The trouble is it can be difficult to achieve. Sometimes you just end up with your nose running and looking flushed rather than glowing. Fortunately, it’s easy to fake. Although using subtle blush to get that rosy glow is popular enough all year round – and has been especially popular over the last few years – but it’s tipped as a major trend this season. If you want to achieve this look at home, just add some extra blush along your cheekbones and blend it out towards your temples. It’s as simple as that. Another major trend is adding an unexpected touch of colour, specifically around the eye. Although dramatic styles and over-the-top eyes are still very much a catwalk darling – and Instagram favourite – we’re talking about something simpler but, in many ways, more effective. Just try swapping your bog-standard black eyeliner for blue to add a pop of colour and brighten your eyes. It’s amazing the difference such a simple swap can make but trust us, you’ll be returning to this little beauty hack time and time again. Of course, if you want to go for something a bit more audacious, you go right ahead girls and guys. Add those sequins, sparkles and glitter. But for something a little more elegant, try a putting a different spin on the faithful cat- eyes. Like smoky-eyes, cat-eyes never go out of style, but with a little update they can become oh so more effective. Add some length in the corners, about an inch or so, to seriously frame your eyes. The trick here is to keep the rest of your make-up simple so it doesn’t compete. But if smoky-eyes are your one and only, try softening them just a touch, or adding a little shimmer to the corners with gold or silver shadow to make it more of a daytime look. Where lashes are concerned, longer is better. Although the gram is still awash with crazy styles, we’re talking about some natural extenuation here, let’s not go overboard now. To get more length out of your go-to mascara, try wiggling the wand from roots to tips, fanning lashes out towards the temple. Not only will your lashes look longer, but you’ll also get a lovely fluttery effect. We’re delighted to see that natural-looking brows are still very much in style. At one end of the spectrum, there’s leaving brows alone to grow out in all their beautiful glory. But whenever you hear this term, most of the time it’s referring to brows that are plucked around the edges and combed to make them look fuller and bigger. So brush up your brows and fill in any gaps with a brow pencil using small feathery strokes. But what about lips, were hear you cry. It’s all about going big, bold and red this season. No doubt, you immediately imagine the brightest, garish red you can. No, no, no. That’s not what we’re talking about at all, it’s much more sophisticated. Try adding a rich burgundy lipstick to your beauty regime. To get the best results, pair with a fresh skin look and your usual mascara. For a truly autumnal look, go for a luxe oxblood hue with hints of brown. To get an opaque look, just apply it directly to lips, or you can get a softer finish by dabbing it on your finger and tapping into the lips. Whatever shade of red you opt for, the important thing to bear in mind is to prep your lips with a liner to keep the pigment from feathering. It adds time to your regime, but it’s always time well spend and well worth the effort. So now you have plenty of advice and inspiration for getting your autumn make-up look sorted. You’re welcome. There’s no denying that autumn is here, and that means it’s time to update your make-up. But don’t worry, Lincolnshire Today is here with all the latest tips and trends. 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:28 Page 238 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH AND FITNESS © Shutterstock /gorillaimages The new season may stimulate a desire to curl up with a cuppa and snacks, but it is not time to hibernate. autumn An active and healthy 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:30 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 39 HEALTH AND FITNESS A new season, much like the new year, presents a chance to reinvent and recommit to your health and fitness plan. Autumn is an easy time to enter a lethargic slump, lose motivation and stay under a blanket with snacks, and it is thus the time to set out a plan to stay active and healthy. Inactivity slows down circulation, the metabolism, and weakens the immune system. It is also important to remember how exercise can impact mental health, stimulating endorphins, aka natural mood boosters, which can help those experiencing seasonal affective disorder, for example. Get outside While the season is often a time in which outdoor exercise becomes less appealing, with cooler and wetter weather, shorter days and longer nights on the horizon, autumn is actually a prime time to take advantage of outdoor workouts. With excessive heat, humidity, sunburn, and profuse sweating gone, exercise becomes more comfortable, the risk of major dehydration reduced, and not yet in winter, we sit ahead of the temperature feeling “too cold”. Plus, the air just seems to be fresher. A key reason many of us feel tired in autumn and through winter is because we are not getting enough sunlight and fresh air. Though the sun may not be out every day, we should still ensure to get outside where possible. Walking is the easiest way to exercise outdoors and add movement to your day, and autumn is a splendid time for it, presenting beautiful shifting colours - burnt orange, yellow, golden browns and burgundy shades - which are sure to attract you into nature. A low impact exercise, walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, stroke, and some cancers. A quick brisk walk when you get up in the morning is a good place to start, which you may turn into a jog, then run. Lincolnshire is perfect for a crisp walk through crunchy leaves, with a wealth of trails, country and nature parks, woods, and routes by lakes and canals. All you need is good walking or running shoes and clothing suitable to the weather - think breathable, water repellent and layers - to keep you protected, warm and dry. A waterproof jacket is a must, and if you are out in the dark, ensure to wear reflective gear to keep visible and safe. If you want to step it up a notch in the cooler season, which benefits from less bugs, try hiking, and enjoy stunning views. As you travel up an incline heart rate increases, legs get a great workout and calories are well burned. Muscles are strengthened by climbing, glutes, quads, calves, hamstrings, and the core are worked too, and cardio endurance is increased. Alternatively, why not look out for open air classes offering activities like Pilates, yoga and HIIT, or take advantage of the Government’s new enthusiasm for cycling. Lockdown saw many embrace their allotted outdoor time, and this enthusiasm should not be lost in the new season, during which the health and wellbeing benefits will remain. If the weather is particularly dire and you just cannot face the idea of exercise outside, there are fortunately now more indoor options. Gyms have of course reopened alongside classes of small sizes, while the pandemic has seen online classes and apps to use at home boom. Maintaining motivation A simple way to overcome the avoidance of exercise is working out earlier in the day. This will also leave plenty of free downtime in the evening to unwind and suits those who like to run in the light. Other benefits of morning activity include enhanced productivity, a boosted metabolism, mood, and better sleep. One should also think about how you will feel when the activity is done, rather than the effort to start it, and reward yourself to keep incentivised. A rainy run for instance could be rewarded with hot chocolate and a bubble bath. Signing up to a fitness challenge is useful motivation too, or setting goals with smaller incremental targets to kickstart your workouts. This will also help you monitor progress. Eating for health Ahead of winter, autumn hosts a plethora of nutritious, vitamin rich produce that can boost health and immunity. Alongside exercise then, it’s time to organise a good diet. Foods rich in vitamin C and bioflavonoids (e.g.: dark berries like blackberries, dark leafy greens such as kale, and orange vegetables like carrots) are recommended as well as those with Zinc, which can be found in pumpkin seeds, nuts and whole grains, and warming spices such as turmeric, ginger and cinnamon. Turmeric, for example, has been used to battle inflammation and has been shown to inhibit the spread of some viruses and prevent infection. The nutritional value of autumn seasonal foods is vast. Pumpkin, perhaps the symbol of October, provides carotenoids that fight heart disease and cancer, vitamin E and C, B vitamins, fibre, iron, calcium, magnesium, and potassium amongst others. Meanwhile apples contain an antioxidant lowering bad cholesterol, broccoli contains vitamin C and glucosinolates which fight against oxidative stress, sweet potatoes are high in vitamin A and a good source of vitamin B6, potassium and magnesium, and cranberries are high in vitamin C and other antioxidants linked to reducing chronic disease risk and improved circulation. There is a wide variety of others. Autumn is the time to introduce warming and nourishing plates like soups, casseroles, stews, curries to bolster the immune and digestive system and reduce the sugary foods and alcohol consumed, which are associated with a weaker immune system response. Further, it is important to combat the season’s drier air by staying hydrated. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:31 Page 2Next >
