However, this is not always what is best for them. W hen we age, our bodies start slowing down, it becomes harder to maintain muscle mass, and health conditions can prevent us from being as active as we once were, which is understandable. But moving too little can make things worse long-term, allow health conditions to creep in, and even make people more prone to slips and falls. Supporting our elderly friends and relatives to keep active, no matter their age, is vital to aging in good health, can help reduce the risk of many conditions, and by building fitness, strength and balance, older folks can hold onto their independence for longer. Regular movement comes with a raft of benefits, being connected to maintaining a sharp mind, cutting dementia risk, and keeping the heart strong to lower chance of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. It also reduces risk of type 2 diabetes, arthritis and some cancers, strengthens bones, keeps joints supple and muscles working, and helps improve mobility and balance — thus reducing falls, all while boosting mental health too. The NHS recommends that older adults do some type of physical activity every day, even if it’s just light activity like getting up to make a cup of tea, vacuuming, or making the bed. Focusing on things that improve strength, balance Keeping active as we get older 62 Á © stock.adobe.com/LIGHTFIELD STUDIOS62 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY and flexibility on at least two days a week is encouraged, and doing at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, such as dancing, hiking, or pushing a lawn mower. Helping people engage in just a small amount of physical activity can make a huge difference, and it doesn’t need to feel challenging or like a chore. New activewear, gym memberships and high- intensity classes are unessential — often minimal changes are all that’s needed. The main aim for our elders should be consistency. No specific forms of exercise are required as people age, however activities that engage the cardiovascular system are recommended, from gardening to walking, swimming to yoga. If the person being supported is very inactive, there are a number of things that you can encourage them to do. Here it is crucial to start slowly and progress gradually. For those who often find themselves sitting throughout the day, urge them to stand and stretch once every hour, or where that isn’t possible, suggest they move their arms or legs, perhaps setting a timer as a reminder. Doing gentle stretches, whether in bed or on a chair, every day should also be promoted. Try setting goals to achieve, like working towards standing without using a walker, or walking between points in a room, and timing it, to try and beat that time each day. For those who are more mobile, encouraging them to switch up their daily activities can be a great way to integrate more exercise into their lives wherever the opportunity arises. This could be walking to a local shop instead of driving and carrying shopping bags for weight training, using stairs instead of escalators, doing push ups against the wall while waiting for the kettle to boil, or doing some work in the garden. Meanwhile, for those able, there are myriad opportunities to try a class in Lincolnshire, including those held specifically for older adults. Offer to take them to a regular dance class, aqua aerobics, walking football, or seated exercise classes that provide a full body workout from a chair to help people get active in an achievable, safe and fun way. As a bonus, if the class is something enjoyable, it will make the activity easier to stick with long-term. Classes also bring an important social aspect with them, creating a chance to meet new people, and step away from feelings of isolation and loneliness. The sense of camaraderie that comes with exercising with others can make us feel happier and more relaxed, relieve stress and improve mood, supporting our wellness as we age. Trying new activities is also great for keeping minds sharp, with the brain engaged. If loved ones have health conditions that make being active challenging, it doesn’t mean they can’t get moving more. Speaking to healthcare professionals and class instructors will help in gaining an understanding of their abilities and finding the best ways for them to exercise safely, and inform of how to modify activities. Take time to discuss options with loved ones and find what will work best for them, considering where and when they can get active, any symptoms of a condition, concerns, and medical advice given. For some, the thought of exercise can instil fear; LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 63 CARING Eccleshare Court Care & Nursing Home Eccleshare Court Care & Nursing Home provides the highest standards of family- led nursing, residential and specialist dementia care. As our older friends take on a more active lifestyle, we can also take steps to help maintain their motivation. Ensure to acknowledge and celebrate their efforts and progress, no matter how small, and remind them of the positive outcomes of physical activity. Creating a daily exercise routine can help too, to ensure consistency, making it a natural part of the day, working with elderly relatives to find a time that suits their preferences. Regular exercise is key to maintaining good health and wellbeing as we age. It’s never too late to start moving more and a little encouragement, understanding, and support can go a long way in giving our elderly relatives the confidence and resources to increase their physical activity, and enjoy it too. © stock.adobe.com/N F/peopleimages.com64 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY SUDOKU competition Closing date for entries is: 20th OCTOBER 2025 To enter just email the numbers that appear in the purple squares to: competitions@blmgroup.co.uk Win a £20 voucher to spend with any of our advertisers in this issue. The five photographs taken between 1917 and 1920, by cousins Elsie Wright and Frances Griffiths in our neighbouring county of Yorkshire, are renowned for fooling many, including Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who was so convinced of the authenticity of the images of real life fairies that he published them in a national magazine. The girls later admitted to using paper cut-outs fixed with hat pins for their scenes, which amazed society at the time. While today we may consider our predecessors foolish for believing in the photos, in modern day we are facing just as much trouble deciphering what is real and fake when it comes to images and video, with the best of AI making it impossible for many to know what is true. Taking on the spreadsheet champions A man from Scunthorpe is on the road to Las Vegas to represent the UK at the world spreadsheet championship. Having won the British title in London, after numerous qualifying competitions, Ha Dang is ready to take on global rivals at the Microsoft Excel World Championship. Impressively, Dang only heard about the competition after watching a contest at a conference earlier this year, as he told the BBC. He shared how he thought he would be capable of success in the esport too, watching instructional videos on YouTube to train. The competition requires participants to solve unusual game tasks in Microsoft Excel, tapping into logical thinking skills. It transforms a common office tool into a dynamic sport, celebrating the power of spreadsheets. watercooler 66 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.net Have we missed anything?
