Fortunately, Jocasta’sevents are a far cry from suchexperiences. The message seemsto be that people are staying put because they can’t afford to move, hence the increased interest in home improvement.Yet there could be another, happier reason. Could it be that, perhaps, peoplearen’t moving house because they actually like where they’re living at themoment? It may come as a surprise to those who see a house purely as aninvestment opportunity, but a recent survey has revealed that most of us, whosimply want somewhere nice to live, are perfectly happy with where we’rebased. The survey was carried out to see what effect the economic slump has had onhomeowners. It found that 58% of those surveyed wanted to stay in theircurrent home because they like the area, compared to just 7% who said thatthey wanted to move but the credit crunch had stymied that.Ken Pike of Architect Your Home, who carried out the survey, says, “With thecredit crunch constantly in the headlines, it’s easy to assume that a new trendfor renovating rather than relocating is down to these added financial pressures.Yet it’s refreshing to see that homeowners are deciding to revamp their homesdue to their love of their neighbourhood rather than a negative economy.”There’s another reason, too – Danny Hanlon of Granite Transformations says,“People are getting very little return on money that’s sitting in the bank, so wefind they’re deciding to enjoy it by doing up their homes. Transforming whereyou live avoids all that ‘dead money’ and adds value to the property.”A fresh lookEven if you’re staying put, though, you can still bring about a newenvironment by revitalising a room or even the whole house. Ken Pike says,“With the help of expert advice, home owners are starting to realise the18 ÁIt’s not only important to consider how an extension looks from the outside if you’re planningone, but also how it works with the rest of the house. Often you’ll have to justify your choicesto gain planning permission too, so make sure it’s sympathetic to the environment. AA16-18_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:09 Page 2Open plan living is ideal for entertaining, but it’s best to consult anarchitect before you take a sledgehammer to the wallsWhen you’re renovating your home, there’s no hard and fast rules as towhich type of design will suit an older property but generally the simpler, the better, Don’t forget that traditional materials can still create acontemporary look – why not use the contemporary equivalent of thoseused in the original building?18 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMESpotential of their property. This could beanything from creating an additionalbedroom or increasing living space for agrowing family, to altering the layout toaccommodate changing needs or evencreating a home office in the garden. Asever, good design is crucial to the endresult as well as the practical elements ofliving in this space.”If you’re planning to revamp yourhome, you may well think that hiring anarchitect, especially if you’re only goingto change a small part of the property, isan expensive luxury. Yet this does nothave to be the case – homeowners canhire an architect and use their services asmuch or as little as required, often as apay-as-you-go service. One great way in which architects canhelp is if you’re planning an extension.Ken Pike says, “It’s vital to not onlyconsider how an extension looks from theoutside but equally how it works with theinternal floor plan. Every property isdifferent so the involvement of anarchitect is of upmost importance to getnot only the design, but also thefunctionality right.“Sympathetic and considered plansdrawn up by an architect also greatlyincrease your chances of obtaining theplanning permission you need. If youmeet resistance, the key is to take on asmuch professional advice as possible tobuild a case based on answering thequestions, point by point.”Come dine with usFor some reason, many homeownerswould seem to be happier inviting gueststo inspect their knicker drawer than theirkitchen. Seemingly we’re never really thathappy with our kitchens, as they’re neveras clean or as stylish as maybe we’d like, especially given the hammering we oftengive the equipment and work surfaces. However, many people are looking torenovate their kitchens to install some moreattractive and hard-wearing units andworktops. Some of the latest units have theadded advantage of being able to beinstalled over existing worktops – a fiendishway of avoiding the mess and expenseyou’d normally get from a makeover. What’s certainly true is that, inspired bycelebrity chefs and TV shows, people areopting to create their own masterpiecesat home rather than going out to eat.Changing the layout of your kitchen andreplacing those old cupboards creates agreat venue for dinner parties. With encouraging news that the worstof the recession may be behind us, it’slikely the property market will perk upshortly. Yet for many of us we’ve alreadyfound the perfect home, which with a bitof TLC will continue to surprise.Photos courtesy Architect Your Home16-18_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:09 Page 319_Layout 1 14/09/2015 10:24 Page 1Next >
