Well, it means open spaces and a return toward normality thankfully. With furlough ending and many businesses opening their doors again, and with some having operated safely through lockdown, the economy is coming back to life again, and while there have been talks of a recession (and those would be accurate) it’s worth pointing out that this is a recession caused by purely external circumstances rather than internal problems with the UK’s economy. This is important because it means the rigidity and viability of businesses in the area was not called into question. It’s important however that we do support our local businesses in this trying time. With the Government’s furlough scheme coming to an end, businesses will be relying on their local customers to operate successfully. We no longer live in a world where only the giants are capable of delivering goods, so instead of shopping at Next or ASDA, why not look up local options? Not only will you be helping your local businesses, but you may also receive a more individualistic and higher quality product, especially since mass-produced wear and supermarkets tend to aim for quantity over quality. Some of our restaurants have already been operating takeout services, while others have started to sell DIY kits for making their meals at home – showing incredible innovation in adapting to the unusual conditions. The message moving into September is a simple one. As schools re-open and people move back to work, so, too, is it back to business for many of our local firms. So next time you’re sat at home, bored or shopping online to wile away the time, give a thought for the local businesses you may have visited before lockdown began. Lincolnshire is a safer region now and so long as we all follow the Government guidelines, we’ll be safe going out and shopping once more. © Shutterstock /Syda Productions 09-11.qxp_Layout 1 28/08/2020 14:13 Page 2FINEST OPTICIANS IN LOOKING FOR INDEPENDENT SERVICE AND DESIGNER BRANDS? Originally from the area, the unique property was one the owners had always seen and aspired to, driving past it on numerous occasions: “We thought, ‘if this ever comes on the market, we’ll get it’. Lo and behold, one day we passed it and there was a for sale sign up, so we enquired more and had a look around.” Holding an intriguing past, the Boasting the perfect blend of contemporary living and stunning Victorian features, this landmark property is situated on Riseholme Road, a mere ten-minute walk from Lincoln’s Bailgate. Renovated to property was named ‘Outlands’ when it was first built in 1880. As can be seen by looking at maps found by its present owners, the home was one of the last within the city border. Considered to be on the brink of leaving Lincoln at the time, the house is a piece of history, signalling the extensive expansion of the city. Previously owned by the local Bishop Grosseteste University for a significant length of time, the property has been used for a wide range of purposes, from student accommodation, to storage space for a theatre production company and offices. They noted: “Bishop Grosseteste and Lincoln City Council were very eager for it to go back to a private dwelling, so I think the fact that we were excited to buy it, restore it and live in it ourselves was one of the reasons we were successful when we put a bid forward.” The family’s work on the property has included two significant extensions, completed in 2014, to create a contemporary single-storey 10m x 7m kitchen/diner/lounge and a double garage, utility room, fifth bedroom and en-suite, presenting first-floor accommodation above the garage. While the front of the property remains fairly traditional, there is now a “big surprise element at the back” with the open plan living space. Someone could literally have bought the plot, levelled it and built five or six starter homes if they wanted to.” Stepping into the house on a tour, one is welcomed by the entrance hall with polished concrete floors, underfloor heating and an original ceiling rose. To the left one will find a utility room, while the kitchen, where the owners spend nearly all of their time, can be discovered ahead. The kitchen features polished concrete floors and a large island containing a five-ring gas hob, stainless steel sink with a boiling water tap, integrated dishwasher, and a pop-up socket, above which are two large glass skylights. Wall mounted units meanwhile host multiple larder units, twin ovens, and an integrated fridge/freezer. The kitchen also holds a breakfast bar with space to seat up to four, an area for a large dining 16 Á 12-16.qxp_Layout 1 28/08/2020 15:42 Page 416 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HOMES table and a seating area overlooking private gardens which can be accessed through a sliding aluminium door. Continuing round the house, to the right of the entrance hall is a further hall with original Olde English geometric tiling, off of which is the snug, one of the owner’s favourite rooms due to its ornate ceiling, and the study and dining room which both feature ornate ceiling roses, original coving and picture rails. Travelling upstairs there are four bedrooms, including the master, which benefits from a dressing room, set within the home’s original turret, and an en-suite with a freestanding roll-top bath, corner shower unit, traditional style basin and toilet and wood effect flooring. Two further three-piece shower rooms can also be seen on this floor. Meanwhile an annex/bedroom five, with an en-suite shower room and velux skylights, can be found over the property’s garage. Moving outside, the garden, a perfect size for a family, sees sun most of the day, from first thing in the morning until teatime, and hosts a mixture of decking, patio, and lawn. Wonderfully private, the owners have developed its hedges so the garden presents areas where you are not overlooked. The owners noted that with such a peaceful garden, “it really doesn’t feel like the home is as close as it is to Lincoln’s Bailgate.” The garden is also a haven for nature. The owners added: “Foxes play here, and we get squirrels. We’re also eager to attract birds to the garden so we let the privet hedges grow up and we’ve got feeders out, so we get quite a variety of birds.” Though the family have put their heart and soul into renovating the property, they are now selling. When asked why they said: “We simply don’t need all the space. Our children have all gone so it’s the two of us in a big five-bed Victorian home. It just doesn’t make an awful lot of sense, so we are looking to downsize at this point in time.” The property is being marketed by The New Homes Agent, for £725,000. 12-16.qxp_Layout 1 28/08/2020 15:42 Page 5Project9_Layout 1 01/09/2020 12:00 Page 1With the shorter days on the way and the cold creeping in, we’ll all be spending less time eating out in the garden and more time inside. So now’s a great time to get your kitchen and dining room looking spick, span and stylish. Although you may want to completely redecorate, sometimes the addition of new furniture pieces and accessories can have a transformative effect. It’s also amazing the difference new cutlery and crockery can have. In these cases, it’s not about following what’s popular, but heeding your own sense of style and aesthetic to create a space that you actually want to spend time in.
