This is a surgery to remove the breast used to treat cancer, but it can also be used to reduce the chances of developing breast cancer in the first place. In 2013, actress Angelina Jolie underwent a double mastectomy after doctors told her she had an 87% risk of developing breast cancer. She therefore “decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk as much as I could”. Women can elect to have breast reconstruction either during the mastectomy operation itself or at a later date. During this procedure, the original breast shape is recreated using either implants or tissue from elsewhere in the body. Breast cancer will affect us all directly or indirectly at some point in our lives, whether that’s developing it first-hand, or watching a friend or family member go through it. It’s therefore up to all of us to campaign and help, and there’s many ways of getting involved. Events such as Race for Life, held by Cancer Research UK in partnership with Tesco, help raise money for research into all 200 types of cancer, with many women electing to raise for breast cancer. Over the past 20 years, more than eight million people have taken part in the Race for Life, raising over £547 million to fund the charity’s life-saving work. There are also coffee mornings, bake sales and sponsored events. There are events taking place all the time all over the country, though, unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has meant many have been postponed or cancelled. It can be literally whatever you want, be that a sponsored head shave, a sporting challenge, or a world record attempt. With online platforms like JustGiving, it’s never been easier and you’re safe in the knowledge that the money goes straight to the charity. Of course, you can also just make a donation yourself. To find out more about getting involved and to donate, visit www.wearitpink.org/ about/breast-cancer-awareness-month. As a wealth of new electric cars enter the market, fully electric SUVs have arisen as a clear focus for brands, offering an alternative to their high emission brothers. Let’s dive into some of the cars piquing interest. Audi e-tron Sportback Audi’s second fully electric, five-door SUV, the new e-tron Sportback SUV- coupé follows the original e-tron SUV, with a sloping roofline the key visual distinction. While reducing rear headroom by 20mm, the shape gives the sleeker car a better drag coefficient, boosting its range by six miles. The car has entered the UK as a 55 quattro all- wheel drive with a 95kWh battery, peak electrical output of 300kW and range capability of up to 241 miles, while creating no local emissions and holding a recharge time of thirty minutes to reach 80% capacity at direct current fast charge stations. The vehicle comes with new adaptive Matrix LED headlights, offering the most precise headlight direction, Valcona leather heated front Sport seats, a top speed of 124mph, and reaches 62mph in 6.6 seconds. Two versions of the e-tron Sportback have been made available. The S line trim is the foundation specification, meaning the 21-inch five- arm turbine-design alloy wheels and a full body-colour finish for the wheel arches and sills come as standard alongside sport air suspension. The limited Edition One, in Plasma blue, adds features including Audi’s camera-based, aerodynamic-drag-reducing virtual exterior mirrors, aluminium-look body detailing and 21-inch alloy wheels in a ten-spoke rotor design. To enhance efficiency, in most driving situations the Audi e-tron Sportback relies on its rear electric motor, but when driver demand exceeds its ability to supply the front unit is instantly activated. This also happens predictively when traction breaks in poor conditions or when sensors detect understeer or oversteer. Furthermore, the car employs sophisticated engineering to recuperate energy and recharge the battery by deploying its electric motors as generators. This occurs when lifting off the accelerator and coasting, or when applying brakes. The car gains up to 30% of its driving range through energy recuperation. It is additionally worth mentioning the e-tron Sportback’s infotainment features, including the Virtual Cockpit, the touchscreen MMI Touch system with dual monitors, wireless smartphone integration and wireless handset charging. The e-tron Sportback is also online thanks to the Audi Connect module, bringing internet- derived features on board and upgrading Audi e-tron Sportback 54 Á 52-55.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:53 Page 254 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING navigation mapping with Google Earth. Moreover the third generation MIB 3 modular infotainment platform’s enhanced processing capability enables the MMI Navigation system to access speech recognition software in the cloud for more accurate feedback, and places everything from phone book contacts to climate control settings under vocal control. When considering storage, with seats up, a total of 615 litres of luggage space is available if the 60-litre stowage compartment under the bonnet is utilised. Volkswagen ID.4 Volkswagen’s first fully electric SUV, the ID.4, is approaching its launch. A compact electric drive results in a spacious vehicle interior, and tech is the focus up front. Two touchscreen displays are included, one for the infotainment centre, the other acting as an unlinked “floating” dash panel, and an intuitive lighting strip can be found below the windscreen, signalling to drivers when for instance the car has been locked, the vehicle’s drive system is active, or signalling phone calls and braking prompts and recommending lane changes. The ID.4 also holds voice recognition, and background lighting can be adjusted within a thirty-colour spectrum. The car comes as the second EV based on the MEB platform for efficient and cost- effective electric vehicles, after the ID.3, and is part of Volkswagen’s plan to invest €11 billion in electric mobility by 2024. The ID.4 further has a panoramic sunroof option, a 543 litre boot, is to offer seat covers made from vegan seat materials - a combination of leatherette and ArtVelours consisting of 20% recycled PET bottles - and seats with pneumatic lumbar supports with a built in massage function. The car is expected to come with a variety of battery options presenting a range of up to 311 miles and with a rapid charger, the vehicle can reach 80% capacity in thirty minutes. More information is soon to be released on the vehicle, which has been developed with a focus on aerodynamic efficiency and a minimalist interior. The ID.4 will initially be launched with rear-wheel drive, while an electric all-wheel drive version will be added to the portfolio at a later date. BMW iX3 The first fully electric-powered BMW SUV, the BMW iX3 reaches 62mph in 6.8 seconds, holds a top speed of 112mph, and is rear-drive. Launching in the UK in 2021, the iX3 introduces BMW’s fifth generation eDrive technology, combining the latest electric motor, power electronics, charging technology and high-voltage battery. The electric motor, transmission and power electronics are now arranged together in a single housing. The brand also highlights that the electric motor works without use of magnets, meaning rare earth materials are not used in construction, and that the power density of the electric motor in the iX3 is 30% greater than existing fully electric vehicles within the BMW portfolio. In addition, the new drive system unit generates maximum output of 286 hp and peak torque of 295 lb-ft Volkswagen ID.4 52-55.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:53 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 55 COUNTY MOTORING which, unlike with many other electric motors, is sustained at high revs. A 74kWh battery, is more energy dense than BMW’s previous cars, and comprises 188 prismatic cells. The efficient vehicle holds a range of up to 285 miles, beating the Audi e-tron, but falling behind the Volkswagen ID.4. Looking to recharge? When plugged into a direct current rapid- charging station, the iX3’s high-voltage battery can be charged from 0 to 80% of its full capacity in thirty-four minutes. Helping conserve and store energy, like with many current electric cars, lifting off the accelerator sees the brake energy regeneration system slow the vehicle for you. How strong this feels can be adjusted. A smart system can also adapt brake energy regeneration to road situations, utilising sat nav data and the driver assistance system. Also worth noting is the low centre of gravity helping prevent leaning in bends, while rear wheel drive, adaptive suspension, and electronically controlled dampers allow you to adjust how the car feels to drive. In terms of visuals the car is similar to the original X3, though the front apron and kidney grill are largely enclosed, and slight design changes at the rear and new alloy wheels have been sculpted to bolster aerodynamics. Furthermore, blue accents can be seen on the exterior and interior, alluding to the presence of its electric drive system, and boot capacity sits at 510 litres with seats up. The BMW iX3 comes equipped with the latest generation BMW Operating System 7, which allows for every line of software code in the car to be updated over the air. The standard-fit BMW Live Cockpit Professional offers a fully-digital screen grouping, and with the enhanced intuitive multimodal interaction the driver can take their pick of control interface for the situation: Control Display touchscreen, iDrive Controller, multifunction buttons on the steering wheel, voice control or BMW gesture control. Meanwhile the newest BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant boosts the connection between driver and car, activated by a prompt or button. The system helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with favoured settings. The car also hosts optimised smartphone integration. Finally, one must mention the intriguing fact that Hans Zimmer created the sound made by the car when pressing start or stop. Our personal rule is that the earliest it is allowable is November, but whatever the case, October is the start of the colder months and one of the toughest times for the elderly population and COVID is only set to make what has already been a tough year even worse. When it comes to the winter months and Christmas in particular, we’ve heard year after year about older people left uninvited to visit the family or have anything to do on Christmas day, so how will people left socially distanced already deal with the possibility of harsher social distancing rules? And what can be done about it? There’s no easy answer sadly. Cases of coronavirus are, at the time of writing, doubling every seven days, raising the prospect of a return to the level of infection seen in early March that led to the first lockdown. This is in part due to the virus doing better in colder weather, but also that people are losing vigilance when it comes to social distancing, flaunting rules or assuming it’s all okay because they didn’t get bitten the first time. As a result, the Government may have to lay down harsher measures, and with the older population already being considered high risk, it’s more than possible they’ll be told to lockup and avoid any gatherings. This may well be catastrophic for those people. In the last few years thanks in no small part to John Lewis adverts pointing it out, elderly people are more commonly left alone and uninvited to family Christmas dinners, forced to endure incredible loneliness. This can be even worse for those whose partners have passed away, leaving them alone. Thanks to the work of charities, volunteers and caring people across our region, many events were hosted to accommodate these people and give them a little Christmas cheer, whether it be in hosting events to bring them together or inviting someone into your home to spend time with you. All of that may well be impossible this year, since it won’t be safe to either side to bring someone into your home, and large gatherings hosted by charities may be told they cannot run. Already, Age UK, one of the leading charities working with the elderly, have been forced to make the decision to suspend home visits and group activities. What can be done to help our loved ones during Christmas, then? Well the first thing will be to keep an eye on the Government rules as anything can change between now and Christmas, so keep an eye to what is and isn’t allowed. As December approaches the Government will likely make specific mention of older people and what will be allowed with regards to them. Until then, it’s always a good idea to check up on your family however you can – if not in person then via Skype, Zoom or video call – and make sure they’re protected Winter is always a difficult time for the elderly and the recent pandemic may only make things worse Lonely winters 60 Á © Shutterstock /Rawpixel.com 59-61.qxp_Layout 1 28/09/2020 16:58 Page 1Next >
