But, despite the majority of UK adults having received both doses of their vaccines, infection rates continue to rise and here I am… focussing on COVID in my editor’s notes for another month. Such is the infection spike that the government has been warned by scientists to make mask wearing compulsory once more (among a raft of other recommendations). It should come as no surprise that talk of another national lockdown has also been gaining steam. One can’t help but wonder how we’ll be celebrating Christmas this year. Speaking of Christmas, it’s really only a stone’s throw away. That’s why we’re already celebrating our favourite pantos, and our market towns feature will provide plenty of inspiration as to where to go pressie shopping. In the meantime, it is October, arguably the most evocative month of the year. The leaves are turning, the nights are drawing in, and there’s a freshness on the air. This issue, autumn infuses almost every part of the magazine – from food and fitness to fashion. But October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so be sure to read our feature on this all-too important subject. That’s barely scraping the surface, so you’ll just have to read on to discover the rest for yourself. Local RAF veteran, Vic Rice, 79, from Fulbeck near Grantham, has been a volunteer for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity for 13 years, after a 35-year career with the RAF. Originally joining up as an apprentice, he retired as a Squadron Leader Engineer, seeing service in Kenya, Malaysia and Belize, as well as various bases in UK. Since then, he has made an enormous contribution to the work of SSAFA in Lincolnshire to support service personnel and their families. Having started with SSAFA Lincolnshire as a volunteer caseworker in 2007, Vic took over the reins as Branch Secretary in 2011. He leads on the day-to-day administration of the Branch, taking calls from clients, handling referrals for support and allocating cases to colleagues. He also acts as first point of contact for new volunteers, helping them with the application process and keeping in close touch with them. Vic has been more than willing to run the Branch office from home during the pandemic, ensuring that the volunteers and SSAFA’s clients have been fully supported during a difficult period. He has also planned, supervised and orchestrated two Branch office moves and a third move is now underway. “This is a great honour and I’m delighted to receive the award. After my long RAF service, I wanted to give something back,” he said. “I greatly enjoy dealing with veterans and their families – particularly the banter and sense of humour which is their watchword.” The Wellness Hub within Grimsby’s Health & Wellbeing Centre has opened after a £180,000 investment, providing a warm welcome to members with three unique zones for exercise, rehabilitation, relaxation and mental wellbeing. Home to 22 power assisted toning machines – understood to be the largest facility of its kind in the country – the Wellness Hub is an inclusive facility on the ground floor, safe for all age groups and abilities. Sue Wells, Lincs Inspire Chief Executive, said: “The arrival of this new Wellness Hub couldn’t have come at a better time as we play a vital role in supporting people who are easing back into exercise following the pandemic, not to mention assisting those living with the effects of long COVID. “Our investment in this community facility contributes significantly to our charitable aims and we are incredibly grateful to Sport England and North East Lincolnshire Council who have also provided important funding and trusted in our vision.” Vic Rice shows off Gildea certificate 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 21/09/2021 09:25 Page 1Harlaxton and Stubton take top spots in Best Kept Village competition Harlaxton and Stubton have taken top honours in this year’s South Kesteven District Council Best Kept Village competition. Thurlby was judged second in the medium village award, with Fulbeck third. Swinstead took second place in the small village category with Welby third. Winning villages will receive cheques in appreciation of residents’ work and community spirit, with £400 for the top award, £300 for second and £200 for third, paid to the Parish Council responsible for the village. The top two villages will also receive a gold litter bin and certificates in October. Cllr Dr Peter Moseley, Cabinet Member for Commercial and Operations, said: “We are extremely lucky to have such beautiful villages across the district and we are delighted to once again recognise the community pride and residents’ work that keeps them looking so special. “Our judging not only lets us reward that community pride but allows us to monitor areas which need attention from our council teams.” A new Lincoln Community Larder food bank service has been set up to help those in Wragby and surrounding villages who are in need of food and supplies. The Wragby food bank service is run by a group of volunteers from the community and Eric Sergeant, who helps to co-ordinate it, explains why it was launched. “It started as a church initiative where people donated and collected what they wanted from the church and now the building is open again this continues. However, as demand rose a more formal approach was needed and we launched the Wragby outreach earlier this summer,” says Eric. He adds: “We operate within a five mile radius of Wragby and both collections and deliveries take place each Tuesday.” The Lincoln Community Larder is an independent registered charity, run entirely by volunteers, and has been helping local people in crisis for over 30 years. Lincoln Community Larder opens in Wragby Grant funding sees new monument created to celebrate Kirton in Lindsey A £10,000 community grant has helped create a monument near to the centre of Kirton in Lindsey, celebrating the town’s agricultural heritage and its long history. The monument was designed and created by Tony Bartlett, a local resident who lives near to the monument located at Traingate within Kirton in Lindsey. The installation features a restored potato plough recovered from local storage and a sculpture of a farmer mounted onto a brick plinth. A plaque says ‘Chirchetone’, an ancient name for the town. Other plaques explain the parts of the plough and the meaning of the monument, which is designed to represent all the people who have worked the land around Kirton in Lindsey, including through times of war, and kept the spirit of the town going. The sculpture of the farmer was created by Harpswell-based artist James Sutton. 06-09.qxp_Layout 1 21/09/2021 09:25 Page 2Fresh investment backs further port development to create hundreds of jobs Hundreds of jobs are to be created and protected across the region after the latest major Government-backed industrial investment in the green energy sector. More than £260 million government and private sector investment has been announced to develop the next generation of wind turbines. GRI Renewable Industries is the second confirmed company to build facilities at Able Marine Energy Park near North Killingholme on the Humber bank with £78m being invested in an offshore wind turbine tower factory, creating up to 260 direct jobs. It comes after, last month, it was announced Korean SeAH Wind also received grant funding towards a new £117 million manufacturing facility for offshore wind turbine monopile foundations at the same site. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council and chair of the Humber Leader’s Board, said: “This latest Government backing for the world-leading offshore wind manufacturing industry is further evidence of the confidence in the sector and the region. “I am looking forward to welcoming GRI here. They are a global company with 16 factories around the world and I am delighted they have chosen North Lincolnshire for their new UK base. “This latest development will create even more, well-paid sustainable jobs – helping to create a more prosperous future. This is further evidence of the critical part that this area – including across the Humber and through Greater Lincolnshire – will play in the UK’s recovery and renewal.” As well as the new development at the Able site, Siemens Gamesa will invest £186 million to expand its blade manufacturing site on the north bank of the Humber, creating and safeguarding up to 1,080 direct jobs. As a result of the investment, the company will be able to manufacture the next generation of offshore wind turbines and blades greater than 100 meters. latest news © Shutterstock/Jordi C International Bomber Command Centre Wins 2021 Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for second year The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) has been recognised as a 2021 Travellers’ Choice award winner for attractions.
