< PreviousAs surely as the seasons change, so too must your skincare regime. Moving from summer and into autumn requires a serious switch-up in your daily beauty routine. autumn 40-41.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 41 HAIR & BEAUTY Y ou might not know it by name, but chances are you’ll have experienced the dreaded ‘autumn skin’ at least once in your life. After putting so much effort in over summer, the temperature drops, the wind picks up and there’s just not as much sun, so your skin is left looking rough, dry, drab and dehydrated. Fortunately, there’s some easy switches and self- care tips to ensure you’ll look got beautiful, healthy and hydrated all through autumn. In summer, we’re all about doing away with a heavy moisturising in favour of a toner, but now’s the time to switch back. Adding a rich moisturiser to your routine is a great way for skin to adjust to the changing season and will help form a protective barrier against the cold and wind. Exfoliating at least twice a week is absolutely critical to stop skin from becoming dull and dehydrated. It increases cellular regeneration and removes dead skin so moisturisers and serums can be more easily absorbed. Try opting for products with natural exfoliants such as sugar or apricot seed powder. They’ve become much easier to find on shelves since the microbead ban, so you shouldn’t have a hard time tracking a good one down. It’s also worth introducing an oil-based scrub to your routine. This miracle product polishes and hydrates skin all at once, ensuring skin looks great without drying out. Ensuring skin doesn’t dry out is a constant battle this time of year, so moisturising is absolutely non-negotiable. No ifs, no buts, just find yourself a decent moisturiser that works for you and apply it every morning. You can also find a suitable night cream to use before getting your beauty sleep. Moisturising should also be applied to your lips to stop them from drying out and cracking. For the best results try a natural non-petroleum balm – that means it’s time to end that love affair with Vaseline. For a simple tip for luscious lips, lightly buff them with your toothbrush after you’ve cleaned your teeth. This essentially exfoliates the skin and, when paired with a balm, with keep you looking kissable. But let’s not go forgetting about the rest of your skin now. After all, dry skin doesn’t just affect your face. Body lotions are best applied just after bathing when the skin is still slightly damp. Just make it a normal part of your beauty regime and it will quickly become habit. Not only will this crucial step help keep skin hydrated, it’ll also ensure softness and ease the sting of any razor burns you might have. Of course, if you prefer not to shave, you can always use coconut or argan oil to keep body hair looking beautiful, soft and healthy. That’s your face and body taken care of, but it can be easy to forget about your hands. Make sure you’ve always got a decent hand cream within arm’s reach. Trust us, you’ll be needing it. Hand cream alone isn’t always enough, especially when it comes to cuticles. Autumn can leave your cuticles looking anything other than cute, so it might be worth investing in cuticle oil. That goes for double if you’re planning on getting a manicure anytime soon. It’s easy to forget about sun protection this time of year, what with the overcast skies and regular rainfall, but the sun’s rays can still affect your skin whatever the weather. Okay, so you’re not likely to get burnt this time of year – an Indian summer notwithstanding – but UVAs are still present and can lead to the premature ageing of skin. Don’t fret, just make sure your moisturiser comes with a high UVA protection. For some extra help in hydrating skin, try a weekly sheet mask. You could also go all out and opt for a professional facial. There’s plenty of great salons and spas all across Lincolnshire to choose from. In the home, however, it might be worth thinking about a humidifier. They work best if they’re running as soon as you put the heating on. We all want a warm snuggly house in autumn, but central heating can dry out skin. With a humidifier, you get the best of both worlds. You should also be hydrating from within and that means drinking plenty of fluids. For the best results, you should also be eating foods rich in fatty acids, such as avocadoes, nuts, oily fish and seeds. With this helpful guide, you’ll look stunning all through the autumn. © Shutterstock/Nadya Korobkova 40-41.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:08 Page 242 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS © Shutterstock/Martin Novak THE PERFECT EXCUSE It’s time to shake up your workout routine, find a new fitness goal, and use autumn as an excuse to get into shape. 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:10 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 43 HEALTH & FITNESS A utumn is something of a double-edged sword. The upside is that the crisp misty air is invigorating, and nature is often at its most beautiful just before it withers before winter’s grip. The downside is that it’s bloody cold outside and dark more often than not. Whatever your workout routine had been in the preceding season just isn’t suited to the cooler shorter days. But rather than upending everything, a few simple swaps and changes can have a big impact. First and foremost, it’s important to understand your goals. In spring and summer, your fitness goal might be orientated around weight loss and achieving the so-called “beach body”. But how many how us are squeezing into Speedos and bikinis when it’s barely ten degrees outside? Unless it’s an indoor pool, only thrill-seekers and the most tenacious swimmers will be seen in swimwear on the beach this time of year. Therefore, you’ll want to find a new fitness goal. You might think that keeping fit is its own goal and, while that’s fair, it does miss out a crucial part of sticking with it – motivation. Motivation is an oft-fickle thing. One moment you can be fired up with a steely determination to turn your entire life around… then the motivation fades as swiftly as smoke in a breeze. No one said it was going to be easy and often the first hurdle – i.e. getting up off the sofa, getting outside, that first press up – is always the most difficult. There’s a number of ways to tackle the challenge, including surrounding yourself with support from friends and family. Just don’t try and shame yourself into working out. That’s not a sustainable approach and will only leave you feeling miserable. New fitness goals can include anything from having more energy, sleeping better at night, to looking good ahead of the festive season – Christmas is closer than you think! With motivation aplenty and a new fitness goal in sight, it’s time to move on to the actual exercise itself. If running is your thing, then don’t let the weather put you off, just bear in mind that you’ll be met by wind and rain more often than not. Other than that, it’s just important to remember scheduling. The days are shorter and so if you’re wanting a daytime jog, it’s better to wake up earlier and get out before breakfast. If that’s not an option, there’s nothing wrong with going after dark, just make sure you’re dressed appropriately and stay safe – that means using reflective materials. You might see cars coming, but that doesn’t mean they’ve seen you. The same goes for cycling. Many of us use the excuse of the New Year to try and get fit, a strategy that’s almost always doomed to fail. So don’t make a big deal of it and just start now. Use the invigorating autumn instead of a long dismal January to get you started. That could mean joining a gym or leisure centre or taking the initiative at home. Let’s be honest here, exercise makes you feel amazing, but most of us would rather be curled up in front of the telly. Well, there’s a way that you can have your cake and eat it, so to speak. Keep your favourite Netflix show on in the background while you work out, whether that’s with weights, an exercise bike or a cross trainer. With a smartphone or tablet and wireless headphones, you can enjoy your best-loved boxset wherever you like getting your exercise fix. Fitness, however, is only one part of the battle, the other being diet. Remember how autumn is a double-edged sword? Yeah, that’s also true when it comes to food. The cold and dark will make you want to dive into carb-heavy comfort foods – we’re looking at you mac and cheese, shepherd’s pie and spaghetti bolognaise. At the same time, autumn offers a glut of amazing fruits and vegetables. There’s apples and blackberries, of course, but there’s also butternut squash, kale, leeks, pumpkins, spinach, turnips, cauliflowers, Brussels sprouts, cabbages and on and on the tasty list goes. Not only are these foods delicious, but they’re packed full of the good stuff. Supplement your fitness routine with plenty of seasonal fruit and vegetables and you’ll look and feel great in no time. By the time it comes to the New Year, you’ll have already achieved your fitness aims. 42-43.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:10 Page 244 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH Each October, Breast Cancer Now, the UK’s largest breast cancer research charity, rallies its many supporters to raise money through campaigning and events and wearing pink in solidarity. Its ambition is that by 2050, everyone who develops breast cancer will live, an aim we can all get behind. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with one in seven women developing breast cancer in their lifetime. One person is diagnosed every ten minutes and this Breast Cancer Awareness Month, around 5,000 people will be diagnosed. However, survival rates are improving all the time and have doubled in the past forty years in the UK. Almost nine in ten women now survive breast cancer for five years or more. It’s also estimated that 600,000 people are alive in the UK after a diagnosis of breast cancer, a figure that’s predicted to rise to 840,000 in 2020. There are three main risk factors to developing breast cancer, the biggest is being a woman. Over 99% of new cases of breast cancer are in women, though men can also develop breast cancer. The second biggest risk factor is getting older with more than 80% of breast cancers occurring in women over the age of fifty. The third is a significant family history, but only around 5% of people diagnosed with breast cancer have inherited a faulty BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene – genes that have been found to impact a person’s chances of developing breast cancer. But it’s important to understand that any woman can develop breast cancer, regardless of age or family history, so it’s important to understand the signs and symptoms, as early detection can lead to THINK pink October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign bringing together thousands of organisations and individuals to highlight the importance of breast cancer awareness, education and research. 47 Á a quicker diagnosis. However, a survey from cancer support charity, Breast Cancer Care, found that a third of women aren’t regularly checking their breasts, while a fifth say it’s because they don’t know how. It doesn’t help that people wrongly assume they only need to look out for lumps, but other less- known symptoms include a nipple becoming inverted or a change in skin texture. See our helpful box-out for more details. Just as there are certain risk factors to a person developing breast cancer, there are also several lifestyle changes that can reduce a person’s risk. Limiting alcohol, not smoking, getting exercise and eating well should all be pretty obvious, but there are other less well-known ways to reduce your risk. One is to breast feed. Studies have shown that women who breastfeed are statistically less likely to develop breast cancer than those who don’t – though the reasons why aren’t yet fully understood. It’s posited that it could be because women don’t ovulate as regularly when breast-feeding and 44-47.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:40 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 45 Check your breasts! Everyone’s breasts are different, so look and feel your breasts to know what’s normal for you. It’s important to check them regularly, so make a habit of checking in the bath or shower, when getting dressed or when applying body lotion. It’s also important to check all parts of the breast, the armpits and up to the collar bone. Tell a doctor as soon as possible if you notice a change. Although 90% of all lumps aren’t cancerous, don’t hesitate to book an appointment to see your GP. © Shutterstock/vectorfusionart Comforts Avenue, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire DN15 6PN Tel: 01724 280 082 J. Limiting the dose and duration of hormone therapy can also lower a person’s risk. For some women, a mastectomy is the best course of action. This is a surgery to remove the breast used to treat cancer, but it can also be used to reduce the chances of developing breast cancer in the first place. In 2013, actress Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy after doctors told her she had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer. She therefore “decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much as I could”. Women can elect to have breast reconstruction either during the mastectomy operation itself or at a later date. During this procedure, the original breast shape is recreated using either implants or tissue from elsewhere in the body. An alternative is to use breast prosthesis, which are artificial breasts worn inside the bra. But in 2018, these boy bears would transform into ‘Boobie Bears’ and a unique and ingenious method of raising awareness for breast cancer was born. Since then, the idea has grown and grown and there are now nearly 3,000 unique Boobie Bears out in the world and, as Scarlet tells us there, there’s “lots more ready to go out on adventures”. The only trouble is that with so many different bears, it’s getting harder and harder to name them all. The adorable bears themselves are generously gifted by local people, and the donations are constantly coming in. Most of these donations are from children who ask Scarlet to help send their bears off on adventures so the kids can follow their travels. But it’s not only kids who are getting involved, but businesses and organisations too. Help The Mental Health Charity shop in Scunthorpe has donated over 400 bears now and continue to support the scheme. As well as bears, ribbon is also being regularly donated, which is needed to tie the information card to each bear. It’s important to bear in mind that the Boobie Bears are meant to raise awareness rather than money, so they are sent out for free on their adventures. Therefore, the cards that accompany each bear now carry the signs to look out for when checking your breasts (which you can also see in our Breast Cancer Awareness Month feature). Some of the bears have also gone on to become Boobie Buddies and are keeping chemo patients company while they undergo treatment and attend hospital appointments. Scarlet tells us that she still receives messages to say the Boobie Bears have prompted a self-check and saved lives by finding the cancer early. It’s been a busy summer in all for Scarlet and the scheme, having attended several Macmillan coffee mornings and breast cancer care events. Some of the bears have even visited the wonders of the world, turning up at the Great Wall of China, the Colosseum in Rome, Christ the Redeemer in Brazil and the pyramids. Those loveable little bears really do get around, appearing in cockpits with pilots, trains and cruise ships. They’ve sunbathed in the Caribbean, jumped out of planes in a skydive, seen the beautiful scenery of South Africa, Australia and many States of America. Wherever they turn up, the bears have been spreading awareness as they are passed on from person to place. One lucky bear has even been on tour in the UK and now over forty pop stars have been photographed with Ronnette the Bobbie Bear including Jason Donovan, Tony Hadley, Chesney Hawks and Status Quo. Balloon the Boobie Bear, meanwhile, has been photographed with Guy Martin, Eddie the Eagle, Nick Knowles, Sean Ryder and Sir Chris Hoy. Beige the Boobie Bear was spotted with the Emmerdale cast while Red 1 the Boobie Bear was in good company with our very own Red Arrows. You can keep track of each Boobie Bears adventures on Facebook (@boobiebears) where they each have their own album. And if you’d like to donate your own cuddly toy, drop the team a line on Facebook for full details. You might even save someone’s life. Spreading awareness, one Boobie Bear at a time Boobie Bears are a cute and clever way of raising vital awareness for breast cancer, with almost 3,000 bears now out around the world. 48.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2019 14:10 Page 1Deliciously Deliciously Lincolnshire Gold Awarded for outstanding quality and service by award WWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NET Deliciously Deliciously Lincolnshire Platinum Awarded for outstanding quality and service by award WWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NET DELICIOUSLYIt’s October again and that can only mean the return of Lincolnshire Today’s highly anticipated Dining Awards.
