< Previous90 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYACTIVE LINCOLNSHIREHaving never even fired a air riflebefore, I can confidently say thatprior to this visit, my experiencewith firearms was precisely zero, unless water pistols count? So it was withtrepidation and a sense of responsibility Itook up the challenge of clay shooting. After an initial chat with insightful coachEd Smith about shot sizes and what waslegal - we wouldn’t be using deathly slugsfor example - it was time to get measuredup for which way I would be shooting. Asimple eye test confirmed I was an anomalywhen it came to my eyeline. While I amright-handed, I was throwing Ed’sjudgement with my eyesight, withapparently my left eye being dominant andso in the interests of a good shot, I had touse my left hand for my triggerfinger. What followed felt very naturalEd explained how to stand safelyand then taught me a method ofhitting the targets, whereby youfollow the target with your eyes, before pulling slightly ahead ofthe clay before pulling the trigger. My first few shots were too soonor far too late but following a fewinitial blips, I was pleased withthe hit rate. The recoil on theguns is powerful but not so bad that youwill fall over. As the sport is popular withstag and hen parties, Ed has to sometimesprise the gun from over-eager brides as tosave them from the embarrassment of abruised shoulder on their wedding day!Apparently there is a natural point whereyou will start to tire, though with practice, muscle memory becomes entrenched andlonger shoots can take place. After a cuppa in Ed’s small lodge on therange, we returned, but with a new methodof targeting. Sometimes referred to as the‘smoke trail’ I preferred Ed’s name for it -‘Boom, Belly, Bang!’ which meant followingthe target from its far side, maintaining afocus on it’s centre, then pulling aheadbefore firing. This was a much easiermethod, but as they say, horses for courses, one method which is someone’s never-failapproach could be the worst for a differentkind of shooter. It’s immensely satisfying tosee the clay explode and surprisingly easyto get used to. Although I’d never want to shoot ananimal in the wild - I’m far too soft onthem - I feel as though I could bag a fewrabbits or pheasants given the chance. Donature a favour, though and stick to theclay ones. It’s more satisfying to hear thecrack of a clay, isn’t it? I’m just on myway to Blackpool to do my show onthe North Pier and what I like about itis that the kids and nan and granddadare all together and laughing at thesame things. It’s the same withpanto – I love hearing the kidslaughing at the same things astheir parents, and these daysthat’s a bit of a rarity. It’s greatthat children canappreciate the wholespectrum ofentertainment – one minute you’rerecoiling in horror at the Beast andthen the next minute they’re watchingsome downright lunacy! How long have you been doingpantomime? This is about my 35th panto. It’s asheer joy. In this day and age therearen’t that many opportunities forshared family comedy. I don’t meankids’ entertainment, I mean stuff thatall the generations will enjoy. That’sone of the good things about comingback to Newark because I had such agreat time last year. Why have you decided to returnto Newark? It’s not something I’ve ever donebefore, I’ve never gone back thefollowing year. But I had such a goodtime in Newark last year and it was sosuccessful. I’ll never forget that on afew occasions we got standingovations on the curtain. It’s a fantasticfeeling when you put everything intoit and, two hours later, people areshowing you how much theyappreciate that. What can audiences expect? There’s be one or two familiar itemsFamily fun at its finestOperation ostrichBernie’s tormentor Mike Maloney is now a regular contributor to Lincolnshire Today, and we asked him if he rememberedBernie’s avian exploits, He tells us, “You would never get away with stunts like that today because of health and safety. Professor Crackpot issuch a great part for a comic, becausebeing an inventor, he can do anything hewants – and it doesn’t have to be part ofthe plot!We hear you fly microlights in yourspare time. Have you ever takenyour ostrich up there so they cansee the world?Yes, I’ve been flying for about thirtyyears now. It’s funny you should mentionthat but when I first started flying, aphotographer called Mike Maloneyconvinced me to get me and the ostrich inthe aeroplane and got me to fly it. I wasabove Lowestoft at about five hundred feet, and I was thinking to myself, “I’m fivehundred feet above Lowestoft, I’m sitting on aduck and I can’t fly!” (Ed: See Mike’s response below!)Bernie stars in Beauty and the Beast at theNewark Palace Theatre from 12th December to6th January and to book tickets, call 01636655755 or via www.palacenewark.com.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY95WHAT’S ON - PANTOSScunthorpe getsAladdinAnnie Fanny is heading back to Scunthorpe this December as festivepantomime Aladdin comes to The Plowright Theatre. The show will run from 8th December to 6th January, featuring a totalof 54 shows.
