness orientated. You can always just get some friends or family members together and see the beautiful sites across our county whether woodland, park or coastal. Just make sure you’ve got some decent walking shoes as a bout of bad blisters can be enough to put you off for life. 46-47.qxp_Layout 1 14/08/2019 11:26 Page 2A warm welcome awaits you at The Lincoln Hotel. That’s why our recipes this month are designed to warm the body from the inside out. September You’ll need: 250g Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference British Gems boiled and thickly sliced 6 medium free range eggs 60g cooked & podded broad beans 1 small red onion finely sliced 1 tbsp chopped fresh dill 1 tbsp chopped fresh mint 30g butter 60g goats cheese log thinly sliced Salt and pepper What to do: Preheat your grill to its hottest setting. Whisk the eggs with a fork, add in the chopped fresh herbs and season with salt and pepper. Heat the butter in a 20cm non-stick frying pan; add in the sliced potatoes and sauté until they are starting to take on some colour. Next add in the red onion and continue to sauté for another 3-4 minutes or until soft. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon and put to one side. Pour the eggs into the hot frying pan; add in the broad beans, potato and onions. Make sure the potatoes, onions and broad beans are spread out evenly. Top with the goats cheese slices and place under the hot grill until golden and puffed on top and just cooked through in the middle. Serve with a dressed green salad.
