< Previous10 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHOctober is Breast CancerAwareness Month and there areloads of ways in which you canjoin in and raise money andattentionIt’s a sad fact that breast cancer is still the most commonly-diagnosed cancer in the UK, and each year fifty thousandwomen will be diagnosed with the disease. That’s why theword “awareness” in the name of the event is all-important –the earlier breast cancer is found the better the chances ofbeating it. It’s vital that women make regular checks, butmany women don’t check their breasts either because theydon’t know what signs and symptoms they are looking for, orthey simply forget to do it.Hence the first aim of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is toremind women that knowing their own bodies could savetheir lives. They just need to follow TLC – Touch, Look,Check. Touch your breasts and ask if you can feel anythingunusual, look for changes in shape or texture and checkanything unusual with your doctor.Throughout October, Breakthrough is urging women totext SIGNS to 70500 to get their free credit-card sized TLCguide. Not only does the TLC guide detail the key signs andsymptoms of breast cancer, it also includes information aboutwhat to do if you notice anything unusual. Its handy sizemeans women can keep it somewhere useful, such as in ahandbag or on the nightstand, that will act as a helpful© shutterstock/ESB ProfessionalBeatingBreast Cancer10-13_Layout 1 18/09/2017 12:51 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY11BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTHPAUL SPARKES CAR SALESLocated at Vision Garage Services LtdPaul Sparkes Car Sales,Vision Garage Services Ltd, Louth Road,New Waltham, Grimsby, Lincolnshire DN36 4RT Tel: 01472 823040 • www.paulsparkescarsales.co.ukQUALITY USED CARSWe are a well establishedvehicle sales, servicingand parts supplycompany situated on theoutskirts of Grimsbyreminder to check their breasts.Knowing the signs and symptoms isimportant, and can lead to people self-diagnosing breast cancer early enough todo something about it. A Breast CancerCare survey found, however, that a third ofwomen aren’t regularly checking, and that20% say it is because they don’t knowhow to check their breasts or what to lookfor. The most well-known symptom is alump, but it is very possible to not showor find one at all. Other symptoms includea change in size or shape of one or bothbreasts, redness or a rash around thenipple, discharge that comes from thenipple without squeezing, a change intexture, or even one or more nipplesbecoming inverted. Although no one likes the idea ofbeing forced to check for such things, and some may be nervous or afraid as towhat they might find, it is still importantto do so – for the small amount ofdiscomfort it might cause could save months, or evenyears, of emotional pain later. It’s also important to remember that breast cancer isn’t onesingle disease, as there are several different types. Not all ofthem show as a lump, and not all breast lumps are breastcancer. The biggest risk factor is increasing age, with 80% ofbreast cancers occurring in women over the age of fifty, butwhat’s perhaps not so well known is that less than 10% ofbreast cancer runs in families – so having someone in yourfamily with breast cancer doesn’t necessarily mean that youhave an increased risk yourself.Whether you’re going pink this month, or sponsoringsomeone who is, you can be sure that the cash raised will goto a fabulous cause.A helping handThose who have undergone treatment for breast cancernow have a greater range of wigs and bras to choose fromthan ever before. Certainly many lingerie collections nowoffer a varied selection of post-mastectomy bras – producedto the same high standards as the rest of their collection andjust as attractive to look at and wear, but made to fit. Many of Lincolnshire’s lingerie retailers have undergonespecialist training in fitting mastectomy bras, and like allwomen there’s an obvious benefit in self-esteem that comesfrom wearing a properly fitted bra. They can arrange specialfitting sessions to measure you up and make a host ofvaluable suggestions over what’s best for you. He bought the home back in 2009 and applying his ownpassion, retained many period details whilst introducingmodern additions like an Orangery, a glass staircase, whichbrings a contemporary twist to the property and its ownrainwater harvesting system. Entering through the iron gates, remote controlled ofcourse, and the sound of the gravel drive under the tyres ofthe car, this house is quite spectacular. And that feeling doesn’t wane as we enter the spaciousentrance hallway, with its original tiled floor and sweepingstaircase. Indeed, it’d be easy to make the assumption thatthe interior design has been kept traditional, but howwrong you’d be. As we venture through the rooms downstairs, traditionalfeatures are very much in play as can be seen from thedouble aspect drawing room with its fireplace and bay withdouble doors opening onto the garden. Likewise, the study with fireplace complete with fittedbookshelves and cupboards below have a traditionalhomely feel, but it’s as we enter the sitting room, whichhas double doors through to a double height inner hallwith glass and stainless steel staircase leading to amezzanine floor, that Kenneth’s flair for interior designbegins to reveal itself. This is also true of the dining room which has doubledoors opening onto a terrace and a further step down intoa lavish newly fitted kitchen, also with a contemporary18 ÁT16-19_Layout 1 18/09/2017 12:56 Page 218 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMEStwist and, like the dining room, this too opens onto theterrace overlooking the river Ludd. Off the kitchen is alsothe aforementioned Orangery with bi-fold doors, superbgarden views and a log burner for those cooler nights. The mezzanine leads to a laundry room and first floortriple aspect master bedroom complete with hand paintedwalls featuring butterflies and birds and a dressing roomwith mahogany doors purchased from the Fine Art Societyin Bond Street London, is an exquisite touch. The bathroom is another impressively appointed roomwith a free standing bath taking centre stage and a largewalk in shower.Even the guest bedroom with its en-suite bathroom hascome under scrutiny and has to be seen to be believed. Then there’s a second mezzanine level with threefurther bedrooms one of which has its own en-suiteshower and the others sharing a family bathroom. The views outside, to the stepped gardens are a perfectcomplement to the property with its wonderfully keptlawns, flower beds and a paved terrace designed to take fulladvantage of the river. The path leads along the edge ofthe garden dotted with mature trees, herbaceous borders, fountain, reflection pond and even a thatched gazebo. There’s a fern and white garden and formal vegetableparterre as well as a bridge beckoning the visitor overcrystal clear waters below. But it’s not all about aesthetics, before landscaping thegarden, a rainwater harvesting system was fitted, usingrecycled water from the house to feed the garden and beused for toilet flushing, keeping water usage to a minimum.Elsewhere there are solar panels for the hot water systemand secondary glazing to help keep heating bills to aminimum. This is certainly a home that’s been thought out in everyway possible. It’s simply stunning but, having built hisdream home, and thoroughly enjoyed that journey, theowner is now planning his next adventure and has put thishouse on the market at £1,250,000 with Savills Lincoln.16-19_Layout 1 18/09/2017 12:56 Page 3Aviation Art Work byStunning aviation art work available in a wide variety of sizes and finishes.visit our online shopairpowerart.co.ukCanvas PrintsPostersMetal PrintsFramed PrintsAcrylicsMugs+moreLINCOLNSHIRETODAY19 Fireplaces – Fires – Stoves Gas - Electric – Multifuel - Wood-burning Burning Sensation (Grimsby) Ltd Armstrong Street, Grimsby.
