As local councils, businesses and people reacted and offered their condolences, announcements came out that King Charles III was to take to the throne, and the transition, for many, felt all too quick. It’s difficult to explain what part Queen Elizabeth II played in the lives of people in Lincolnshire. London is so far away, and it’s often the case that Governmental figures feel alienated, distant and uncaring. The Queen was different: a refined stateswoman, a diplomat and a professional admired and respected all across the world. In an era where the internet has made all too clear the abuses and exploitation committed by those in power across the world, including with Prince Andrew, it was a constant source of pride that Queen Elizabeth remained above such things. Ever professional and ever graceful, she remained as proof that while power often corrupts, it does not always. As people clamour to say we will not see her like again, I find myself wondering if it is that we refer to. Too often do those in any form of power seek to enrich themselves at the loss of others - politicians, business owners, celebrities and more. King Charles will be judged harshly by the people, and perhaps unfairly, for Queen Elizabeth ruled for 70 years and he will not have the chance. In his much shorter tenure, he will have impossible shoes to fill and a world-renowned legacy to live up to. It might be strange to feel sorry for someone in his position, and perhaps it is unneeded, and yet it’s hard to imagine a world in which he – or anyone – can surpass Queen Elizabeth’s legacy. Rest in peace. Ben Burgess will formally acquire the Doubleday Group with all employees and existing Doubleday depots across Lincolnshire & Norfolk operating as part of the Ben Burgess group. Founded in the early 1970s by John Doubleday the business has remained family owned, successfully growing for over 50 years and becoming a core part of the agricultural community. In 1982, the business became a main dealer for John Deere – as Deere was first growing its UK presence. JW Doubleday operates from locations in Swineshead; Holbeach, Kings Lynn and Old Leake. The company employs 54 staff. Ian Doubleday-Collishaw, grandson of the founder, said: “This decision has not been taken lightly but we the Doubleday family, were determined to protect the future of our loyal team and the longevity of a reputable John Deere dealer across our trading area. We believe this is the correct decision for everyone involved.” Lincolnshire County Council has led a successful bid for almost £1m of funding aimed at getting more electric vehicle chargers into areas with limited off-street parking. A partnership of five local authorities across the Midlands region – Lincolnshire County Council, Herefordshire Council, Leicestershire County Council, Rutland County Council, and Stoke-on-Trent City Council – alongside Sub-National Transport Body Midlands Connect submitted the bid. The resulting award of £935,355 is to be distributed between the five councils. It is expected that this support from Government will now attract an additional £2.8m of private sector investment, with the cumulative funds being used to install a total of 322 standard and 27 rapid public EV chargers across the Midlands. In Lincolnshire, the funding will be used to deliver 101 standard and 8 rapid charging points across the county. The majority of these will be on-street chargers in residential areas with the remainder being placed in council-owned carparks and other council-owned land. Decades-old seafront pub in Cleethorpes sold Christie & Co has sold the Punch Bowl Inn, a well- known gastro pub-restaurant in Cleethorpes, for the first time in 34 years to Lancashire-based pub company, Trust Inns. The Punch Bowl Inn is a popular venue amongst locals and visitors of the North East Lincolnshire seaside town and has hosted many events and weddings over the years. The pub is located along the town’s North Promenade and features a 120- cover bar and restaurant, an entertainment area with a pool table and a large function room. The previous owners, Bernard and Sheila Stafford can now retire following the successful sale. They said: “After nearly three and a half decades, we felt the time was right to retire and allow for younger blood to invest further in the pub and begin a new chapter. “The Punchbowl has been a huge part of our lives and we’ve had many fantastic years here. We really enjoyed owning the business and would like to thank all our loyal customers for their support, especially throughout such a tough final period, with the COVID-19 pandemic.” © stock.adobe.com/ tongpatong © stock.adobe.com/DisobeyArt latest news Government cash won to boost electric vehicle charging points in Lincolnshire © stock.adobe.com/ sebra 06-11.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:32 Page 1Tree planting to be fast- tracked as council set to join Humber Forest partnership People across North Lincolnshire will see even more trees planted across the area as the council joins a pan-Humber organisation delivering the Government’s ambitious Northern Forest scheme. Already more than 90,000 trees have been planted towards the aim of 172,000 – one for every resident in the area. The council, communities, businesses and residents have backed the project launched two years ago with dozens of areas enhanced in communities across Ashby, Barton, Brigg, Scunthorpe and the Isle of Axholme. Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “We are committed to making North Lincolnshire a cleaner, even greener area for people to live, work and visit. “Now with access to additional Government cash through the Humber Forest, we can move these plans forward at an even faster pace. “People and businesses have really got behind the tree planting scheme and it is incredible to think that 90,000 more trees have been planted in the last two years since the very first one on the Queensway with Scunthorpe’s MP Holly Mumby-Croft.” Bransby Horses’ Sponsorship Star and visitor favourite, Honour, has found her perfect match and is now living in a loving foster home. Although she was not on the rehoming scheme, an application fitted Honour so well it couldn’t be ignored. Honour’s size, lack of early handling and medical needs meant she was very likely to be in sanctuary care her entire life. However, when an applicant ticked many of her boxes, the team felt there was a good chance Honour’s ‘perfect partner’ had been found. Rehoming manager, Rosanna Elliott Hart, said: “We are just over the moon Honour has found her perfect match. When someone applies to foster a horse from us there are lots of things to consider but the animal’s needs are our highest priority. In very rare circumstances this means there may be horses that are not on the rehoming section of our website, but could still be considered for foster life. This is what has happened in Honour’s case and we are confident she will continue to thrive out of the limelight and in a new herd.” Rescued Shire horse finds her happy ever after Plans submitted to create visitor destination and education centre within grounds of Harlaxton Manor Urban Edge Architecture has submitted a planning application to South Kesteven District Council on behalf of Harlaxton College for the restoration of the disused Walled Garden at the historic Harlaxton Manor, near Grantham, to create a stunning and sustainable visitor attraction and educational experience. As landscape architect and project lead, Urban Edge worked in close collaboration with Harlaxton College to create a masterplan for the 56.65ha site and a detailed landscape design focused around the historic Grade II* Listed Walled Garden, which will not only restore the historic fabric, but recreate the original productive function of the garden and introduce opportunities for education and participation. The proposals have been submitted following extensive engagement with stakeholders and with representatives of the community and officers of South Kesteven District Council, Historic England and Lincolnshire County Council. Andrew Cottage, head of Landscape Design at Urban Edge, said: “This is an exceptional project…On completion the public will have access to assets of heritage significance which have previously been inaccessible to visitors helping them to understand, appreciate and interpret the past.” 06-11.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:32 Page 2Companies and employees sentenced after 18-year-old worker’s death Two companies and two people have been sentenced after an 18-year-old construction worker was fatally injured while working on a house-build construction site in Boston, Lincolnshire. P & R Plant Hire (Lincolnshire) Limited, D. Brown (Building Contractors) Limited, Brent Woods and Darrell Tripp were all fined following the death of Josh Disdel. In July 2018 Mr Disdel, and another worker, both employed by P & R Plant Hire (Lincolnshire) Limited, had been tasked with clearing debris from manholes at a house-build construction site at White Bridges, Boston. While work was taking place, Mr Disdel’s colleague was asked if he could move the works van to allow another vehicle to pass. However, he was not aware that Mr Disdel was lying on the road with his head and torso in a manhole, directly in front of the van. As the vehicle moved forwards one of the wheels entered the top of the manhole contacting Mr Disdel. Mr Disdel was then taken to hospital but later died as a result of serious crush injuries. Football wish comes true for Ray at Neale Court Care Home Staff at Neale Court Care Home in North Hykeham arranged for 82-year- old Lincoln City fan Ray Inman to attend a league match against Fleetwood at home. The outing was arranged as part of Country Court’s Make a Wish initiative. Residents are given the opportunity to tell staff about somewhere they have always wanted to go or a special activity they always wanted to do. Ray’s passion for football started at a young age and he has lots of fond memories of watching Lincoln City. He would regularly go to his Grandparent’s house, and they would all watch the game together or listen in on the radio. He would often shout “COME ON RED IMPS!” “Ray loves his football and is a huge Lincoln City fan,” said wellbeing coordinator Becky Bourke. “He loves reminiscing and telling us all about when Bill Anderson was the Manager and Andy Graver all-time best goal scorer. His day was made very special as his daughter Karen and his son-in-law Matthew and grandchildren Jack, Lewis and Amelia joined him to watch the match.” Green Light for Campus for Future Living at Mablethorpe Councillors have approved planning consent for the Campus for Future Living, which is set to put Mablethorpe at the forefront of medical technology and innovation. The Campus, which will also be a centre for health and care related teaching and research, will see the construction of a faculty building housing laboratories, consultation spaces, lecture facilities, and ancillary facilities. The Campus, which is benefitting from £8.5m in Town Deal funding through Connected Coast Town Deal, will also offer accommodation and a café, as well as parking facilities. Led by a coalition of local, regional, and national partners, the Campus for Future Living will put Mablethorpe at the heart of the provision of health and care related jobs and businesses. As well as providing a base for the development and testing of medi-tech applications, it will also enable the continued professional development of clinicians, and will provide support and training for people working in care. latest news © stock.adobe.com/ LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS 06-11.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:32 Page 3Council reaffirms commitment to explore investment opportunities at RAF Scampton Following a closure parade at RAF Scampton to celebrate the rich history of the base, West Lindsey District Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the community.
