< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHAIR & BEAUTYrends come and go but one thing that’s certainabout autumnal beauty trends is the mix of earthycolours with flirtier, more playful shades. That’s exactlywhat we’re seeing when it comes to make-up with one ofour favourite new trends coming right off of the cat-walk.Dubbed ‘paintbox brights’ this one is similar to the strip ofneon over the eyes we’ve all been going crazy for lately.Where this differs is with a more carefully appliedapproach. It’s eyeshadow, but not as we know it. Turning our attention to just below the eye and we’reseeing a growing trend for under eye liner. While it was allabout making a statement with wild geometric patterns onthe top lid, now things are going south and your make-upwill look better for it. Want to mix things up without goingcrazy? Then this one’s for you. Don’t forget about your mascara, though, as it’s comeback in a big way. The thicker the better. Think Twiggy andher doe-eyes. But this isn’t a throw back look, so to keepthings looing fresh and modern, pair heavy lashes withglowing skin and a little lip balm. Focussing just on lips now and it’s all about gettingthose sexy red shades. Red wine is big right now, especially paired with light earthy coloured eye shadow –sometimes called the red wine and cork look. You mighthave heard about berry lips lately. It’s tipped to be one ofthe biggest looks of the year and searches for berrycoloured lipsticks are through the roof. Don’t get leftbehind on this one. Glitter, oh glitter, will you ever go away? Not likely, if thelatest fashion shows are to be believed. These darling littlesparkles are everywhere, from your favourite Instagraminfluencers to the catwalk. If you want to stay on-trend,make sure you arm yourself with glitter and apply to youreyelids, lips, cheeks, forehead and hair. Just noteverywhere at once. A lot goes a long way. For nails, we’re seeing a departure from the bright, striking shades of spring and summer in favour of mattepaints or nude shades. When it comes to colour, it’s allabout doing a lot with a little, so that means colouredcuticles or pink tips. It’s a great playful look that won’t lookout of place at work. At the other end of the spectrum, there’s embellished and statement nails, which doesn’tshow any sign of going away. These are bold looks, meantto make a statement or earn as many likes on Insta as youcan. What about hair, we hear you cry. Don’t worry, we’ve gotyou covered. Blow-dried styles are back and better thanever. It’s all about rocking those glossy high maintenancestyles. To really stay on trend, use a middle parting. If that’snot your thing, or you want something with less effort, there’s still up-dos. Only it’s worth adding some accessorieslike bands and beads. You could even go one step furtherand use feathers and jewels. Style is only ever a guide andwhat matters is what you like and how it makes you feel. ColourgaloreThis is the time of year that you’ll probably be gravitating towards burgundy and browncolour palettes, but there’s no reason not to embrace colour as our style guru explains. Little did sheknow that in 2018 her boy bears wouldtransform into “Boobie Bears”: anoriginal and genius method of raisingawareness for breast cancer. So, what are Boobie Bears? Well,Boobie Bears are travelling teddy bearsthat Scarlet gives to friends, family andcolleagues and places out in publicspaces like shops and hotels with amessage of awareness and instructions. This begins in Scarlet’s home inWinterton, Lincolnshire, from which thebears then traverse the world fromperson to person, getting dropped offand picked up over and over, with thetemporary adopter taking a snap of thebear and posting the picture, along withinformation of when and where the bearwas found, to the ‘Scarlet’s LittleOrphans’ Facebook page. The idea for the Boobie Bears aroseafter Scarlet discovered, in February2018, that she had Paget’s disease of thenipple - a rare condition associated withbreast cancer. Scarlet said: “I had Paget’sDisease of the nipple, it wasn’t a lump.So as awareness goes, anything differentthat shouldn’t be there, you should getchecked out.” Paget’s disease, whichdoes not show up on a mammogram orultrasound, causes eczema-like changesto the nipple and areola, and usually actsas a sign of breast cancer in the tissuebehind the nipple. Between only 1% and4% of women with breast cancer havePaget’s disease of the nipple. Scarlet hada nipple and breast tissue removed, underwent reconstructive surgery, threeweeks of daily radiotherapy, and nowhappily reports that she has had the allclear. She expressed her deepest andmost sincere thanks to the surgeons andthe staff of the Pink Rose Suite inThe globetrottingBoobie BearsAn ingenious method of raising awareness for breast cancer, Boobie Bearsnow travel the world from person to person to make sure we keepchecking ourselves for signs of the disease.56-57.qxp_Layout 1 18/09/2018 10:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY57BREAST CANCER AWARENESSGrimsby for the amazing care they gaveher – and for saving her life – as well asthe Macmillan Cancer Trust for all theirsupport. On her diagnosis Scarlet said: “Theonly reason I found the Paget’s disease isbecause of cancer awareness on TV andeverywhere around me.” This is whyScarlet wants people to understand howimportant raising awareness efforts reallyis, as without it she wouldn’t have knownshe had Paget’s disease. A desire to raiseawareness and to turn her negative into apositive became the inspiration behindthe Boobie Bears. Scarlet said: “I wantedto do it this way - raise awareness withthe bears so it wouldn’t cost anyoneanything. Everyone is asked left and rightfor financial donations, but that is notwhat this is about, it is not about raisingmoney, it’s about awareness. All I ask isthat if anyone can find any small bears, that they send them to me.”Scarlet began sending out her BoobieBears in April, and so far over 400 bearshave gone into the world! The bears havealready travelled a great distance, turningup all over the globe, and in the mostunlikely places: from Australia to Mexico toVietnam, and even at a bear sanctuary.Recently a bear ran away to the circuswhere, after a girl took a bear she found toa show, a circus performer kept the bear!A bear called Mrs Muggles took a tripacross America to numerous states, andanother bear named Donnie, that Scarletrecently left at Doncaster Train Station ona Saturday was picked up and in New YorkCity by the following Monday!Scarlet said that knows she will not seeall 400 of her bears again, but around halfdo turn up on her dedicated Facebookpage – which is where she keeps track ofthem, creating photo albums. She said: “Ikeep up with every bear. Each bear hasan album of photos, so if you have had abear and are following it you can seewhere the bear has been!”The bears have already begun to makea difference, with people reaching out toScarlet and thanking her, stating that thebears made them go get checked forbreast cancer. When asked what thefuture holds for her Boobie Bears, Scarletsaid: “I just want to do this for as long asI can find the bears to give out. Though,it would be great to have some famouspeople take pictures with them to helpraise awareness. Ultimately for me if thebears save one life that will do.” So, takea look around, and keep your eyespeeled when out and about – you neverknow where you might find a BoobieBear, and if you do have any small bearsto donate, Scarlet asks you to send themher way, she said: “You can even postthem through my letter box, I often seethem on my doormat in a morning!”For more information, Scarlet can becontacted through her Facebookpage: www.facebook.com/scarletslittleorphans56-57.qxp_Layout 1 18/09/2018 10:56 Page 258 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHEALTH & FITNESSOur sympathies have been with the more activelyinclined of our readers these last few months. At first thesunshine seemed like a gift from the god’s, only for us tofind it was too damn hot to do much of anything. Now,with the heatwave seemingly abated, the autumnal chillis setting in and the darker evenings will swiftly follow. From it being to hot to enjoy exercise outside, to thetemperature dropping, what’s a person to do?Of course, chilly winds and rain won’t stop determinedrunners or cyclists, but for someone just looking to stayin shape, it can all be a bit daunting. Fortunately, there’splenty of exercise options available from the comfort ofthe indoors. The first is the gym. Once upon a time, the gymconjured images of sweaty barely dressed men pumpingiron and making everyone else feel awkward. But timeshave changed, and gyms are now more cosmopolitanand welcoming than ever before. What makes the gymsuch a great choice is the diversity of workouts available,so whether you want to gain muscle mass, strengthenyour inner core or just build up fitness and staminalevels, the gym is the place to be. Best of all, gymsessions can be worked around work and othercommitments and, being as you’re in a dedicated fitnessspace, you’re more likely to keep it up. Next up is group-led fitness sessions, such as jazzercize, boxercise or the ubiquitous Zumba. By being part of agroup, you’ll immediately feel encouraged and part of acommunity, which can be powerful motivators indeed. It’sa departure from the often-solitary nature of the gym andcan be a great way to spend time with friends andrelatives. Or you can go on your own and end upmeeting some great new friends. Most towns and villageshave a variety of different session to pick from, so whynot give one a go?Then there’s exercising from home. While this is by nomeans a bad idea, it is perhaps one of the hardest. Homemay be where the heart is, but it’s also where the TV andbiscuit tin is. To help circumvent these many distractions,we’d suggest having a set space such as a spare room, conservatory or converted loft. This is a good option forpeople who live in more rural parts of the county, orothers who might feel insecure and self-consciousexercising around other people. There’s no shame inthat. The important thing is that you are keeping fit. While we’d never advise our readers to shun the greatoutdoors (Lincolnshire is a stunning county, after all), butwhen it comes to exercise, sometimes the elementsconspire against us. Luckily, there’s gyms, spas and evenour own homes to take advantage of. Thegreatindoors With the temperature dropping, keeping exercise up can be difficult, butthere’s plenty of great ways to keep fit inside. 58-59.qxp_Layout 1 18/09/2018 10:57 Page 1© Shutterstock / Billion Photos 58-59.qxp_Layout 1 18/09/2018 10:57 Page 2Next >
