Autumn conjures up luxurious thoughts of crisp, leaf-strewn walks amidst deep, earthy colours such as rust, olive, mustard, and caramel. These provide rich pickings for eyeshadow, blush and even lipstick shades. As the weather gets cooler, changing to a cosier hair colour with more intricate hairstyles helps to get us in the seasonal spirit. An often overlooked season, Autumn is having it’s time in the spotlight this year, as the slew of pumpkin spiced merchandise on offer can attest to. So, if you’re feeling the sweater weather vibes this season, read on to discover how you can reflect this in your style. We tend to indulge in decadent treats such as hot chocolates and roast chestnuts around this time of year – which is perfectly reflected in this season’s choice of hair colour. If you’re looking to switch up from beachy blonde, this could be the sign you need. However, if you’re eyeing up that pillar box red hair dye, you might want to think again. Colours such as bright red are certainly striking but have the potential to look flat if your hair isn’t glossy. To give these deeper hues a modern twist, stylists are incorporating several shades into one, such as warm blonde, brunette and caramel. Combined, this creates a multidimensional intrigue, often coined “bronde” (think Beyonce). This can also be done with red shades (which all the pros agree will be the hottest colour this season). A combination of cinnamon browns, rich auburns, orange reds and strawberry blondes will give a shimmering, ethereal look. Bolder reds are also on-trend, combined with cherry chocolate browns for a more fearless effect. This would look fantastic when combined with a choppy bob. For natural blondes, there is a shift away from the ‘light as possible’ trend, which has seen natural pigment shifts in the hair being highlighted out to give a uniformly bleached appearance. In the theme of dimension, allowing these natural tones to appear is actually on trend. If you want to give your hair an uplift, stylists recommend using copper and brunette shades as lowlights throughout the hair to create depth and contrast. Lowlights are low maintenance and low commitment, as they are a subtle and gradual change whilst still giving your look a boost. As these shades can fade more quickly, ask your stylist for a top-up gloss to increase the intensity from home. If this isn’t possible, returning to the salon for a top up treatment will prolong the life of your colour. When experimenting with darker hair colours, it’s always important to be mindful of your skin tone. Paler skin tones will look washed out by bright reds and dark browns, so if this is you, opt for lighter and more natural shades such as strawberry blonde, copper and red sand. Medium skin tones look amazing when paired with deep auburn shades, and truly suit a popping cherry red. For deeper skin tones, chestnuts and blue or purple reds pack a punch. Moving on to beauty, it’s very likely that your skin is in need of a little rehab. The extreme heat of this year’s summer, even if you remained in the UK throughout, will have taken some toll on your skin. Areas most vulnerable to the sun are the face and neck, with tell-tale shades Autumn Autumn is an oft-overlooked season, but natural colours and vibrant hues mesh well with hair, and the colder nights make proper skincare essential. 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:41 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 37 © stock.adobe.com/Shopping King Louie signs of UV exposure being increased pigmentation, freckling and sunspots. Whilst these are not dangerous, they can be of cosmetic concern. Vitamin C chemical peels are available over the counter and can counteract pigmentation and unevenness. As these can be harsh to the skin, it’s best to start off using once a week for at least 3 weeks before increasing application if required. Results should be visible around 6-8 weeks. If you’re looking for faster or stronger results, dermatologists can administer stronger peels, or laser therapies. Prices start around £200 for a small area. Prevention is better than cure, so you could incorporate a vitamin C serum into your morning routine to dissipate UV Rays. As recommended by every skin care expert, sunscreen should be seen as a non-negotiable, all year round. With your skin restored to full glory, you can start experimenting with makeup again. After two years of face masks, many are excited to experiment with full glam once again. The 2022 approach is set to be accentuating one feature, such as eyes or lips, with bold colours, with a backdrop of healthy and radiant skin. Use cream products such as blush (or even a satin lipstick) which will blend seamlessly with your foundation and add to the dewy appearance. You can experiment with blush by strobing – applying a high intensity colour (such as terracotta, mauve or crimson) underneath foundation, then blending foundation over the top for a seamless but striking look. Gradient lips are the perfect way to step up your makeup game. Line your lips with a deep red, use a berry tone for the outer edges and a bright red in the centre. Then gently blend where they meet for a hypnotic effect. Textures create contrast as well as colour, so use matte lipsticks to contrast the radiant base, or use lip gloss if you prefer using powder complexion products. The last quarter of the year is a perfect time to experiment with makeup, but it doesn’t have to be cakey. That dewy look works all year around, creating a beautifully natural looking base. This gives the ability to go bolder with colour, without it looking too heavy. Lightly applied, deep colours such as crimson and mauve are the way forward. Deep colours apply to hair too, with lowlights being the perfect low-maintenance switch up. Remember the golden rule – the paler you are, the less deep you’ll be able to go. Starting subtle and working your way up should increase your confidence to go for darker, more dramatic looks – it is Halloween season after all! 36-37.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:42 Page 238 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HEALTH & FITNESS © stock.adobe.com/Kzenon How to get out of your fitness slump Warm summer days made exercising easy, but more people slump before Christmas than after. Let’s explore some interesting trends within the fitness world to reignite that urge to stay healthy. If you hate cardio, you’re in luck as weight training has seen an upsurge in popularity this year. As we will explore, weight training can be an easy way to spice up an existing routine. We will also discover some fun fitness gadgets to pique your interest, which also aid your ability to work out from home (which is great news if you’re feeling the financial pinch!). The first trend is the gamification of the fitness industry. Over recent years, fitness, music, and entertainment has combined in such trends as Zumba, pole fitness and Street Beat – to huge success. With the ever-rising popularity of Tik Tok, people are exposed to a broader range of ways to approach hobbies. Research suggests that 86% of Gen Z have broadened their passions since the pandemic due to apps like this documenting innovative and entertaining ways to do things. In other words, the fitness industry has discovered that giving fitness an entertainment value increases consumer retention. This is exemplified in platforms such as Zwift – a virtual cycling platform that simulates routes and responds to a person’s real time movements on an indoor bike. Another example is THE TRIP workout from mass- scale fitness brand Les Mills. Conducted in huge venues such as arenas, THE TRIP is a 40-minute cycling workout with a journey through digitally created worlds projected on screens, accompanied by a surround sound experience. This level of gamification has proven massively popular, as research suggests that having fun whilst working out increases membership retention. The increased motivation can even boost the number of calories burnt. Working out in a group session is also a trend which is taking hold. Companies such as Les Mills are increasing the number of group sessions available. Adding a social element gives people more of a reason to attend and provides motivation to stay the course. The app Zwift also allows users to enter competitions against other users, and friends can set up their own races to compete against each other. This has also been seen with Boot Camps. These are military inspired training, led by an instructor or “sergeant” known for taking a no-nonsense approach. The emphasis is on discipline, encouraging good fitness habits as well as ensuring you don’t quit. These military inspired workouts train the whole body, ensuring results. Many local gyms offer Boot Camps if they have outdoor space. These sessions often use medicine balls, dumbbells, bars, and discs for weight training, as well as practicing cardio through obstacle courses and mud runs. Everyone commits to the theatre of the military style, which adds an element of fun, as well as providing an opportunity for socialisation. Adding to the entertainment theme is the increased reliance on wearable technology to monitor fitness progress. Alongside obtaining information such as heart rate, speed, and distance, which improves athletes’ progress, these gadgets can now play music and videos to keep you entertained. Generally, these are watches or anklets. Whilst the accuracy of fitness trackers is disputed, they are considered good enough for general fitness purposes. Regardless, research shows that they can significantly improve fitness journeys as the access to level information increases motivation for weight loss and understanding of nutritional intake. Due to this, wearable technology has even been seen to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol in those with Type 2 diabetes. In 2022, a significant rise has been seen in weight training, specifically with free weights and bodyweight training. Free weights include dumbbells, bars, and medicine balls. This is in no small part due to their portability. With repeated lockdowns, and many still regularly working from home, investing in free weights is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to incorporate fitness into a home setting. Furthermore, free weights provide the opportunity to incorporate into cardio workouts such as running or cycling, to increase heart rate and calories burnt. An added benefit is that free weights tend to work more muscles than machine weights, as other areas of your body must be engaged to support and stabilise. It can be beneficial to start on a machine if you’re a beginner however, as it encourages correct posture. Body weight training entails utilising the whole body and the force of gravity as weights. This includes routines such as yoga and pilates, which adopt stretches, prolonged poses, and controlled movements as resistance to your own gravitational pull. This can be less impactful on joints, so a great way to begin a weight loss journey. Without weights to provide balance, it can be more difficult to adopt the correct posture. Experts recommend starting out with wall push-ups or squats, or modified push ups with knees on the ground. This allows you to identify and get comfortable with correct stances. To begin, you can try one exercise for 12 to 15 repetitions. When this is comfortable, you can try alternative versions to increase the challenge. Strength training for all muscle groups should be undertaken twice a week. This can be easily slotted into an existing cardio routine by using it as a break between more intense activities. If you’re concerned about the cost of living during the colder months, your fitness regime should not add to your stress. We have explored some easy and cost -effective ways you can switch up your routine if you’re feeling uninspired. Bodyweight training has the dual benefit of being low effort to set up, and low joint impact, whilst giving your entire body attention, perfect for dreary days where a strenuous workout feels too much. To combat impending SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) get yourself on some fun apps such as Zwift, which have a social element too to lift your spirits and tap into your competitive edge. 38-39.qxp_Layout 1 20/09/2022 09:43 Page 2Next >
