Most treatments areperformed by fully qualified surgeon Mr P I Sadiq MBBS FRCS.One of the latest treatments offered by Mr Sadiq is what's known as the "vampire" facelift. Hetells us, "A small amount of blood is taken from the patient and we separate the red blood cellsfrom the platelet, which contains all the stimulating factors. It's then injected into the face orneck, where it reduces fine lines and wrinkles, makes the skin tighter and improves texture."Looks also offers other non-surgical treatments, including the eight point facelift, where dermalfillers are put in eight different places to improve volume and texture all over your face.To find out more, and to book a free consultation, call Looks Cosmetic on01472 315877or 07800 978037, or visit www.lookscosmeticclinc.co.uk.72 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHAIR & BEAUTYduplicate the look of the celebrities atpremieres and launches without the armyof stylists behind the scenes.Lincolnshire’s hair and beauty specialistscan help with styling tips and new tricksand treatments that are quick to applybut provide long-lasting style. The glamour of the golden age ofHollywood is proving inspirational. It’s allabout the volume and across Lincolnshirehair stylists can add oomph to otherwiseflat and lifeless locks. Condition is vitalwhen it comes to longer hair, andregardless of what hair texture you have, the fashion is to keep the feel, mood andtexture of tresses super natural, with apolish and softness to the overall look.Effortless and carefree? Well, maybe, but for some there’s that awkwardinbetween stage before your hair reachesthe right length for you to do anythingnew with it. Yet hair extensions are nowso flexible and of such a high quality thatvirtually nobody will be able to spotwhere your real hair ends. Hairextensions also give you the chance toadd a bit of colour to the duller months.Opt for some pastel tones and colourflashes via extensions and you won’tsuffer the damage and dryness associatedwith dyeing. There’s no need to worry about long-term damage to your hair, as some nowcome on a fine wire that you just slip onto your head and, using a comb, you pullsome of your own hair over the top tohide the wire. There’s no glue or clips, soyou can easily make use of them just forone special night, and then either use thelook as inspiration or write it off as a badjob and try something else.If you like them so much you want togo for something a bit more permanent, the county’s specialists can point you inthe right direction – without causingexcessive stress and strain on your locks. These days extensions can be sealedaround the natural hair, and the keratinused is never mixed or rolled into the hairitself. This means when you come toremove them your hair isn’t left thin orweak due to the sometimes harshremoval efforts. If you are growing your hair out acolour change can help make the processfar less painful – providing a bit ofinterest if you want to hold off a radicalchop for a bit. We all know the downsideof dying hair too frequently but there’snow a huge number of high qualitymethods that make it easier and saferthan ever. If you’re looking for a radicalchange, however, you should consult aprofessional – fruitless attempts to getthat shade you’re after will simply lead toa deterioration in its condition and makeit harder to keep the tone in the hair.Changing from brunette to blonde isan obvious moment where a stylist willbe hugely important. If you’re going for aradical change like that, you may want togo for a short crop too, as you’ll get astriking crisp colour.Away from your hair you could addsome sparkle to the autumn withpermanent make-up. It’s not technically“permanent” because it only lasts abouttwelve to eighteen months, but itprovides consistent shine, and the aim isnot to leave you with the same look formonths but add some subtle definition. The most familiar aspects of permanentmake-up are probably the eyebrowtreatments, which are great for peoplewith patchy or non-existent eyebrows.Eyeliner procedures will give the eyesmore definition, and are very popularwith people who don’t particularlyapplying makeup. Meanwhile, havingyour lips redefined and blushed willbalance out uneven lips and give anatural tint – perfect for those whostruggle to prevent lipstick bleeding. These subtle changes will make sureyou’re always looking bright, withoutlimiting your other options. There are other changes you can maketo give yourself a new look, such as teethwhitening, which can provide a subtlechange to your appearance that willcertainly be noticed, but it might not beobvious to others as to what exactlyyou’ve changed – perfect if you don’twant to give away your secrets andhelping give you extra confidence.071-073:Layout 1 15/9/14 10:00 Page 2Lincolnshire’s hair and beautyspecialists can help with stylingtips and new tricks and treatmentsthat are quick to apply but providelong-lasting style .PHOTO COURTESY KEN PICTON SALON071-073:Layout 1 15/9/14 10:00 Page 3HEALTH & WELLBEINGSo what is CrossFit?If you’re into fitness, you’ll know about CrossFit. If you want toget fit, drop body fat or want a washboard stomach, then youshould get to know CrossFit. Haven’t heard of it? You soon will.CrossFit is a broad, general, inclusive fitness program applicableto everyone. All workouts are based on functional movementswhich are the core movements of life, found everywhere andbuilt naturally into our DNA. By employing a constantly variedapproach to training, these functional movements at maximumintensity, lead to dramatic gains in fitness. Our workouts are never the same from one day to the next soeveryday is a new challenge and there is no danger of gettingbored or stuck in a rut.CrossFit gyms are the polar opposite to traditional gyms whereyour membership grants you use of the equipment, but offers noguarantee of results. CrossFit is very different in that it is muchmore hands-on, every session is coached and the health, fitnessand wellbeing of members is of paramount importance. Ourworkouts are suitable for everyone from the total beginner to theelite athlete as they can be adapted and scaled to meet the needsof the individual. The community spirit during the workouts is unrivaled intraditional gyms, making CrossFit unique. We all train together, regardless of ability and we all cheer each other home. Anotherbig difference between ourselves and traditional gyms is that wedon’t do contracts, if you’re not getting results or fancy a changethen there’s no danger of finding yourself tied into a lengthycontract with no way out.In gyms and health clubs throughout the world the typicalworkout consists of isolation movements and extended aerobicsessions. The fitness community from trainers to the magazineshas the exercising public believing that lateral raises, curls, legextensions, sit-ups and the like combined with 20-40 minute stintson the exercise bike or treadmill are going to lead to some kind ofgreat fitness. If your current routine looks somewhat like what we’vedescribed as typical of the fitness magazines and gyms don’tdespair, there are a lot of people in the same boat. However, anyexercise is better than none and this should give you a foundationto build on. If you haven’t set foot in a gym in years, or ever forthat matter, then CrossFit is equally suitable to you.Think you’re fit? THINK AGAIN!Introducing our latest fitness expert Adam Jones, Coach andCo-Owner of CrossFit Witham located in Lincoln City Centre. LEAVE YOUR EGO AT THE DOORCrossFit is humbling to everyone, aim forprogressionnot perfection. They willtypically measure their results almost exclusively bythe amount of weight they lose or if they’re reallyclued up, by their reduction in body fat.90% of our new members are in the same boatand tell us that their motivations are to lose weightand “tone up”. However, our approach is verydifferent with much more emphasis placed on yourperformance and improvements in various fitnessdomains rather than encouraging an atmospherewhere members become slaves to the scales. Usuallya few months down the line things change for ourmembers as their motivations become getting fitter, faster and stronger. They change from wanting tolose an extra kg to being able to lift an extra kg andstop counting calories and start counting thenumber of pull ups they can do! Needless to say,the toning up takes care of itself! It is very difficult to convey the essence of “What isCrossFit” without seeing it for yourselves so we activelyencourage anyone to come for a look round or to try afree taster session by visiting the gym Monday toFriday, or contact the team via Facebook, email or bycalling 07725 124535 for more information.SUPPORT OTHER MEMBERSCrossFit is community driven, when itrains we all get wet, we may train asindividuals but we workout as acommunityA stimulatingapproachHave you thought of having acupuncture, but decidedit’s not for you? Pam Coulton of the Burton WatersClinic explains why acupuncture is far more thansimply an alternative.Acupuncture has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine, but froma contemporary Western perspective, it’s now viewed as an approachthat stimulates the nervous system, while also activating the body’sself-regulating systems, and encouraging the process of naturalhealing. Because of this holistic approach, acupuncture can be used asan incredibly successful treatment for a whole range of medical andpsychological issues. For example, acupuncture can be used to treatmany issues from acne to vertigo, from infertility to substance abuse. One question often asked by individuals new to acupuncture is‘how safe is it’? As the British Acupuncture Council points out, twosurveys conducted independently of each other concluded the risk ofa serious adverse reaction to acupuncture is less than 1 in 10,000 – farless than many orthodox medical treatments. 66,000 treatments werereviewed altogether, with only a handful of minor side effectsrecorded. Some people also are concerned about how ‘alternative’acupuncture is, but NICE, the organisation who decides theappropriateness of NHS-delivered medical treatment, are currentlycampaigning to have acupuncture provided by the NHS for back painspecifically. If your concern is that you may receive treatment from someoneunqualified, it’s essential to choose an acupuncturist registered with aprofessional body. British Acupuncture Council members haveextensive undergraduate degree level training in acupuncture andbiomedical sciences and are bound by strict codes of ethics, and safepractice and professional conduct.Book your initial consultation with qualified and experiencedpractitioners, who will answer all of your questions, and guide youthrough a treatment process where your body works to help heal itself.BURTON WATERS CLINICDo you suffer from...Foot Pain?Knee Pain?Back Pain?Orthotic intervention helps to reduce pain, slow the progression of a deformity or prevent injury.Orthoc treatment is not just for professional athletes or people with complex medical condionsBook your assessment with a qualified and experienced Orthost.6 & 7 The Landings | Burton Waters | Lincoln | LN1 2TUCALL 01522 520 362 /07946 598 133info@quaysorthotics.co.uk | www.quaysorthotics.co.uk074-075:Layout 1 15/9/14 08:39 Page 276 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHIt’s a sad fact that almost all of us willknow someone who has been diagnosedwith breast cancer. In fact the latestfigures show that one in eight women inthe UK will develop breast cancer in theirlifetime – with some 55,000 people beingdiagnosed every year. That’s why BreastCancer Awareness Month has becomeincreasingly important and throughoutOctober people will be thinking pink andhighlighting what we can all do to ensurepeople know how and where they canget help. There is some good news – and that’sthe fact that 85% of people now survivebreast cancer beyond five years and that’svery much due to the research madeavailable by the public’s support. Indeedexperts believe that half of the cases ofbreast cancer diagnosed each year could,in principle, be prevented if the causeswere better understood. This year marks the tenth anniversaryof the Breakthrough Generations Survey, which is the world’s largest and mostcomprehensive study of its kind lookinginto the root causes of breast cancer, following more than 113,000 womenover forty years. Funded byBreakthrough Breast Cancer andconducted at The Institute of CancerResearch, the project has broughttogether some of the brightest minds inbreast cancer research from around theworld and, in a relatively short period oftime, has begun to help to unravel someof the biggest questions about how wecan prevent the disease. The aim, eventually, is to be able topredict who will get breast cancer, andwhat caused it. Chris Askew, CEO ofBreakthrough Breast Cancer, says, “We’renow entering a new era of breast cancerresearch, one where, as well as focusingon treating and managing breast canceronce it’s developed, we’re setting oursights on preventing it altogether. Wepredict that by 2050, we will be able toprevent 30% of breast cancers and withinfive years, we’ll be able to accuratelypredict a women’s lifetime risk of breastcancer, based on her genetic, lifestyleand environmental profile.”In the meantime, Breast CancerAwareness Month plays a vital role inencouraging people to make regularchecks. There are many examples ofwomen don’t check their breasts eitherbecause they don’t know what signs andsymptoms they are looking for, or theysimply forget to do it. The campaignaims to ensure women touch theirbreasts regularly and see if they can feelanything unusual, look for changes inshape or texture and check anythingHelp isat handOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month andthroughout the county people are working hard to stop itsspread and help those who have been diagnosed“We predict that by 2050, we will be able to prevent 30%of breast cancers and within five years, we’ll be able toaccurately predict a women’s lifetime risk of breast cancer”076-078:Layout 1 15/9/14 10:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY77We have a welcoming and friendly atmosphere where you canshop for lingerie, sleepwear, & swimwear in comfort.
