They’ll bebringing their hysteria to Lincoln’sEngine Shed on Sunday 9th Decemberand we dared to speak to JoanneCatherall and got her to open herheart. What have been the biggest changesin making music since you began?Obviously there’s a lot moretechnology. We recorded our lastalbum in two studios, and it made itmuch easier because you couldbasically do two things to once. Butnow with eBay we’ve been able to buyagain some of the technology we usedto have. One of Philip’s favouritethings is to fiddle around with oldsynthesisers so on our albums now weuse lots of our old kit but record withnew technology.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY103WHAT’S ONDo you still enjoy playing the oldsongs?I know a lot of bands, when they’vebeen going as long as us, think theyneed to do their old songs in adifferent way, but I don’t think that’swhat our audience want – they likehearing them as they remember thembecause they bring back memories. Welove playing live and the biggestproblem we have is picking what weplay – though there are some thingslike Don’t You Want Me that you cannever leave out!Who makes up the typical HumanLeague audience? It’s a real mix. We have people thesame age as us and they bring alongtheir kids who have grown uplistening to the music. We did anelectronic festival in Berlin where theaudience was almost all teenagers andthat was fantastic. And so many of today’s acts seem tobe influenced by you...It’s a bit odd because it makes mefeel a bit like a grandma! I thinkbecause we were a mix of electronicand pop, and a mix of male andfemale, that made the people whocame after us realise pop could beacceptable, it didn’t have to bemanufactured, just like we wereinspired by ABBA before us.How has the band managed to staytogether for so long?I think one of the things is thatSusan and I have never beensongwriters. While we’ve had peoplecome and go, all the arguments havebeen about writing. You’re still based in Sheffield – whatis it about the city that’s created somuch pop music?Sheffield is a down to earth city butit’s also got a big university cultureand a big arts scene. There are a lot ofquite wealthy people here but I don’tthink they like spending their moneyvery much! So you’ve got that artyundercurrent. The sound ofTHE CROWDTell me when! The youngsters, aged between 7 and 17,experienced seven different activities on the day- fly fishing, clay shooting, gun dogs, hawking, ferreting, target air rifle shooting and archery. Dave Carter, Managing Director at Lincolnshire Active Community Network, whoorganised the day with the British Association of Shooting and Conservation says,“The Young Shots Day in Lincolnshire was organised to provide opportunities foryoung people to take part in sport and try disciplines of shooting they have perhapsnever tried before. The whole day went extremely well and all of the children hadsmiles on their faces. The success would not have been possible without the helpfrom the volunteers and Riseholme campus.” Two events for next year have already been organised - there’s an AdultCountryside Activities Day on 29th June and the third Young Person’s CountrysideDay on 21st September.
