We’ve also been invited toa whole host of black tie events over the next fewweeks, I can barely remember the diary looking socrammed! So, let’s not get downhearted that summer isover because it never really began. Let’s get readyfor the months that the celebrated poet John Keatscalled “a season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”.There’s certainly plenty to enjoy in this month’sissue. The main attraction is the results of this year’sLincolnshire Today Dining Awards, where onceagain our critics present their suggestions for thebest places to eat around the county. We also talkto two of Lincolnshire’s medallists from the OlympicGames and if you’ve been suitable inspired to getactive we have lots of inspiration. And, thoughsummer may not even have got started, we’re sorry to remind you the festive seasonis nearly upon us. Don’t worry – we’ve got advice to help you get one step ahead.Good reading, whatever the weather Steve FisherEditorLincolnshireToday@lincstodaylincolnshiretoday.netEditor:Steve FisherJournalists:Steve Williams, Mike Shields,Elis Ballard, Michael Fisher. The shield was among a number ofheirlooms taken to the Flog It! valuation dayin Scunthorpe by a Lincolnshire lady forappraisal by the show’s experts.Auctioneer Colin Young says, “Just reading out the lot number I knew somethingspecial was going to happen. At the fall of the hammer the room erupted intoapplause. Very few broad shields come on the market and each is viewed as anindividual work of art and their merits considered by connoisseurs on that basis.”The final bid of £30,000 was made by the Sydney Museum of Primitive Art onthe telephone. The museum has previously acquired Aboriginal art from GoldingYoung & Mawer’s auction house.Colin Young says, “If you want to find out how the owner reacted to the surprisediscovery on the valuation day and that all-exciting conclusion in The LincolnAuction Rooms, you’ll have to wait until the new series of Flog It! to be shown laterthis year.”Also under the hammer this month...A collection of antiques from the estate of the late Arnold ‘Bill’ Beresford ofLincoln were featured in the August sale at the Lincolnauction rooms. Mr Beresford, who lived offDoddington Road, passed away earlier this year anditems from his large collection went under theauctioneer’s hammer. The collection, which has been described as ‘eclecticbut quality’ included a bronze and ivory figure ofSapho seated on a rock on a green marble base byCharles Eloy Bailly which sold for £1300, well over its£300 to £500 estimate. Meanwhile, a George IIIlongcase clock in a mahogany case by Thomas Iles ofLondon made £1400.Splash out on a marina homeFor a distinctive contemporary home in a special location take a look atBurton Waters near Lincoln where the last two detached properties are onthe market.Architecturally, these two individual homes have elements of BurtonWaters’ established style with windows, balconies and roof terracesorientated to make the most of glorious views and south west aspects. The four-bedroom Cavendish is for sale at £424,950 and the five-bedroomGrosvenor is priced at £499,950, both with double garage.Located in prime plots within the gated residential area of Burton Waters bordering the Fossdyke Navigation Canal, purchasers will enjoyall this inland marina has to offer - acres of water, footpaths, landscaping, wildlife areas, a waterfront bistro and restaurant and a health club.
