LN9 5DX Tel: 01507 525926/522659 of businessmen and local landowners, the 11-mile canal was a successful project, opened for use in 1802. The River Bain was simultaneously deepened and straightened to allow for the passage of 50-ton ships into Horncastle wharves, connecting the town to the River Witham and the Wash. This opened Horncastle up to the wool, grain and coal trades, and to tourists on their way to Boston and Lincoln. The canal trade routes fell into disuse around the advent of the railway in 1855, and finally closed in 1878. But while it was still at the heart of the town’s prosperity, the canal nourished Horncastle with new businesses springing up on streets surrounding the market place, especially St Lawrence Street and Tinkers Lane. And even today, the waterway remains running next to a picturesque walking trail, with the old canal basins as spots to sit back and enjoy the view. In honour of Banks, who took part in Captain James Cook’s first great voyage to Brazil, Tahiti and New Zealand, the Centre also tends a Tribute Garden flowered with many plants catalogued on his voyage, or by gardeners he sponsored in their work. While the library keeps an extensive store of information on Banks for visitors to peruse, the success of Horncastle is now kept in its historic buildings, antique shops and booksellers, a subtle reminder of its bold beginnings and connections to seekers of knowledge. As well as all this fascinating history, there’s also dozens of great shops and boutiques to explore, and plenty of amazing restaurants and pubs to try the local food and drink. If you’ve already visited, why not visit again, and if you’ve never had the pleasure, be sure to make Horncastle your next county stop off. You won’t regret it. 26-31.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 14:53 Page 526-31.qxp_Layout 1 23/08/2022 14:53 Page 632 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY FASHION Saunter into September A transitional month, September is a time to get ready for the upcoming shift to cooler weather.
